Mercoledì 17 giugno 2026 è iniziato nella Casa Madre, Parma, il Convegno internazionale dedicato al Volto Umano del Saveriano. Per dieci giorni la Famiglia saveriana si fermerà a riflettere, pregare e camminare insieme attorno a una delle cinque costanti che danno forma alla sua identità e alla sua spiritualità. A prendere parte all'evento sono trentasette partecipanti, tra cui tutti e cinque i membri della Direzione Generale, rappresentanti delle Circoscrizioni dei ventuno Paesi in cui i Saveriani sono presenti, due sorelle Saveriane e, nei prossimi giorni, anche un rappresentante del laicato Saveriano e un amico dell'Istituto.

Come ha osservato il Superiore Generale nel suo discorso di apertura, la composizione dell'assemblea dice molto dell'Istituto oggi: una comunità prevalentemente giovane, che porta nel cuore i colori, le lingue e le fatiche di quattro continenti — Asia, Africa, America ed Europa. Un volto profondamente interculturale e intergenerazionale.

Il Convegno arriva al termine di un percorso accidentato. Pensato inizialmente per il 2018, era stato rinviato al 2022 a seguito della Pasqua del compianto p. Luigi Menegazzo nel 2016 e della celebrazione del XVII Capitolo Generale nel 2017; la pandemia di COVID ne aveva poi imposto la cancellazione. In quest’estate del 2026, fedele alla programmazione del sessennio 2023-2029 che ha posto la Formazione Permanente tra le priorità assolute, l'Istituto può finalmente celebrare questo Convegno.

Dopo i Convegni dedicati alla Spiritualità (2006) e alla Missione (2012), lo sguardo si posa ora sull'umanità del saveriano. Il riferimento è al carisma del Fondatore, san Guido Maria Conforti, che desiderava per i suoi missionari una “umanità ricca ed equilibrata”. Il tema si intreccia con quello dell'interculturalità, indicato dal XVIII Capitolo Generale non come un problema da gestire, ma come un valore per la missione. Significativo, in questa prospettiva, anche il richiamo al recente magistero di Papa Leone XIV e all'enciclica Magnifica Humanitas, che ricorda la dignità radicale e incalcolabile di ogni essere umano, immagine di Dio al di là di ciò che produce.

“L'orizzonte di questo Convegno è grande e bello: è l'orizzonte stesso di Dio” — sono le parole con cui il Superiore Generale ha consegnato all'assemblea il senso di questi giorni, descritti come un cantiere sempre aperto e urgente, guidato dallo Spirito. Un invito, rivolto a tutti i confratelli e all'intera Famiglia religiosa e missionaria, a custodire con amore quella “magnifica umanità” mostrata nella sua pienezza in Cristo.

On Wednesday 17 June 2026, the international conference dedicated to the Human Traits of the Xaverian began at the Mother House in Parma. For ten days, the Xaverian Family will be reflecting, praying and sharing together on one of the five constants that shape the identity and spirituality of the Xaverian.

Thirty-seven participants are taking part in the event, including all five members of the General Direction, representatives from the Circumscriptions of the twenty-one countries where the Xaverians are present, two Missionaries of Mary - Xaverian Sisters and, in the coming days, a representative of the Xaverian laity and a friend of the Institute.

As the Superior General observed in his opening address, the composition of the assembly speaks clearly about the Institute today: a predominantly young community, which carries in its heart the colours, languages and struggles of four continents — Asia, Africa, America and Europe. A profoundly intercultural and intergenerational face.

The Conference comes at the end of a difficult journey. Originally planned for 2018, it had been postponed to 2022 following the death of the late Fr Luigi Menegazzo in 2016 and the celebration of the 17th General Chapter in 2017; the COVID-19 pandemic then forced its cancellation. This summer of 2026, in line with the six-year plan for 2023–2029, which has made Ongoing Formation one of its top priorities, the Institute is finally able to hold this conference.

Following the Conferences devoted to Spirituality (2006) and Mission (2012), attention now turns to the humanity of the Xaverian. The reference is to the charism of the Founder, Saint Guido Maria Conforti, who desired for his missionaries a ‘rich and balanced humanity’. This theme is intertwined with that of interculturality, identified by the 18th General Chapter not as a problem to be managed, but as a value for the mission. Significant, in this regard, is also the reference to the recent teaching of Pope Leo XIV and to the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, which recalls the fundamental and immeasurable dignity of every human being, made in the image of God, regardless of what they produce.

“The horizon of this Conference is vast and beautiful: it is God’s own horizon” — these were the words with which the Superior General conveyed to the assembly the meaning of these days, described as an ever-open and urgent work in progress, guided by the Spirit. An invitation, addressed to all the brothers and to the entire religious and missionary Family, to cherish with love that ‘magnificent humanity’ revealed in its fullness in Christ.
