DOUALA – CAMERUN – LA CORAGGIOSA VOCE DEL SUO PASTORE: “l’ingiustizia sistemica che circonda l’arresto, la detenzione e l’incarcerazione di molti Camerunesi”.
Il 29 giugno 2026, festa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo, patroni della Cattedrale, Mons. Samuel Kleda, arcivescovo di Douala, ha pubblicato una Lettera pastorale “sulle condizioni carcerarie”, un “appello alla conversione per l’umanizzazione delle carceri in Camerun”. Egli prende l’avvio dal versetto evangelico: “Ero in carcere e siete venuti a trovarmi” (Mt 25,36) e descrive “l’ingiustizia sistemica che circonda l’arresto, la detenzione e l’incarcerazione di molti Camerunesi”. Denuncia fra l’altro “l’intollerabile pratica dei sequestri e delle detenzioni in luoghi segreti” e tutto l’iter penoso di chi finisce nelle maglie del sistema giudiziario fino alla “realtà infernale delle prigioni”, sovraffollate al 500% e ai “procedimenti penali spesso distorti”, a causa della pratica della corruzione. Rivolge un concreto appello a tutti, cristiani, persone di buona volontà e autorità, ammonendo: “Ignorare la sofferenza del detenuto è ignorare Cristo”. Lettera chiara e coraggiosa. DOUALA, CAMEROON – THE COURAGEOUS VOICE OF A SHEPHERD: “the systemic injustice surrounding the arrest, detention and imprisonment of many Cameroonians.”
On June 29th, 2026, feast of Saints Peter and Paul, patron saints of his Cathedral, Msgr. Samuel Kleda, Archbishop of Douala, published a pastoral letter “on prison conditions” in which he calls for a “conversion towards the humanization of prisons in Cameroon.” The bishop draws inspiration from the Gospel’s passage “I was in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25:36), and describes the “systematic injustice surrounding the arrest, detention and imprisonment of many Cameroonians.” Among other things, he denounces the “unbearable practice of kidnappings and detentions in secret places,” as well as the entire painful ordeal endured by those caught up in the judicial system, right down to the “infernal reality of prisons” – which are 500% overcrowded – and the corruption that “often distorts criminal proceedings.” He issues a heartfelt appeal to everyone – Christians, people of good will, and those in authority – and warns that: “To ignore the suffering of an inmate is to ignore Christ.” It is a clear and courageous letter.
