1943 - 2023

Sabato 18 novembre 2023, alle ore 12.00 circa, è deceduto per emorragia celebrale presso l’Ospedale di Parma, il nostro confratello p. Raimondo Sommacal.  Aveva compiuto da poco più di un mese 80 anni, essendo nato il 14 ottobre 1943 a Mier-Mares, Belluno, Italia.

Finite le scuole elementari, nel 1955 il giovanissimo Raimondo entra nel Seminario diocesano di Feltre, Belluno dove frequenta l’anno pre-preparatorio, le Scuole Medie e la IV ginnasio.

Sentendo la Vocazione all’Apostolato Missionario (e con il giudizio positivo dei suoi superiori) il 1° ottobre 1960 il giovane Raimondo entra nella casa saveriana di Zelarino (Mestre, Venezia). Qui frequenta la IV e la V Ginnasio (1960-1962). In seguito, va a S. Pietro in Vincoli per vivere l’anno di noviziato.

Dopo la Prima Professione religiosa-missionaria (fatta il 03.10.1963 a Parma), il giovane Raimondo continua con il consueto iter scolastico-formativo: liceo a Tavernerio (1963-1966), propedeutica a Parma (1966-1967), prefettato ad Ancona (1967-1968), teologia a Parma (1968-1972). Qui emette la Professione Perpetua (12 settembre 1969) e riceve l’ordinazione Presbiterale il 26 settembre 1971.

Finiti gli studi teologici, p. Raimondo viene inviato come vicario cooperatore alla parrocchia del Tempio S. Cuore, Parma (1972-1979).

Dopo un anno di studio della lingua francese a Parigi (1979-1980), p. Raimondo parte per lo Zaire (attuale R.D.C.). Qui, dopo un periodo di lingua Swahili a Bukavu, esercita il suo ministero di viceparroco a Baraka (1983-1986). Dal 1983 al 1986 è Direttore Spirituale del Seminario Minore di Mungombe (Diocesi di Uvira). Dal 1986 al 1995 è rettore dello Scolasticato di Vamaro (Bukavu). In quegli stessi anni (1986-1990) ricopre anche l’incarico di Vice Superiore Regionale e nell’ultimo anno (1989-1990) assume il ruolo di Superiore Regionale.

Per tre anni (1990-1993) è membro della Direzione Regionale. In questo periodo partecipa al convegno internazionale sulla Formazione a Yaoundé (luglio 1990).

Dopo aver vissuto i Tre Mesi di Formazione Permanente a Tavernerio (1994), viene inviato per un anno a Bukavu-Cahi come viceparroco. Dal 1996 al 1997 è Maestro dei Novizi a Kinshasa – Kingabwa. L’anno seguente è a Shabunda come viceparroco (1997-1998) e per un anno è Direttore del Centro Catechistico di Kavimvira, Uvira. Dal 1999 al 2004 è parroco a Kasongo Ngene.

Dopo un anno sabbatico a Parigi (2004-2005) ed alcuni mesi a Parma, nel 2006 ritorna a Kavimvira come rettore della casa (2006-2008) e anche come Direttore del Centro Catechetico (2006-2011).

Nel 2011 p. Raimondo lascia definitivamente il Congo e viene destinato alla Casa Madre di Parma (*). Qui, oltre al ministero e alla direzione spirituale degli studenti di Teologia del Teologato Internazionale, da settembre 2012 segue la Pastorale tra i Migranti come Delegato Vescovile in collaborazione con la Commissione diocesana “Migrantes” di Parma. 

“Nella misura delle mie forze, poiché sono Sacerdote, voglio ormai essere il primo a rendermi conto di ciò che il mondo ama, persegue, soffre; il primo a cercare, a simpatizzare, a penare; il primo ad effondermi ed a sacrificarmi, nel modo più umano possibile”^[1] (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin).

“…ho sempre atteso il momento per dirti grazie per il ministero che mi avete affidato: “essere in mezzo alla gente”, anche se non mi sarei mai immaginato che fosse a servizio degli Immigranti. Ricordo con piacere il detto ‘a manioca fruttifica là dove viene gettata’…”. (da un breve scritto al Superiore Generale, p. Luigi Menegazzo, 15 dicembre 2011). 

Ricoverato in ospedale a causa di un deterioramento della sua salute, il 18 novembre 2023 p. Raimondo viene portato dagli angeli al cospetto dell’Altissimo per ricevere la ricompensa del servitore buono e fedele^[2].

1943 - 2023

On Saturday, November 18^th, 2023, around 12:00 a.m., our confrere Fr. Raimondo Sommacal died of cerebral haemorrhage at Parma Hospital. He had celebrated his 80^th birthday a little more than a month earlier, as he was born on October 14^th, 1943, in Mier-Mares, Belluno, Italy.

Upon completing primary school, in 1955, the very young Raimondo entered the Diocesan Seminary of Feltre, Belluno, to attend the preparatory year, Middle School and the IV year of Gymnasium (i.e. junior high school).

He felt a Call to Missionary Apostolate (and having received a positive evaluation from his superiors) on October 1^st, 1960, young Raimondo entered the Xaverian House of Zelarino (Mestre – Venice, Italy). There he attended the IV and V year of Gymnasium (1960-1962). Subsequently, he moved to San Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna, Italy) for the year of Novitiate.

After the first Religious-Missionary Profession (Parma, October 3^rd, 1963), young Raimondo underwent the then standard curriculum: Lyceum (senior high school) in Tavernerio (1963-1966), Propaedeutics in Parma (1966-1967), prefect of students in Ancona (1967-1968) and theological studies in Parma (1968-1972). There, he made his Perpetual Profession (September 12^th, 1968) and was ordained priest (September 26^th, 1971).

At the completion his theological studies, Fr. Raimondo was assigned as assistant vicar in the Temple of the Sacred Heart Parish, Parma (1972-1979).

After studying French for one year in Paris (1979-1980), Fr. Raimondo travelled to Zaïr (today’s D.R.C.). He spent a period of time studying the Swahili language in Bukavu, then ministered as assistant parish priest in Baraka (1983-1986).  From 1983 to 1986, he served as spiritual tutor of the Minor Seminary in Mungombe (Diocese of Uvira). From 1986 to 1995, he was rector of the community of professed students in Vamaro (Bukavu). In those same years (1986-1990) he fulfilled the role of vice regional superior and in the last year (1989-1990) he served that of regional superior.

He was member of the Regional Direction for three years (1990-1993). During this time, he took part in the international conference on Formation in Yaoundé (July 1990).

After the Three Months of on-going formation in Tavernerio (1994), he was assigned to work as assistant parish priest for one year in Bukavu-Cahi. From 1996 to 1997, he served as master of novices in Kinshasa – Kingabwa. The following year, he was in Shabunda as assistant parish priest (1997-1998) and for one year he worked as director of the Catechetical Centre of Kavimvira, Uvira. From 1999 to 2004, he was parish priest in Kasongo Ngene.

He took a sabbatical in Paris (2004-2005) and for some months also in Parma, then, in 2006, he returned to Kavimvira as rector of the house (2006-2008) and director of the Catechetical Centre (2006-2011).

In 2011, Fr. Raimondo left Congo for good and was assigned to the Mother House in Parma (*). There, in addition to ministry and the spiritual direction of the theology students of the International Theologate, from 2012 became also involved in Ministry with the Migrants as Episcopal Delegate and in collaboration with the “Migrantes” Diocesan Commission of Parma.

“Since I am a Priest, I now want to make every effort to be the first to understand first-hand what the world loves, pursues, suffers; the first in searching for, empathising, suffering; the first in being available and sacrificing myself, in the most possible human manner”^[3] (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin).

“…I have long been awaiting for the chance to thank you for the ministry that you entrusted to me: ‘being among the people,’ even if I did not ever imagine that it would be at the service of immigrants. This makes me remember with pleasure the saying ‘cassava bears fruit where it is thrown’…” (from a note sent to the Superior General, Fr. Luigi Menegazzo, December 15^th, 2011).

He was hospitalised due to worsening health. On November 18^th, 2023, Fr. Raimondo was brought by the angels in front of the Most High to receive the recompense of the good and loyal servant^[4].
