Ricordando P. Menegazzo
Domenica 15 Gennaio ci siamo recati a Facca di Cittadella, dove vive la famiglia di P. Menegazzo. Abbiamo partecipato all’Eucarestia nella Parrocchia di Santa Maria Assunta. Eravamo presenti dalla DG, dalla Casa Madre e dalle case di Vicenza e Zelarino. Si sono uniti alla celebrazione anche vari familiari di saveriani residenti nella zona. Ci aveva convocato la memoria del nostro Padre generale P. Luigi Menegazzo. All’avvicinarsi del trigesimo della sua morte (18 Dicembre 2016), la sua Parrocchia ha voluto ricordarlo organizzando per la sera di Sabato, 14 gennaio, un concerto Gospel. A questo primo evento, erano presenti alcuni confratelli di Vicenza, tra i quali P. Tommaso Frigo che, con un breve intervento, ha ricordato P. Menegazzo e la sua attività missionaria. Durante la S. Messa di Domenica 15 – presieduta dal parroco Don Luigi Tellatin e che ha visto la presenza di molta gente, incluso giovani e ragazzi – è stata battezzata anche una bambina, Maddalena; e ciò ha dato un particolare tocco di festa. Stavamo celebrando la vita cristiana, anche quella del nostro confratello, ringraziando il Signore per il dono che è stato per la sua famiglia, per la comunità cristiana di Facca, per noi saveriani e per la Chiesa tutta.
Nel condividere con l’assemblea Eucaristica alcune riflessioni, ci siamo lasciati guidare dalla liturgia domenicale.
P. Menegazzo ci mostra la testimonianza di una vita tutta donata all’annuncio del Regno, fragilità incluse; anzi il Signore si serve anche di queste per la sua missione, perché la salvezza giunga fino ai confini della terra! Anche p. Luigi, come il servo di Jahvè descritto da Isaia, fin da giovane aveva il desiderio di offrire la sua vita a Dio: egli non voleva altro che seguire Gesù con la vocazione missionaria.
L’icona del Vangelo dell’ Agnello di Dio che toglie il peccato del mondo rivela il vero volto di Dio che è compassione, misericordia, dono e che si fa “incontro” nella vita di Gesù Cristo. P. Menegazzo, come missionario, ha cercato di incarnare questo stile di Cristo in molti modi. Ne segnaliamo tre: a) l’amore alla cultura come via per il Vangelo, manifestato nell’interesse per conoscere la lingua, le tradizioni, l’arte, la storia, il modo di vivere e pensare del popolo giapponese; b) la sua capacità di soffrire per le sofferenze degli altri e di gioire per le loro gioie; l’attenzione concreta ai poveri, anche quando era a Roma come vicario generale è stato spesso strumento efficace per aiuti anche economici alle nostre missioni (anche attraverso i contributi del mercatino per le missioni gestito da alcune signore di Facca, tra le quali sua mamma Vittoria); c) la ricerca costante della volontà di Dio, come si è potuto constatare nelle ultime settimane, nel momento della sofferenza, quando P. Menegazzo ancora aveva voglia di vivere, guarire e lavorare per la missione. Sul letto dell’ospedale ha dovuto dire e ripetere con tutto sé stesso: Ecco io vengo per fare la tua volontà perché - come scriveva a un confratello - ciò che è importante è fare tutto quello che è possibile e doveroso e chiedere la grazia di seguire fedelmente la volontà di Dio ora, e non domani.
Dopo l’Eucarestia, insieme a suo fratello Paolo ci siamo recati al cimitero comunale di Cittadella. Lì P. Luigi riposa, nello stesso loculo con i suoi genitori. Abbiamo pregato brevemente e poi abbiamo visitato – nello stesso cimitero – anche la tomba della sorella saveriana Lucia Vallotto e della maestra Parolin, grande animatrice vocazionale che tanti saveriani hanno conosciuto. Il momento di famiglia è poi continuato con il pranzo, offerto da Paolo, sua moglie Roberta e il figlio Pierpaolo, a casa loro e con una breve visita a Cittadella, con tanto di cicerone. È stato bello ricordare tanti episodi e tanti nomi di confratelli saveriani passati in casa Menegazzo, quasi a farla sembrare un’altra casa saveriana! Ringraziamo la famiglia di Paolo per la squisita ospitalità e ci siamo promessi a vicenda di non dimenticarci gli uni degli altri. Lo dice bene lo stesso Paolo Menegazzo: “ … la vostra vicinanza per noi è stata basilare per aiutarci a superare questo triste momento. Ho perso un fratello, l'unico che avevo, ma ne ho trovati tanti. Per quanto ci riguarda non possiamo che ringraziarvi tutti di vero cuore per tutto ciò che avete fatto. Spero in qualche modo di poter contraccambiare, non so come ma troverò il modo. Grazie, grazie, grazie ancora a te e a tutti i tuoi confratelli, da parte mia di Roberta e Pierpaolo.”
“Di sicuro si può dire che P. Menegazzo è stato tutto per la missione. Non ha mai pensato ad altro, non si è mai interessato d’altro…” (P. Benzoni). Ci lascia una ricca eredità morale, spirituale e intellettuale. Speriamo che la sua comunità di Facca e anche noi saveriani possiamo coltivarne la memoria, anche con una iniziativa annuale ad hoc a carattere missionario, magari coinvolgendo anche i Centri Missionari delle diocesi di Padova e/o Vicenza.

Remembering Fr. Menegazzo
On Sunday, 15 January, a group of Xaverians and Xaverian Sisters went to Facca di Cittadella, where the family of Fr. Menegazzo lives. We took part in the Eucharist in the parish of Santa Maria Assunta. There were representatives of the General Direction, the Mother House and the houses of Vicenza e Zelarino, as well as various relatives of Xaverians who reside in the area. We had been brought together by the memory of our late Superior General, Fr. Luigi Menegazzo. As his month’s mind drew near (+18 December 2016), his Parish wished to remember him by organizing a Gospel concert, which took place on the evening of Saturday, 14 January. This first event was attended by some confreres of Vicenza, among them Fr. Tommaso Frigo, who remembered Fr. Menegazzo and his missionary activity in a brief intervention. During the Mass on Sunday, 15 January – which was presided over by the parish priest, Fr. Luigi Tellatin and was attended by many people, including young people and children – we also celebrated the baptism of a baby girl, Maddalena and this gave a festive flavor to the occasion. We were celebrating the Christian life, including the Christian life of our late confrere, thanking the Lord for the gift that he was to his family, the Christian community of Facca, the Xaverians and the entire Church.
In sharing some reflections with the Eucharistic assembly, we took our inspiration from the Sunday liturgy.
Fr. Menegazzo shows us the witness of a life entirely given to the proclamation of the Gospel, fragilities included; indeed, the Lord makes also uses these fragilities for his mission, so that His salvation might reach the ends of the earth! Fr. Luigi too, like the servant of Yahweh described by Isaiah, wanted to offer his life to God from a very young age: his only desire was to follow Jesus in the missionary vocation.
The Gospel image of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world reveals the true face of God, who is compassion and mercy, a gift that becomes “encounter” in the life of Jesus Christ. As a missionary, Fr. Menegazzo tried to embody this style of Christ in many ways. We draw your attention to three of them: a) his love of culture as a way for the Gospel, made manifest in his interest in knowing the language, traditions, art, history and the way of living and thinking of the Japanese people; b) his ability to suffer for the sufferings of others and to rejoice at their joys; his concrete attention to the poor, even when he was in Rome as Vicar General and was often an effective instrument for providing help (including financial help) to our missions (even through the contributions of the local market for the missions that was managed by some ladies of Facca, among them his mother Vittoria); c) his constant search for the will of God, as could be seen in the last weeks of his illness and suffering, when Fr. Menegazzo still wanted to live, get better and work for the mission. On his hospital bed he had to repeat with his entire being: Here I am, I come to do your will because, as he wrote to a confrere, it is important that we do all that is possible and dutiful and ask for the grace to follow God’s will faithfully now, and not tomorrow.
After the Eucharist, we went with his brother Paolo to the cemetery of Cittadella, where Fr. Luigi rests in the same tomb as his parents. We prayed briefly and then – in the same cemetery – we visited also the tomb of the Xaverian Sister Lucia Vallotto and the teacher Ms. Parolin, who was a great vocation animator known by many Xaverians. The family of Fr. Menegazzo, his brother Paolo and his wife Roberta with their son Pierpaolo, offered us lunch at their home, followed by a short visit to Cittadella with a tour guide. It was good to remember many episodes and the many Xaverian confreres who have passed through the Menagazzo house, almost as if it were yet another Xaverian house! We thank the family of Paolo for their exquisite hospitality and we all promised that we will not forget each other. In the eloquent words of Paolo Menegazzo: “ … your solidarity with us was vital in helping us to deal with this sad experience. I have lost a brother, the only one I had, but I have found many others. We can only thank you with all our heart for everything you have done. I hope that I can repay you in some way, I do not know how, but I will find a way. Thank you, thank you, thank you, to you and all your confreres, on behalf of myself, Roberta and Pierpaolo.”
“We can safely say that Fr. Menegazzo lived entirely for the mission. He never thought of anything else, nor was he interested in anything else …” (Fr. Benzoni). He leaves us a rich moral, spiritual and intellectual heritage. We hope that his community of Facca and the Xaverians will cherish his memory, also with an annual ad hoc missionary initiative, perhaps involving also the Missionary Centers of the diocese of Padua and/or Vicenza.
