Sabato 24 maggio, si celebra la Giornata mondiale di preghiera per la Chiesa in Cina:  “Sostieni l’impegno di quanti in Cina, tra le quotidiane fatiche, continuano a credere, a sperare, ad amare, affinché mai temano di parlare di Gesù al mondo e del mondo a Gesù”.

Anche questo chiede a Maria - “Aiuto dei cristiani” 進教之佑 – JìnJiàoZhīYòu- la preghiera scritta da Papa Benedetto XVI come invocazione orante per celebrare la prima Giornata Mondiale di preghiera per la Chiesa in Cina (24 maggio 2008).

La memoria liturgica della Beata Vergine Maria - Aiuto dei Cristiani - venerata nel santuario mariano di Sheshan a Shanghai è diventata, grazie a papa Benedetto XVI, occasione per i cattolici di tutto il mondo di unirsi in preghiera con la Chiesa che è in Cina.

L’intuizione di papa Ratzinger di far coincidere la Giornata di preghiera per la Chiesa in Cina con la festa del santuario di Sheshan rimanda a un luogo caro e familiare per tanti cattolici cinesi. Un luogo che ha a che fare con le prove e le consolazioni di cui è intessuto il loro cammino nella storia.

Anche in anni più recenti, Nostra Signora di Sheshan ha accarezzato le attese, le sofferenze e le ripartenze della Chiesa cattolica in Cina. Nella statua di bronzo che svetta sulla torre campanaria, Maria si presenta in una postura singolare, mentre solleva sopra la propria testa Gesù Bambino, nell’atto di donarLo a tutti.

Una preghiera anche per i nostri compagni provenienti da quella nazione, per i nostri compagni che vi lavorano e per gli amici e benefattori.

Saturday, May 24^th, marks the World Day of Prayer for the Church in China: “Sustain all those in China, who, amid their daily trials, continue to believe, to hope, to love. May they never be afraid to speak of Jesus to the world, and of the world to Jesus.” This is part of what the prayer composed by Pope Benedict XVI to celebrate the first World Day of Prayer for the Church in China (May 24^th, 2008) asks Mary – “Help of Christians” (進教之佑 – Jìn Jiào Zhī Yòu). Thanks to Pope Benedict XVI, the liturgical memory of the Blessed Vergin Mary, “Help of Christians”, venerated at the Sheshan Marian Shrine in Shanghai, has become the occasion for Catholic the world over to unite in prayer for the Church in China.

Pope Ratzinger’s goal was to associate the Day of Prayer for the Church in China with the feast at Sheshan Shrine – a place very dear and familiar to many Chinese Catholics; indeed, the Shrine is deeply linked to the trials and consolations that permeate their journey through history.

Also in more recent years, Our Lady of Sheshan has cared for the expectations, sufferings and new beginnings of the Catholic Church in China. The bronze statue towering on the top of the Shrine’s belfry depicts Mary in a unique posture: she raises up the Child Jesus over her head in the act of giving Him to all.

As we pray for the Chinese Church, let us also pray for our companions that come from China, for our companions that are working there and for our Chinese friends and benefactors.
