Il 24 marzo ricorre la memoria del vescovo San Oscar Arnulfo Romero (ucciso il 24 marzo 1980 nel El Salvador, beatificato il 23.05.2015 e il canonizzato 14.11.2018). Ricevendo un gruppo di pellegrini, papa Francesco, disse:  “…Il martirio di monsignor Romero non avvenne solo al momento della sua morte; fu un martirio-testimonianza, sofferenza anteriore, persecuzione anteriore, fino alla sua morte. Ma anche posteriore, perché una volta morto — io ero un giovane sacerdote e ne sono stato testimone — fu diffamato, calunniato, infangato, ossia il suo martirio continuò persino da parte dei suoi fratelli nel sacerdozio e nell’episcopato. Cioè, è bello vederlo anche così: come un uomo che continua a essere martire. Ebbene, credo che ora quasi nessuno osi più farlo. Dopo aver dato la sua vita, continuò a darla lasciandosi colpire da tutte quelle incomprensioni e calunnie".

In questa esperienza di fede, incarnata profondamente nel Vangelo e nella sequela di Gesù, San Oscar Arnulfo Romero diviene modello del missionario “testimone - martire”: infatti, è proprio nell'incontro con l'altro - il salvadoregno povero ed emarginato - che il vescovo scopre il volto di Dio, ascoltandone il grido. La sua testimonianza ci accompagna e ci sostiene nel vissuto quotidiano della vocazione missionaria. (Carlos Eduardo Reynoso Tostado sx).

March 24^th marks the memory of Bishop St Oscar Arnulfo Romero (murdered on March 24^th, 1980 in El Salvador, beatified on May 5^th, 2015 and canonized on November 14^th, 2018). On one occasion, as he welcomed a group of pilgrims, Pope Francis said: “The martyrdom of Msgr. Romero did not happen only at the moment of his death; his was a martyrdom, a witness, a previous suffering and persecution that lasted till his death and which continued after it. In fact, once he was dead – I was a young priest and can bear witness to it – he was defamed, slandered, besmirched; in other words, his martyrdom was prolonged at the hands of his brothers in priesthood and episcopate. However, it is beautiful to look at him even from this perspective: he is a man that continues being a martyr. … After having been slain, he continued laying down his life by allowing to become the target of much incomprehension and smear.” For his experience of faith deeply rooted in the Gospel and being disciple of Jesus, St Oscar Arnulfo Romero becomes a model of the “missionary martyr” (i.e. witness): It is precisely in the encounter with the other - the poor and marginalized Salvadoran - that this bishop discovered the face of God and listened to his cry.
