Da un messaggio dei nostri confratelli ricevuto il 21 aprile 2024:

Da Domenica delle Palme (24 marzo 2024) ad oggi, Domenica del Buon Pastore (21 aprile 2024), stiamo vivendo una difficile situazione di inondazioni. In questi ultimi giorni, le inondazioni sono arrivate ad un livello che ha superato ogni aspettativa: i livelli, infatti, dell’acqua hanno già raggiunto anche la strada principale (a 100 metri dalla nostra abitazione), completamente sommersa fino alla frontiera tra la RdCongo e il Burundi. Davanti al terreno della costruenda parrocchia Beato Bakanja sì è creato un fiume che scarica l'acqua del laghetto Nyangara verso il lago Tanganika. A motivo dell’acqua alta, sono entrati nel nostro terreno vari ippopotami. Collocheremo del filo spinato per non permettere la loro entrata e l’avvicinamento alla nostra casa. Sabato 20 aprile 2024, un operaio ha rischiato di essere aggredito da uno di loro a 40 metri dall’ingresso principale della nostra abitazione e a 10 metri dal capanno dove vi è motore della pompa per l’acqua.

Centinaia di case costruite con mattoni crudi sono crollate; molti residenti hanno dovuto abbandonare le loro case per trovare riparo altrove, dai parenti o dagli amici in luoghi non inondati. Altre famiglie che non hanno dove andare, trascorrono la notte all’addiaccio o nelle tende dove l'acqua non è ancora arrivata.

Sabato 20 aprile 2024, i primi 30 prenovizi sono andati a Bujumbura accompagnati da due formatori. In questi giorni partiranno per Bukavu (Vamaro) anche i 20 novizi con il padre Maestro e un formatore. Rimangono a Kilomoni p. Piero Mazzochin (89 anni già compiuti) e il sottoscritto, p. Gianni Magnaguagno. Dipendendo dall’evolversi della situazione, non è escluso che anche noi dobbiamo lasciare il posto per metterci al riparo. Confidiamo nel Signore, Buon Pastore, e nella sua Mamma, che ci proteggano e ci aiutino a stare vicini soprattutto alla nostra gente. Pregate per noi e per la nostra gente. Grazie. Excerpt from a message of our confreres (received on April 21^st, 2024):

“From Palm Sunday (March 24^th, 2024) till today, Good Shepherd Sunday (April 21^st, 2024), we have been experiencing a difficult situation due to flooding. In recent days, the floods have risen to a level exceeding all expectations: in fact, water levels have already reached the main road (100 meters away from our home), which is completely submerged up to the border between D.R. Congo and Burundi. A river has taken shape in front of the Blessed Bakanja parish building site; it drains water from Nyangara Pond into Lake Tanganyika. With the rising water, several hippos have entered our land. We are going to place barbed wire to prevent them from intruding and approaching our home. On Saturday, April 20^th, 2024, a worker risked being attacked by one of them at 40 meters from the main entrance of our house and 10 meters from the shed where the engine of the water pump is located.

Hundreds of houses built with mud bricks collapsed; many residents had to abandon their homes to find shelter elsewhere and stay with their relatives or friends in places that were not flooded. Other families that have nowhere to go are spending the night outside or in tents set up where the water has not yet arrived. On Saturday, April 20^th, 2024, the first group of 30 pre-novices went to Bujumbura, accompanied by their two formators. In the coming days, the 20 novices, together with the Master and a formator, will also leave for Bukavu (Vamaro). Fr. Piero Mazzochin (who is already 89-year-old) and I, Fr. Gianni Magnaguagno, will remain in Kilomoni. Depending on how the situation will unfold, we cannot rule out the eventuality that we too may have to leave this place and find shelter elsewhere.  We trust in the Lord, the Good Shepherd, and in his Mom: they will protect us and help us remain close to our people.  Please, pray for us and for our people.
