Ci scrive p. Mario Pulcini: “Durante la notte tra il sabato 21 e la domenica 22 dicembre, le piogge torrenziali che si sono abbattute soprattutto sui quartieri nord della capitale Bujumbura. Decine di case sono state spazzate via dalla violenza delle acque del torrente Cari che scorre tra le case di Winterekwa, quartiere molto popolato della nostra parrocchia di Kamenge. Ancora non si conosce il numero esatto delle vittime; si parla di una ventina di morti, decine di feriti e molte famiglie rimaste senza abitazione e ora ospitate in una grande scuola non lontana dal luogo della tragedia. Le vittime sono soprattutto donne e bambini sorpresi nel sonno dalla violenza delle acque del piccolo torrente gonfiatosi a dismisura anche a causa di grossi detriti caduti dalla collina e che hanno in parte ostruito il corso delle acque. Con l’aiuto della Caritas diocesana, della Croce Rossa nazionale siamo immediatamente intervenuti per prestare i primi soccorsi ai sopravissuti. Purtroppo, le piogge torrenziali di questi giorni hanno già provocato altre simili tragedie in diverse zone del nostro Burundi.”

Fr. Mario Pulcini s.x. writes:  “During the night, between Saturday 21st and Sunday December 22^nd, torrential rains hit mainly the northern districts of the capital Bujumbura.  Dozens of houses have been swept away by the violence of the waters of the Cari stream that flows between the houses of Winterekwa, a very populated district of our parish of Kamenge.  The exact number of victims is not yet known.  There are about 20 dead, dozens injured and many families left homeless and now housed in a large school, not far from the site of the tragedy.  The victims are mainly women and children surprised in their sleep by the violence of the waters of the small stream  that had swelled out of proportion, also due to large debris which had fallen from the hills and had partially obstructed the course of the waters.  With the help of the Diocesan Caritas, the National Red Cross, we immediately intervened to provide first aid to the survivors.  Unfortunately, the torrential rains of these days have already caused other similar tragedies in different areas of our Burundi.”
