In vista del Giubileo del 2025 papa Francesco ha deciso di creare presso il Dicastero delle Cause dei Santi una Commissione per elaborare un ‘catalogo’ di tutti coloro che hanno versato il loro sangue per confessare Cristo nell’ultimo quarto di secolo. La ricerca sarà estesa a tutte le confessioni cristiane e non soltanto ai cattolici.

Scrive papa Francesco nella Lettera pubblicata il 5 luglio 2023: “I martiri nella Chiesa sono testimoni della speranza che deriva dalla fede in Cristo e incita alla vera carità. La speranza mantiene viva la profonda convinzione che il bene è più forte del male, perché Dio in Cristo ha vinto il peccato e la morte…Si tratta di continuare la ricognizione storica per raccogliere le testimonianze di vita, fino allo spargimento del sangue, di queste nostre sorelle e questi nostri fratelli, affinché la loro memoria spicchi come tesoro che la comunità cristiana custodisce. La ricerca riguarderà non soltanto la Chiesa cattolica, ma si estenderà a tutte le confessioni cristiane”.

Il lavoro della Commissione permetterà di affiancare ai martiri, riconosciuti ufficialmente dalla Chiesa, le testimonianze di “questi nostri fratelli e sorelle, all’interno di un panorama vasto in cui risuoni l’unica voce della martyria dei cristiani”.

La Commissione si avvarrà  del contributo attivo delle Chiese particolari, degli istituti religiosi e missionari e di tutte le altre realtà cristiane.

In view of the forthcoming Jubilee of 2025, Pope Francis has decided to set up in the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints a Commission for drawing up a ‘catalogue’ of all those who have shed their blood to confess Christ and bear witness to His Gospel over the last 25 years. The research will extend to include all Christian denominations, not simply the Catholic faithful.

In a Letter published on July 5^th, 2023, Pope Francis writes: “Martyrs in the Church are witnesses of the hope that comes from faith in Christ and incites to true charity. Hope keeps alive the deep conviction that good is stronger than evil, because God in Christ conquered sin and death. (…) It is therefore a matter of continuing historical research in order to gather the testimonies of life, up to the shedding of blood, of these sisters and brothers of ours, so that their memory can stand as a treasure cherished by the Christian community. The research will concern not only the Catholic Church, but will extend to all Christian denominations.”

The work of the Commission will make it possible to place side by side with the martyrs, officially recognized by the Church, the documented testimonies “of these brothers and sisters of ours, within a vast panorama in which the single voice of the martyria of Christians resounds.”

The Commission will avail itself of the active contribution of local Churches, religious and missionary institutes and all other Christian realities.
