Il messaggio di papa Francesco si sviluppa in due parti. La prima è dedicata alla presenza di Dio tra il popolo in cammino, quel camminare “con” così importante nell’esperienza del popolo dell’alleanza. In molti testi veterotestamentari viene evocata l’immagine della “tenda” come luogo della manifestazione di questa presenza, garanzia di protezione e di guida certa nell’itineranza verso la Terra promessa.

La seconda parte del messaggio si sofferma su una diversa accezione della presenza divina tra il suo popolo in cammino: Dio cammina “nel” suo popolo. Il Signore “si identifica con gli uomini e le donne in cammino attraverso la storia — in particolare con gli ultimi, i poveri, gli emarginati —, come prolungando il mistero dell’Incarnazione”.

Pope Francis’ message is divided in two parts. The first is dedicated to God’s presence among his walking people. It is about the walking “with” that is so important in the experience of the people of the covenant. Many places in the Old Testament evoke the image of the “tent” as the place where such presence is manifested, and as a guarantee of protection and guidance in the journey to the Promised Land.

The second part of the message dwells on the different significance of the divine presence among his walking people: God walks “within” his people. The Lord “identifies himself with men and women on their journey through history, particularly with the least, the poor and the marginalised. In this we see an extension of the mystery of the Incarnation.”
