Sono arrivato in Italia lo scorso giugno per partecipare al Congresso sul “Volto umano del Saveriano” e all’Incontro dei formatori e dei responsabili delle case di formazione della nostra Congregazione. Al termine del primo evento e in attesa dell’inizio del secondo, mi sono iscritto a un corso intensivo di lingua italiana offerto dalla Società Dante Alighieri in collaborazione con la Pontificia Università Urbaniana di Roma. Eravamo in totale 150 studenti (sacerdoti, suore e seminaristi) provenienti da 35 nazionalità diverse e da tre continenti (Africa, America e Asia). Nonostante il caldo torrido dell’estate, i due mesi dedicati all’apprendimento dell’italiano ci hanno permesso di vivere una meravigliosa esperienza di universalità della Chiesa cattolica e di interculturalità, imparando gli uni dagli altri e arricchendoci grazie alle nostre differenze culturali. 

All’Urbaniana non abbiamo imparato solo la lingua, ma anche molto sulla storia e la cultura italiana, in particolare qui a Roma, nonché sulla vita della Chiesa e su alcune delle attuali sfide pastorali in Italia. Al termine di questo programma di formazione, la maggior parte dei miei compagni proseguirà gli studi accademici presso le varie università pontificie di Roma. Da parte mia, mi sto preparando a tornare a casa arricchito da questa esperienza, per continuare la mia missione. 

Ringrazio la Congregazione che mi ha offerto questo periodo di formazione permanente attraverso lo studio della lingua del nostro Fondatore. Ringrazio inoltre tutti i nostri professori che hanno sciolto le nostre lingue e aperto le nostre orecchie affinché potessimo cominciare ad ascoltare e a parlare delle meraviglie di Dio in… italiano (cfr. I arrived in Italy last June to participate in the Congress on the Human Traits of the Xaverian and to take part in the meeting of formators and heads of formation houses in our Congregation. After the conclusion of the first event and while awaiting the start of the second, I enrolled in an intensive Italian language course offered by the Dante Alighieri Society in collaboration with the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. We were a total of 150 students (priests, religious sisters, and seminarians) from 35 different nationalities and three continents (Africa, America, and Asia). Despite the extreme summer heat, the two months of learning Italian allowed us to have a wonderful experience of the universality of the Catholic Church and interculturality, learning from one another and enriching ourselves with our cultural differences. At the Urbaniana, we not only learned the language but also a great deal about Italian history and culture, particularly here in Rome, as well as about the life of the Church and some of the current pastoral challenges in Italy. As we conclude this formation program, most of my companions will continue their academic studies at the various pontifical universities in Rome. For my part, I am preparing to return home enriched by this experience, to continue my mission. I thank the Congregation that gave me this time of ongoing formation through the study of the language of our founder. Furthermore, I also thank all our professors who loosened our tongues and opened our ears so that we could begin to hear and speak of God's wonders in… Italian (cf. Acts 2:7-8).
