Monterrey è un territorio fortemente industriale nel nord del Messico, attraversato da migranti attratti dal “sogno americano” per via della vicinanza della frontiera con gli Stati Uniti, che dista circa 250 km, ma anche percorso da traffici illeciti, soprattutto droga, portati avanti da organizzazioni criminali spesso in lotta tra loro. È questo il territorio che a partire da ottobre percorrerà a bordo di un furgone la prima cappella itinerante del Santissimo Sacramento, la nuova iniziativa dell’arcidiocesi di Monterrey, nel quadro delle celebrazioni per i suoi 250 anni di fondazione. In queste aree, l’arcivescovo, Rogelio Cabrera López, ha voluto creare delle “missioni” parrocchiali di primo annuncio.

Ad avere l’idea della cappella itinerante, è stata una coppia di laici, convinta della necessità di una presenza eucaristica del Signore ovunque. I due coniugi hanno allestito un “piccolo camion”. L’arcivescovo ha benedetto l’iniziativa. Il piccolo camion, oltre all’ostensorio, offre uno spazio per ospitare un prete, per l’ascolto e la celebrazione del Sacramento della riconciliazione. Sono stati montati un altare, due inginocchiatoi e due sedili. Sarà possibile l’adorazione eucaristica, raccogliersi in preghiera, confessarsi, anche in quei quartieri improvvisati o in realtà del tutto differenti, come ad esempio parchi divertimento, centri ricreativi o centri commerciali, promuovendo al contempo attività missionarie, esperienze di evangelizzazione, visite alle famiglie.

Monterrey is a heavily industrialised region in northern Mexico. Due to its proximity to the US border – some 250 km away –, it is crossed by migrants drawn to the ‘American dream’. But it is also a hub for illicit trafficking - particularly drugs – carried out by criminal organisations that are often at war with each other. It is through this region that, from October onwards, the first travelling chapel of the Blessed Sacrament will travel in a van. This is a new initiative by the Archdiocese of Monterrey, part of the celebrations marking the 250^th anniversary of its foundation. In these areas, the Archbishop, Rogelio Cabrera López, has sought to establish parish ‘missions’ dedicated to the first proclamation of the Gospel.

The idea for the travelling chapel came from a lay couple, convinced of the need for the Lord’s Eucharistic presence everywhere. The couple fitted out a ‘small van’, and the archbishop blessed the initiative. In addition to the monstrance, the small van provides space to accommodate a priest for hearing confessions and celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. An altar, two kneelers and two seats have been installed. It will be possible to hold the Eucharistic adoration, gather in prayer and go to confession, even in makeshift neighbourhoods or in completely different settings, such as amusement parks, leisure centres or shopping centres, whilst at the same time promoting missionary activities, evangelisation initiatives and visits to families.
