GOMA – RDC - BASILICA DI SAN PAOLO FUORI LE MURA – ROMA: “Mantenere un cuore pulito”

Domenica 15 giugno 2025, alle ore 17.30, nella Basilica di San Paolo Fuori le Mura, Roma, si terrà la celebrazione di Beatificazione, presieduta dal Card. Marcello Semeraro (prefetto del Dicastero delle cause dei santi), del martire Floribert Bwana Chui, nato il 13 giugno 1981 a Goma, capoluogo del Kivu, nell’Est della Repubblica Democratica del Congo.
Durante gli studi, che si concludono con una laurea in Giurisprudenza, Floribert incontra la Comunità di Sant’Egidio che lo porta a visitare i poveri, in particolare i ragazzi di strada nell’area dei Grandi Laghi.
Papa Francesco in occasione dell’incontro dei giovani radunati nello stadio di Kinshasa il 2 febbraio 2023, durante il suo viaggio nella Repubblica Democratica del Congo, parlando di Floribert Bwana Chui ebbe a dire:
“Mi viene in mente la testimonianza di un giovane come voi, Floribert: a soli ventisei anni, venne ucciso a Goma per aver bloccato il passaggio di generi alimentari deteriorati, che avrebbero danneggiato la salute della gente. Poteva lasciare andare, non lo avrebbero scoperto e ci avrebbe pure guadagnato. Ma, in quanto cristiano, pregò, pensò agli altri e scelse di essere onesto, dicendo no alla sporcizia della corruzione. Questo è mantenere non solo le mani pulite, ma il cuore pulito”.
La comunità di Goma, la comunità di Sant’Egidio, molti nostri confratelli rendono grazie per la testimonianza di fede e santità del giovane Floribert, che condivideva la vita nell’amore per i poveri e nella protezione dei più piccoli. Come funzionario della dogana alla frontiera con il Ruanda, attivo da quando era universitario nella Scuola della Pace di Sant’Egidio a Goma, si rifiutò di far passare, in cambio di soldi, carichi di cibo avariato che avrebbero messo a rischio la vita dei più poveri. Per questo, nel luglio del 2007, venne torturato e ucciso a soli ventisei anni.

GOMA, D.R.C. – BASILICA OF ST PAUL OUTSIDE THE CITY WALLS, ROME: “Keeping a clean heart”
On Sunday, June 15th, 2025, at 5:30 p.m., in the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, Rome, the Beatification of the martyr Floribert Bwana Chui will be held. The celebration will be presided over by Card. Marcello Semeraro (prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints). Martyr Floribert Bwana Chui was born on 13 June 1981 in Goma, capital of Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
During his law studies, Floribert met the Community of St. Egidio, which led him to visit the poor, especially the “street children” in the Great Lakes area.
As part of his trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on February 2nd, 2023, during the meeting with young people gathered at the stadium in Kinshasa, Pope Francis talked about Floribert Bwana Chui. He said:
"I am reminded of the testimony of a young man like you – Floribert. He was killed in Goma at the early age of twenty-six for preventing spoiled foods that would have harmed people’s health from going through the customs.
He could have let it go, people would not have found out and he would even have gained something. But as a Christian, he prayed, thought of others and chose to be honest, saying no to the filth of corruption. This is what keeping both your hands and your heart clean means.”
The community in Goma, the Community of St. Egidio, many of our confreres give thanks for the witness of faith and holiness of the young Floribert, who shared his life in love for the poor and the protection of the little ones. He was active in the St. Egidio’s School of Peace, Goma, since the days of his studies at the university. Then, as a customs officer at the border with Rwanda, he refused to allow, in exchange for money, cargoes of rotten food that would have put the lives of the poorest at risk. For this, in July 2007, he was tortured and killed at the age of twenty-six.
