Vivere dal vivo la visita di Papa Leone XIV in Africa è stato un dono grande. Come missionaria Saveriana, trovandomi a Douala, (città motore economico e demografico del Camerun), ho avuto l’immensa gioia di partecipare, lo scorso 17 aprile, alla Messa pontificale celebrata sulla spianata dello stadio di Japoma. Impossibile non esserci: la nostra comunità dista appena una decina chilometri dallo stadio! Sento innanzitutto un forte senso di gratitudine verso il Signore per aver potuto condividere con il popolo camerunese questo straordinario evento storico, avvenuto in un contesto sociopolitico particolarmente travagliato. Dove, tuttavia, la popolazione non cessa di testimoniare la sua fede viva, impregnata di preghiera e di gioiosa speranza. Il passaggio del Papa a Douala è durato solo poche ore, ma ha lasciato una traccia indelebile nel cuore della gente. A giorni di distanza, la commozione resta ancora palpabile. Anche chi non è molto avvezzo alle cose di Chiesa si dice fiero e onorato che una personalità così speciale abbia scelto di venire in Camerun. Il suo coraggioso messaggio di pace, i forti appelli rivolti ai governanti, l’incoraggiamento ai giovani, i consolanti segni di benedizione impartiti a tutti amorevolmente, la scelta di visitare, lontano dai riflettori, un piccolo ospedale nella periferia della città, nonché i luminosi gesti da lui compiuti lungo tutto il viaggio africano, sono stati per noi di grande conforto. Come un soave balsamo versato sulle ferite di chi soffre, la visita papale aiuterà a credere che la situazione attuale può cambiare. Commentando l’omelia del Papa a Japoma, una mamma ha detto: “La Parola seminata nella nostra terra porterà frutto, perché se si semina, la terra non inganna, non inganna mai!”. Experiencing first-hand Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Africa was a great gift. As a Xaverian sister Missionary of Mary, based in Douala (Cameroon’s economic and demographic hub), I had the immense joy of attending, on April 17, the papal Mass celebrated on the esplanade of the Japoma stadium. It was impossible not to be there: our community is just ten kilometres from the stadium! First and foremost, I feel a deep sense of gratitude to the Lord for having been able to share this extraordinary historical event with the Cameroonian people, which took place against a particularly troubled socio-political background. Yet here, the people never cease to bear witness to their living faith, imbued with prayer and joyful hope. The Pope’s visit to Douala lasted only a few hours, but it left an indelible mark on people’s hearts. Days later, the emotion is still palpable. Even those who are not particularly accustomed to Church matters say they are proud and honoured that such a special figure chose to come to Cameroon.

His courageous message of peace, his strong appeals to those in power, his words of encouragement to young people, the comforting signs of blessing he bestowed on everyone with such love, his decision to visit, away from the spotlight, a small hospital on the outskirts of the city, as well as the inspiring gestures he made throughout his African tour, have been a great source of comfort to us. Like a soothing balm poured onto the wounds of those who suffer, the papal visit will help us believe that the current situation can change.
