Siamo giunti il giorno 10 nella Casa Regionale, a Makeni. Abbiamo visitato la Cattedrale e il Centro Pastorale Diocesano. La città, notevolmente migliorata nelle infrastrutture, sta vivendo un momento socialmente particolare, a motivo della epidemia di Ebola. Sabato pomeriggio e tutta la domenica, la città sembra deserta: i negozi e le varie attività sono interdette. La Celebrazione Eucaristica nella parrocchia S. Guido M. Conforti è stata vivace, pur notando un calo numerico di partecipazione, sempre causato dallo stesso motivo. L'Amministratore Apostolico della Diocesi di Makeni, P. N. Paganelli, ci ha notificato che sta per arrivare un laboratorio per la diagnostica dell'Ebola, finanziato dalla CEI per interesse del Prof. Colizzi dell'Università Torvergata. Lo stesso laboratorio servirà poi per la diagnostica delle varie forme di epatite. Sembra che questa epidemia stia piano piano diminuendo: sarebbe finalmente la fine di un penoso e grave lungo periodo per questo Paese.

On 10 January we arrived in the Regional House. We visited the Cathedral and the Diocesan Pastoral Center. The infrastructures of the city have been considerably improved, though it is experiencing all the problems connected with the Ebola epidemic. From Saturday afternoon through the whole of Sunday, the city seemed deserted: shops were closed and various other activities were forbidden. The Eucharistic celebration in the parish of St. Guido M. Conforti was lively, though there was a visible reduction in the number of people present. The Apostolic Administrator of Makeni Diocese, Fr. N. Paganelli, informed us that they will soon have a laboratory for the diagnosis of Ebola, which has been financed by the Italian Bishops’ Conference, thanks to an intervention by Prof. Colizzi of the Tor Vergata University in Rome. The same laboratory will also be able to diagnose the various forms of hepatitis. It seems that this epidemic is slowly diminishing and this would finally bring to an end a long and distressing period for this country.
