La firma di un accordo di pace a Washington lo scorso 4.12.2015 (tra la RDC ed il Rwanda) tanto atteso dalla popolazione dell’Est del paese è stata una vera e propria delusione. All’indomani di questo famoso e deludente accordo, i combattimenti si sono intensificati. I ribelli hanno rinforzato le loro posizioni, moltiplicando gli assalti in varie parti, soprattutto nella pianura del Ruzizi, fino a giungere ad occupare anche la città di Uvira, sede di tutte le istituzioni provinciali, e ultimo bastione della resistenza al nemico. Come sempre, piove sul bagnato: è la povera popolazione a pagare il tributo dei bombardamenti di questi ultimi giorni (decine di persone morte a Luvungi, Sange e Uvira). Una crisi umanitaria ignorata dai potenti di questo mondo, interessati solo alle pietre preziose del sottosuolo congolese. Ad Uvira la gente vive nella paura, dovuta ad un continuo andirivieni di militari Burundesi ed altri. I colpi delle armi si fanno sentire in diverse parti della città. Alcune persone stanno fuggendo ed altre non sanno che fare, ma anche la città ora è nelle mani dei ribelli. I nostri confratelli e le nostre sorelle Saveriane si trovano tutti a Kilomoni. Dicono di essere abbastanza sereni fino a questo momento. Chiedono la nostra preghiera. (Bernard Cibambo Rubibi sx)

The signing of a peace agreement in Washington on December 4, 2015 (between the DRC and Rwanda), eagerly awaited by the population of the eastern part of the country, was a real disappointment. In the aftermath of this famous and disappointing agreement, fighting intensified. The rebels reinforced their positions, multiplying their attacks in various areas, especially in the Ruzizi plain, until they occupied the city of Uvira, the seat of all provincial institutions and the last bastion of resistance to the enemy. As always, it never rains but it pours: it is the poor population that is paying the price for the bombings of recent days (dozens of people have died in Luvungi, Sange and Uvira). A humanitarian crisis ignored by the powerful of this world, interested only in the precious stones of the Congolese subsoil. In Uvira, people live in fear due to the constant comings and goings of Burundian and other military forces. Gunfire can be heard in various parts of the city. Some people are fleeing and others do not know what to do, but now the city has fallen into the hands of the rebels. Our confreres and Xaverian Sisters are all in Kilomoni.
