Il primo pomeriggio del 1° aprile 2025, un gruppo di confratelli  della comunità Saveriana del IV° Piano della Casa Madre ha visitato Marore, frazione di Parma e la “Comunità Betania”. Un pesce d’aprile del tutto particolare che ci ha fatto scoprire una realtà che ha più di 40 anni e che anima la storia delle “cose belle” della nostra città di Parma. Dopo esserci presentati individualmente, il Direttore della “Comunità Betania” ha introdotto la “missione” di questa comunità: “Avevo cominciato fin dalla mia presenza nella Parrocchia dell'Immacolata di Parma ad occuparmi delle problematiche del ‘Servizio Civile nel territorio’ ed è lì che avevo creato un gruppo di giovani che  potesse offrire un servizio nelle varie forme di povertà e di ‘scarto’ che stavano spuntando a Parma e dintorni.  I Vescovi avevano detto chiaramente  di ‘Ripartire dagli ultimi’. Mi ero posta la domanda allora. Ma chi sono gli ‘ultimi’ in questa società parmense? E da qui che è nata ‘Betania’. Proprio qui a Marore. Mi diedi da fare. Seguii un corso sul ‘tema della droga’ a Roma’. E solo dopo qualche settimana cominciai (1983) questo cammino che ha fatto nascere ‘Betania’ e che attualmente  accoglie ben 160 persone e garantisce un servizio di accoglienza  anche a scopo terapeutico e riabilitativo dalle tossicodipendenze…”.

On the early afternoon of April 1^st, 2025, a group of confreres from the Fourth Floor Community of the Mother House visited Marore, a suburb of Parma, and its ‘Comunità Betania’ (Bethany Community, a rehabilitation community). This visit has been a real April Fools’ Day prank that made us discover a more than 40-year old reality which contributes to the history of ‘beautiful things’ that can be found in our city of Parma. After our individual self-introduction, the Director of ‘Comunità Betania’ illustrated the “mission” of his community. 

At the time of my life at the Immaculate Conception Parish in Parma, I started to deal with the problems associated with the so-called ‘Civil Service in the local territory’. It was then that I created a group of young people who could offer their service in dealing with various forms of poverty and ‘waste’ (i.e marginalisation – tr.) that were sprouting up in Parma and the surrounding area. Our Bishops had clearly said to ‘Start again from the last’. I then asked myself the question: ‘Who are the ‘last ones’ here, in this society of Parma? And this is how ‘Betania’ was born. Right here in Marore. I got busy. I took a course on ministry to people addicted to drugs in Rome. And just a few weeks later I began (1983) this journey that led to the birth of ‘Betania’, and which currently accommodates 160 people and guarantees a reception service also for therapeutic and rehabilitation purposes from drug addiction…
