In questo momento particolare della vita della Chiesa - la morte di papa Francesco e l’anno della celebrazione del Giubileo “Pellegrini di Speranza” - il XVII Capitolo Regionale ha avuto luogo a San Pietro in Vincoli dal 22 aprile al 3 maggio 2025. ‘Comunità ad Gentes - Testimoni di trasformazione’, ispirati dall’icona di Emmaus, proposta dalla Direzione Generale nel suo ritiro di apertura del Capitolo.

Tre sono stati gli assi portanti della riflessione: il volto dei saveriani oggi in Italia, la loro missione e strutture e servizio dell’autorità. Siamo stati motivati in questa scelta dall’esauriente Relazione della Direzione Regionale, e dagli interventi dei laici saveriani, Serena Rolandi e Alberto Chiàppari, di p. Alex Brai sul tema del volontariato saveriano e di p. Rolando Ruiz Durán sul progetto di Circoscrizione saveriana europea. In un clima sereno, costruttivo e di ascolto reciproco, abbiamo elaborato un progetto missionario per i prossimi anni, e scelto la nuova direzione regionale. Cultura missionaria vocazionale, cultura saveriana, nuove mappature, cura degli anziani e malati, economia, strutture e servizio dell’autorità in Regione e nelle comunità sono stati oggetto di un largo scambio e di discernimento sia in assemblea che nelle commissioni.

Nell’ultimo giorno il Superiore Regionale, Mons. Natale Paganelli, commentando le letture liturgiche, ci ha ricordato che la speranza non delude, come è avvenuto a quel ragazzo che nella mancanza di mezzi ha dato i suoi cinque pani e due pesci sufficienti per tutta una folla (Gv 6,1-15). Anche Gamaliele (At 5,34-42) ci ha assicurati che se il nostro progetto viene da Dio, porterà frutti e saranno duraturi.

Il Capitolo è stato motivo di speranza: andiamo infatti verso degli obiettivi comuni, una luce per noi tutti. L’abbiamo vissuto nella serenità e vorremmo trasmetterla a tutte le comunità in regione.

Da una nuova presa di coscienza che l’Italia è veramente paese di missione ad gentes, traiamo uno slancio nuovo a portare avanti con gioia, tutti insieme – veramente TUTTI insieme, qualunque sia la nostra condizione fisica – questa missione espressa dal Progetto Missionario Regionale, fiduciosi nello Spirito protagonista della missione.

Con gratitudine verso la Direzione Regionale uscente, la DG che ci ha accompagnati, e la comunità che ci ha accolti molto fraternamente, assicuriamo alla nuova équipe la sincera collaborazione di tutte le comunità d’Italia, nella comunione di Cristo missionario del Padre. I Capitolari

“At this particular moment in the life of the Church – consider the death of Pope Francis and the celebration of the Jubilee ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ – the 17^th Regional Chapter took place in San Pietro in Vincoli from April 22^nd to May 3^rd, 2025. Communities ad Gentes - Witnesses of Transformation’, inspired by the icon of Emmaus, proposed by the General Directorate in its opening retreat for the Chapter.

The reflection of the Chapter focused on three main issues: today’s situation of the Xaverians in Italy; their missions; and the structures and service of authority. The motive behind our choice to discuss these issues was given by the very comprehensive Report of the Regional Direction, by the contributions of the Lay Xaverians, Serena Rolandi and Alberto Chiàppari, and by the speeches of Fr. Alex Brai on the issue of Xaverian volunteers and Fr. Rolando Ruiz Durán on the project of a European Xaverian Circumscription. In a serene, constructive and mutually listening atmosphere, we drew up a missionary project for the coming years, and selected the new Regional Council. The topics of the promotion of the missionary vocation (cultura missionaria vocazionale), Xaverian spirituality (cultura saveriana), new mappings, care for the elderly and sick, finances, and the structure and service of authority at the Regional level and in the local communities have been discussed and eavlutaed both by the general assembly and by the committees.

On the last day, the Regional Superior, Msgr. Natale Paganelli, while commenting readings from the liturgy, reminded us of the hope which does not disappoint, as in the case of that boy who, despite not having sufficient means, gave his five loaves of bread and two fish, and these were sufficient for an entire crowd (John 6: 1-15). Also Gamaliel (Acts 5: 34-42) reassures us that, if our project comes from God, it will bear fruits which will last.  

The Chapter has given us reason for hope, as we are now moving towards common objectives with new light. We lived the Chapter in serenity, and this same serenity we would like to pass on to all the communities of the region.

The awareness that Italy is really a country of mission ad gentes and the trust in the Spirit, who is the protagonist of mission, give us new drive in carrying out together – ALL together, whatever our physical condition – the commitments expressed in the Progetto Missionario Regionale.

We are grateful to the former Regional Council, to the GD that accompanied us, and to the local community that fraternally hosted us during the Chapter.
