Il 24 marzo 2024 segna la 32^a Giornata dei Missionari Martiri. L’evento ha origine nella commemorazione di Sant’Oscar Romero, ucciso nella stessa data dell’anno 1980. Nel 1992, su proposta del Movimento Giovanile delle Pontificie Opere Missionarie, ora “Missio Giovani”, la Chiesa italiana istituì la Giornata dei Missionari Martiri. La data del 24 marzo fu scelta in modo simbolico, per sottolineare la fedeltà al Vangelo dimostrata da coloro che hanno offerto sé stessi nell’annuncio della Buona Notizia del Signore Gesù, in condizioni ostili e di violenza.

In AFRICA sono stati uccisi 9 missionari: 5 sacerdoti, 2 religiosi, 1 seminarista, 1 novizio.

NIGERIA:

• Don Isaac Achi, ucciso dalle fiamme durante un assalto alla sua parrocchia, nello Stato di Niger;
• Don Charles Onomhoale Igechi, aggredito da uomini armati, nello Stato di Edo;
• Il seminarista Na'aman Danlami, morto bruciato vivo nell’assalto di alcuni banditi alla parrocchia nello Stato di Kaduna;
• Il novizio benedettino Godwin Eze, rapito dal monastero di Eruku, Stato di Kwara, e poi ucciso dai rapitori.

BURKINA FASO:

• Don Jacques Yaro Zerbo, assassinato, nella regione di Boucle du Mouhoun, mentre si recava a svolgere attività pastorali;
• Fratel Moses Simukonde Sens, ucciso da un proiettile vagante nei pressi di un posto di blocco militare nella capitale, Ouagadougou.

TANZANIA:

• Don Pamphili Nada è morto dopo aver subito un’aggressione nella sua parrocchia, nella regione di Arusha.

CAMERUN:

• Fratel Cyprian Ngeh è stato aggredito e pugnalato a morte in strada, a Bamenda.

REPUBBLICA DEMOCRATICA DEL CONGO:

• Don Léopold Feyen è stato ucciso a Kinshasa, presso la parrocchia in cui svolgeva il servizio pastorale.

IN AMERICA sono stati uccisi 6 missionari: 1 Vescovo, 3 sacerdoti, 2 laiche.

MESSICO:

• Don Juan Angulo Fonseca ucciso a colpi di arma da fuoco nello stato di Jalisco.
• Javier García Villafaña è stato ucciso sulla strada che collega i municipi di Cuitzeo e Huandacareo, mentre si stava recando in automobile a celebrare la Messa;
• Gertrudis Cruz de Jesús e Gliserina Cruz Merino, giovani catechiste, sono state uccise nel corso di un’imboscata mentre si recavano ad una processione eucaristica, nello Stato di Oaxaca.

STATI UNITI D’AMERICA:

• Monsignor David O’Connell, Vescovo ausiliare di Los Angeles, è stato ucciso dal marito della governante;
• Don Stephen Gutgsell è morto in seguito ad una aggressione con arma da taglio avvenuta nella canonica della chiesa di Fort Cahloun, piccola comunità del Nebraska che guidava da 11 anni.

IN ASIA sono stati uccisi 4 laici.

FILIPPINE:

• Junrey Barbante e Janine Arenas vittime dell’ordigno fatto esplodere durante la celebrazione eucaristica nell’Università statale di Mindanao, nella provincia di Lanao del Sur. Erano due studenti cattolici e volontari della comunità della cappellania universitaria, impegnati nell’animazione liturgica.

PALESTINA:

• Samar Kamal Anton, e sua madre, Nahida Khalil Anton, sono state uccise dai cecchini mentre camminavano verso il convento delle suore di Madre Teresa, a Gaza. Una è stata uccisa mentre cercava di portare l'altra in salvo. Entrambe appartenevano ad un Gruppo di donne, cattoliche e ortodosse, impegnate in un cammino di fede e di apostolato soprattutto a favore dei poveri e dei disabili.

IN EUROPA è stato ucciso 1 laico. 

SPAGNA

• Diego Valencia, laico, sacrestano della parrocchia di Nuestra Señora de La Palma, ad Algesiras, è stato ucciso da un giovane marocchino armato di machete.

March 24^th, 2024, marks the 32^nd Missionary Martyrs’ Day. The event originates in the commemoration of St Oscar Romero, who was murdered on the same date in the year 1980. In 1992, in answer to the proposal by the Youth Movement of the Pontifical Mission Societies – now called ‘Missio Giovani’ –, the  Italian Church established the Day of the Missionary Martyrs. The choice of date, March 24^th, had a symbolic meaning: it highlights the fidelity to the Gospel which was demonstrated by the ones who offered their life to the proclamation of the Good News of the Lord Jesus, in hostile and violent circumstances.

IN AFRICA 9 missionaries have been killed: 5 priests, 2 religious, 1 seminarian, 1 novice.

NIGERIA

• Isaac Achi died in the fire caused by an attack against his parish, in the State of Niger;
• Charles Onomhoale Igechi was assaulted by armed men, in the State of Edo;
• Seminarian Na'aman Danlami was burnt alive in an attack by bandits on a parish in Kaduna State;
• the Benedictine novice Godwin Eze was abducted from the monastery of Eruku, State of Kwara, and then murdered by his kidnappers.

BURKINA FASO

• Jacques Yaro Zerbo was murdered in the region of Boucle du Mouhoun on his way to perform some pastoral activities;
• Moses Simukonde Sens was killed by a stray bullet near a military checkpoint in the capital, Ouagadougou.

TANZANIA

• Pamphili Nada died after suffering an attack on his parish, in the region of Arusha.

CAMEROON

• Cyprian Ngeh was attacked and stabbed to death in a street, in Bamenda.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

• Léopold Feyen was murdered in Kinshasa, in the parish he was carrying out his pastoral ministry.

 IN AMERICA,  6 missionaries were murdered: 1 bishop, 3 priests, 2 lay women.

 MEXICO:

• Juan Angulo Fonseca was shot dead in the state of Jalisco;
• Javier García Villafaña was murdered on the road connecting the municipalities of Cuitzeo and Huandacareo while he was going by car to celebrate a Mass;
• Gertrudis Cruz de Jesús and Gliserina Cruz Merino, young catechists, were killed in an ambush while they were going to attend a Eucharistic Procession, in the State of Oaxava.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA:

• David O’Connell, auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, was murdered by the husband of his housekeeper;
• Stephen Gutgsell died after being assaulted with a knife in the church rectory of Fort Cahlou, a small community in Nebraska which he had been leading for 11 years.

THE PHILIPPINES

• Junrey Barbante and Janine Arenas are the victims of bomb detonated during a Eucharistic celebration in the State University of Mindanao, Lanao of Sur. Province. They were two Catholic students and volunteers belonging to the community of the University’s chaplaincy; they were also involved in leading the liturgies.

PALESTINE:

• Samar Kamal Anton, and her mother, Nahida Khalil Anton, were killed by snipers while walking towards the convent of the sisters of Mother Teresa in Gaza. One was killed while trying to drag the other to a safe place. The two belonged to a group of Catholic and Orthodox women committed to a journey of faith and ministry, especially in favour of the poor and disable.

  IN EUROPE one lay man was killed.

SPAIN

• Diego Valencia, lay man, sacristan of the parish of Nuestra Señora de La Palma, in Algesiras, was killed by a young Moroccan armed with a machete.
