I Missionari Saveriani hanno iniziato la loro presenza in Messico con la fondazione del Collegio “Istituto Culturale dell'Occidente” (I.C.O.) a Mazatlán, Sinaloa, nel nord della nazione. Nei piani dei padri fondatori, l’intenzione della fondazione dell’ ICO non era quello di un centro di animazione missionaria e di promozione vocazionale. Per quanto riguarda, invece, i Collegi “Centro Unión” (San Juan del Rio, Querétaro) e “Centro Cultural Alteño” (Arandas, Jalisco), la loro fondazione è stata pensata allo scopo di sostenere la formazione dei seminaristi delle nostre case apostoliche (San Juan del Río e Arandas). Sono stati fin dall’inizio, e lo sono tuttora, centri di formazione accademica e culturale, di educazione alla fede e della condivisione del carisma Saveriano. Questi centri si impegnano ad essere un segno della Chiesa missionaria nei rispettivi ambienti.

Oggi si deve vedere con occhi nuovi il grande lavoro realizzato dai saveriani in questi anni nel campo dell'educazione in questi centri accademici. Si tratta di un'opera che ha contribuito costruttivamente alla storia, alla cultura e all'evangelizzazione in Messico. Tanti sono i giovani e le famiglie che hanno accolto la proposta educativa in questo progetto educativo saveriano. Migliaia di bambini, adolescenti e giovani hanno conosciuto il dono del Vangelo del Signore attraverso i testimoni della missione: in classe, nelle liturgie, nelle convivenze, nelle attività didattiche, nei campi di lavoro. Molti insegnanti si identificano con questo progetto e si sentono parte di questa famiglia.

Anche la società civile riconosce e onora la formazione ai valori umani e cristiani voluta da questi tre centri educativi. Siamo più consapevoli e maggiormente coinvolti nel proporre la vocazione missionaria Saveriana a questa famiglia di giovani. Si tratta di un ottimo strumento di annuncio e testimonianza: l’immeritato compito di accompagnare i bambini, gli adolescenti e i giovani insieme alle loro famiglie ad accogliere il dono del Vangelo per testimoniarlo nel cuore della società. The Xaverian Missionaries began their presence in Mexico by establishing the College “Instituto Cultural de Occidente” (Cultural Institute of the West, or I.C.O.) in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, that is, in the North of the country. According to the plan of the founding fathers, the purpose of I.C.O. was not that of a centre for mission awareness and vocation ministry. As for the colleges “Centro Unión” (San Juan del Rio, Querétaro) and “Centro Cultural Alteño” (Arandas, Jalisco), their foundation was meant to support the training of the seminarians in our seminaries (San Juan del Río and Arandas). However, since the beginning, these colleges have been and continue being centres of academic and cultural formation, of education to the faith and sharing of the Xaverian Charism. These centres endeavour to be a sign of the missionary Church in their respective milieus.

Today, it is necessary to look with new eyes at the great work carried out by the Xaverians in the field of education through these academic centres. It represents a commitment which has contributed in a constructive fashion to the history, culture and evangelisation of Mexico. Many are the young people and families that chose the training programmes prosed by the Xaverian education project. Thousands of children, adolescents and youth came to know the gift of the Lord’s Gospel through the witnesses to the mission: in classrooms, during liturgies, moments of life together, educational activities, and summer camps. Many are the teachers who identify with this project and feel part of this family.

Civil society too recognises and honours the formation to human and Christian values promoted by these three education centres. We have become more motivated and more involved in the effort to propose the Xaverian missionary vocation to this family of young people. The great task of accompanying children, adolescents and youth, as well as their families, towards an encounter with the gift of the Gospel and its communication in the midst of society is an excellent tool of proclamation and witness.
