P. LORENZO CROSARA
Il 12 dicembre 2016, a Franklin (USA), è morto il P. Lorenzo Crosara.
Aveva 83 anni compiuti. Era nato a Priabona di Monte di Malo il 31 maggio 1933.
La storia della vocazione di P. Lorenzo ebbe inizio nella scuola parrocchiale di Priabona durante una lezione di geografia. L’insegnante presentando il continente africano parlò dei missionari “della loro vita, dei sacrifici e delle avventure e infine suggerì di abbonarsi a qualche rivista missionaria. Io mi abbonai al ‘Piccolo Missionario’. Lo leggevo sempre, dalla prima parola all’ultima … e alla fine dell’anno tra tante incertezze, da solo, decisi di farmi missionario” (Esame della vocazione 1950). Per il suo parroco quella decisione fu come un fulmine a ciel sereno: “Avevo coltivato con cura il giovanetto, fedele e generoso collaboratore. Desideravo vederlo in Seminario” (Presentazione al Rettore della casa di Vicenza).
Il 3.9.1946 entrò tra i Saveriani a Vicenza. Dopo alcuni giorni raggiunse Grumone per frequentare la terza media. Purtroppo la scuola parrocchiale di Priabona era stata un generoso palliativo di attività scolastica in una zona dove, in quegli anni della seconda guerra mondiale, non mancarono scontri armati, imboscate e uccisioni tra partigiani, repubblichini e truppe tedesche.
Ripeté l’anno scolastico a Vicenza. Frequentò quindi la quarta ginnasio a Grumone e la quinta a Zelarino. “Deciso di seguire la vocazione a tutti i costi” (Esame vocazione), nell’ottobre del 1950 entrò in Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli, presentato dal Rettore di Zelarino e accompagnato da una cordiale lettera di don Alessandro Baccega, il parroco che lo sognava in Seminario: “Avrei voluto averlo con me ancora tanto tempo per il bene che ha fatto e che mi ha aiutato a fare. Poche volte noi parroci abbiamo la fortuna di avere figli spirituali tanto convinti della vocazione e tanto compresi dei loro doveri” (1.8.1950).
Il 12.10.1951 emise la Prima Professione. Passò quindi a Desio nella comunità del Liceo. L’anno successivo, 1952, fu inviato con altri studenti negli Stati Uniti. Studiò l’inglese, frequentò il Biennio filosofico e tre anni di Teologia a Holliston. Concluse gli studi teologici a Franklin dove il 22.03.1958 fu ordinato Presbitero e dove rimase altri due anni per conseguire il Master of arts alla Marquette University di Milwaukee.
Dal 1960 al 1966 lavorò a Holliston: Insegnante nel seminario saveriano (’62-’66) e Editore di Xaverian Missionaries Newsletter (’62-’66). Un lavoro gradito a P. Lorenzo. Ma la situazione economica della casa richiedeva un supplemento di attenzione, un servizio ‘esclusivo’, per risolvere i problemi. Si pensò a P. Lorenzo. “Non so - scriveva al P. Generale il 26.7.1965 – cosa farò nel nuovo ufficio: si tratta di assicurare un maggiore flusso di offerte per il seminario potenziando la nostra immagine pubblica […]. Farò del mio meglio, ma sono piuttosto sorpreso della fiducia che i Superiori hanno in me”.
L’operazione non andò in porto. Prevalsero le urgenze della missione e il confratello fu destinato alla Sierra Leone.
Fu Vice Parroco (’66-’68) e successivamente Direttore della scuola a Kabala (’68-’75).
Ridestinato agli USA, ricoprì diversi incarichi: Editore di Xaverian Missionaries Newsletter (’75-’82); Responsabile dello Shrine di Holliston (’84-’86); Animatore missionario (’86-’91); Rettore del Centro di Animazione (’93-’96).
Dal 1998 risiedeva a Franklin addetto al ministero.
I valori e le sfide di P. Lorenzo si possono intravedere nella lettera a P. Luigi Menegazzo, Vicario Generale, dell’11.6.05: “non sono sicuro di essermi meritato, nella sua ultima visita a Franklin, il suo grazie per essere stato cortese, simpatico e onesto nei suoi confronti … Senza dubbio l’ideale è grande e vi aspiro ogni giorno, anche quando mi pare di essere scorbutico. […].
Sia fatta la volontà di Dio, anche quando non mi piace. Ciao, Padre, e i miei ringraziamenti a tutta la DG. Ne ammiro il lavoro anche se qualche volta sono critico […]. Vi ricordo nella preghiera e in realtà vi ammiro”.

Fr. Lorenzo Crosara died on 12 December 2016, in Franklin (USA).
Born in Priabona di Monte di Malo, on 31 May 1933, he was 83 years old.
The story of Fr. Lorenzo’s vocation began in the parish school of Priabona during a geography lesson. The teacher was presenting a lesson on the African continent and mentioned the missionaries, describing “their life, sacrifices and adventures and suggested that the students subscribe to some missionary magazine. I took out a subscription to the Piccolo Missionario. I always read it from the first page to the last … and at the end of the year, amidst many uncertainties, I decided on my own that I would become a missionary” (Esame della vocazione, 1950). For his parish priest this decision was like a bolt from the blue: “I had nurtured the young lad with great care, he was a generous and faithful collaborator and I had hoped to see him join the Seminary” (Presentation to the Rector of the Vicenza house).
He joined the Xaverians in Vicenza on 3 September 1946. A few days later he went to Grumone to attend the third year of junior high school. Unfortunately, the parish school of Priabona had only been a generous stopgap measure of academic activity in an area where, during the years of the second world war, there had been armed clashes and ambushes and killings among the partisans, republicans and German troops.
He repeated the academic year in Vicenza. He then attended senior high school in Grumone and Zelarino. “Determined to follow my vocation no matter what” (Esame vocazione), in October 1950 he began Novitiate in S. Pietro in Vincoli, presented by the Rector of Zelarino and accompanied by a cordial letter of Fr. Alessandro Baccega, the parish priest who had wanted him to join the Seminary: “I would have liked to keep him with me for a long time for all the good he has done and for all the good he has helped me to do. Rarely do we parish priests have the good fortune to have spiritual sons who are so convinced of their vocation and devoted to their duties” (1.8.1950).
He made his First Profession on 12 October 1951 and moved to Desio where he studied at the Lyceum. The following year, in 1952, he was sent to the United States of America with other students. He studied English, attended the two-year Philosophy course and three years of Theology in Holliston. He finished the theology studies in Franklin and was ordained priest there on 22 March 1958. He remained in Franklin for another two years to obtain the Master of Arts at the Marquette University of Milwaukee.
From 1960 until 1966 he worked in Holliston: he taught in the Xaverian Seminary (1962-66) and was the Editor of the Xaverian Missionaries Newsletter (1962-66). He enjoyed the work, but the financial situation of the house called for extra attention, an ‘exclusive’ service, in order to solve its problems. The choice fell on Fr. Lorenzo, who wrote to the Superior General on 26 July 1965: “I don’t know what I will do: we have to achieve a greater influx of offerings for the seminary by promoting our public image […]. I will do my best, but I am rather surprised at the confidence that the Superiors have in me”.
The plan did no go ahead because the needs of the mission were more urgent and he was assigned to Sierra Leone, where he served as assistant priest (1966-68) and, later, as Director of the school in Kabala (1968-75).
He was reassigned to the USA, where he was Editor of the Xaverian Missionaries Newsletter (1975-82); the person in charge of the Holliston Shrine di Holliston (1984-86); missionary animator (1986-91); Rector of the Animation Center (1993-96).
From 1998 he resided in Franklin and worked in the pastoral ministry.
We can catch a glimpse of the values and the challenges of Fr. Lorenzo in the letter he wrote to the Vicar General, Fr. Luigi Menegazzo, on 11 June 2005: “I am not sure I deserve your words of thanks for being kind, pleasant and honest towards you during your last visit to Franklin … The ideal is undoubtedly great and I aspire to it every day, even when I have the impression that I am grumpy. […].
May God’s will be done, even when it is not to my liking. Please express my gratitude to the entire General Direction. I admire its work even though I sometimes criticize it […]. I remember you all in my prayers and I really do admire you”.
