Luigi Menegazzo

2317/500

Aveva 64 anni compiuti.

Riposi in pace.

FR. LUIGI MENEGAZZO

Fr. Luigi Menegazzo died of heart failure, on 18 December 2016, in the Santo Spirito hospital, Rome.

Born in Cittadella (Padua, Italy), on 16 July 1952, he was 64 years old.

At the end of primary school he joined the Xaverians on 26 September 1963, in Vicenza, and began the journey that would lead him to fulfil his missionary vocation. His option was clearly expressed in his application for the Apostolic Promise, at the end of junior high school, in Zelarino. He wrote: “I make the apostolic promise serenely because I desire nothing more than to follow Jesus in the vocation that he has given me. I am therefore not motivated by sentiment, but by personal conviction. I have placed all my trust in the Lord and I take this step with total serenity, certain that I am not deceiving myself, the superiors, or the Lord” (24 March 1968). The same spirit of faith, sincerity and honesty was reaffirmed on the occasion of his Final Profession: “[I commit myself] to accept the Institute as it is, with its Constitutions, and to use the means it offers me – and no others– to live within it as an active, constructive, efficacious and available member”.  These values guided him for his entire Xaverian life and he bore witness to them in his missionary service and community life. Moreover, during the entire time he spent in the General Direction, they were the same firm points of reference in the help, encouragement, guidance and advice he gave to the confreres.

After Novitiate and the First Profession at S. Pietro in Vincoli (8.9.1969), Fr. Luigi moved to Tavernerio for classical Lyceum studies, then to Zelarino for the service of Prefect and, finally, to Parma for the Introductory Year and Theology. He was ordained priest on 25 September 1977.

After his ordination he continued his studies in Rome at the Gregorian University, where he obtained a Masters in Missiology in 1980. The following year he left for Japan, his mission country, where, after studying the language, he carried out his missionary service, first as assistant priest and then as parish priest of the parish of Nichinan/Aburatsu.

He was called back to Italy in 1989 for service as lecturer in the Parma Theology community; he returned to Japan in 1994, where he carried out various tasks: parish priest in Tamana (1994-1998), Vice-Regional Superior and then Regional Superior from 1998 until 2001.

In the unanimous testimony of the confreres of Japan, “Fr. Luigi, before being our Superior General, was a very dear brother for us, with whom we shared a common enthusiasm for the proclamation of the Gospel. We shared many moments of joy and difficulty, and his passionate, faithful and creative missionary enthusiasm was always an example and guide to us. Many members of the faithful days have expressed their sorrow, as have many non-Christian friends who were always grateful to him and close to him”.

During the General Chapter of 2001 he was elected Vicar General, a task that he also carried out in the successive six-year term, until 2013, when he was elected Superior General. His mandate was scheduled to last until 2019, but the Lord had other plans.

The XVI General Chapter had asked the new General Direction to re-launch the mission and renew the Xaverian commitment in it” (RMX 5).

Fr. Luigi has left us his last “repositioning” in the presentation of the Calendario Saveriano 2017, a modest but important instrument. “It guides us, silently, towards holiness. It is the liturgical guide of our days, supplying us with the precise indications on the Word of God that we must read, mediate and put into practice. The Scripture references, which prepare us to the Eucharist, are accompanied by the celebrations of the Saints and the feasts and solemnities of the Lord and of the Mother of God.

It not only indicates the contents of the faith, but also the concrete modalities for living according to the Will of God. The journey towards holiness is nourished, for us Xaverians, by the words of the Founder, which give a sense of serenity and trust at the start of each day. Furthermore, this Calendario keeps our Family united through the commemoration of our birthdays and of our deceased confreres and sisters. It is also presents the living history of our Congregation through dates and names that remind us of important events … our entire Family is there, with the names and surnames of all, from the beginnings of our Congregation.

[Let us keep it always with us]… our life journey will be easier, because we will be united”.

May he rest in peace.
