Aksanti sanaaaaaa... Yesu, Bwana Mungu wangu na Mwalimu wangu! Nakungoja... Alleluja! (Antonio Trettel sx)

60 YEARS AS MISSIONARY PRIEST: “Aksanti sana! Yesu, Bwana Mungu wangu na Mwalimu wangu.” (Thank you so much! Jesus, my God, Lord, and Master. I am waiting for you... Alleluia.)
I have been asked to recall the anniversary which I would rather live in the greatest silence possible, not because I do not feel the need to celebrate the Lord for his innumerable and wonderful initiatives and surprises out of love for me along my life journey, but because I am well aware that, while he placed a lot of trust in me, I made him look bad many times. […]
Truly, mine has been a ‘strange’ journey, with many unexpected turns, which later, however, I found to be safe, beautiful and, at least for me, very beneficial! I was ordained a priest (with a very special anticipation of the use of the post-Council rite – a permission Fr. Franco Sottocornola was able to secure for us from Rome – and, in fact, that was also my “first Mass”) in the Duomo of Parma, through the laying on of hands of Card. Carlo Confalonieri. It was a very solemn Mass, part of a series of celebrations planned by Fr. Giovanni Castelli on the centenary of the birth of our Father Founder, the saint bishop Guido Maria Conforti. The ordination was a very important milestone in the journey of my life, but not the only one, nor the first.
Before October 17th, 1965, among other things, there was the call to go to ‘the far missions,’ a call that became stronger and clear around the year 1950. And there was the adventurous search for the address of a missionary Family that was willing to welcome me. By chance, I found such family in the Xaverian Missionaries of Parma thanks to a copy of Voci d’Oltre Mare […], which seemed fallen from Heaven. The Xaverians welcomed me at once, even if I was completely unknown to them, and so I joined the apostolini (minor seminarians) in Posatora, Ancona, with the unexpectedly and affectionate embrace from Fr. Mario Veronesi, the rector, the first Xaverian I had ever met, who would leave the following year for Bangladesh, where he would soon die as a martyr for his missionary zeal and his great charity towards that people! Without words, his gesture touched my heart and immediately gave me a glimpse of the…Xaverian charism. This is why my sincere and deepest thank goes to the Lord, not only for these 60 years as missionary priest (I do prefer ‘missionary priest’ rather than priest missionary), but also for all the love, immense and ‘amazing’ love, which God showed me all along the rest of my journey, from when I was born till today; I am sure that the same love he will show me in the short moment that remains of this ‘first stage’ in my life. Aksanti sanaaaaaa... Yesu, Bwana Mungu wangu na Mwalimu wangu! Nakungoja... Alleluja! (Antonio Trettel s.x.)
