Promossa nel 1993 dal Movimento Giovanile delle Pontificie Opere Missionarie (POM) d'Italia, la giornata di preghiera e di digiuno in memoria dei missionari martiri si svolge il 24 marzo, giorno in cui fu fucilato l'arcivescovo di San Salvador San Oscar Arnulfo Romero mentre celebrava la messa. “Il missionario martire è un tessitore di fraternità. Egli intreccia la propria esistenza con quella di Cristo, riscoprendo così se stesso come tralcio della stessa vite”, ricorda il Movimento. Secondo l’agenzia Fides, nel 2021 sono stati uccisi nel mondo 22 missionari: 13 sacerdoti, un religioso, 2 religiose, 6 laici; 11 in Africa, 7 in America, 3 in Asia, 1 in Europa. 

I giovani della nostra parrocchia San Bernardo (Kinshasa), assieme ai nostri confratelli studenti di teologia, hanno partecipato alla veglia di preghiera organizzata dalle POM, mercoledì 23 marzo alla parrocchia San Giuseppe. I giovani sono stati i protagonisti con letture bibliche, testimonianze, intercessioni. La veglia si è conclusa con la processione di 22 croci, simbolo dei testimoni del 2021.

In Congo aggiungiamo pure un ricordo particolare: in simili celebrazioni preghiamo pure per quei testimoni sequestrati e di cui non si sa più niente da diversi mesi e persino anni. La diocesi di Butembo-Beni conta ben 5 sacerdoti (due diocesani sequestrati nel 2017 e tre Assunzionisti nel 2012) di cui non si sa più niente (Irakiza Arcade sx).

The day of prayer and fasting in memory of the missionary martyrs, which was promoted in 1993 by the Italian Missionary Youth Movement of the Pontifical Mission Societies (POM), takes place on March 24^th, i.e., the day when the Archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Arnulfo Romero, was shot while celebrating Mass. As the Youth Movement rightly reminds, “A missionary martyr is a weaver of fraternity. His life is intertwined with Christ’s life; thus, he discovers that he is one among many branches belonging to the same vine”. According to Fides news agency, in 2021, 22 missionaries have been murdered all over the world: 13 priests, 1 man religious, 2 women religious, and 6 lay Christians; 11 lost their lives in Africa, 7 in the Americas, 3 in Asia and 1 in Europe.

On March 23^rd, the youth of our St Bernard Parish (Kinshasa), together with our confreres studying theology, will participate in a vigil of prayer organised by POM in St Joseph Parish. The youth will take the lead through Bible reading, witnesses, and prayers of intercession. The vigil will conclude with a procession of 22 crosses, symbolising all the martyrs of the year 2021.

In Congo we add some particular remembrance: during similar celebrations we likewise pray for those witnesses who have been abducted and whose whereabouts remain unknown after months or even years. The Diocese of Butembo-Beni has no information whatsoever about 5 of its priests, among whom two diocesan priests were abducted in 2017 and three Assumptionist fathers in 2012. (Irakiza Arcade sx)
