“La Vita Cattolica”, Settimanale del Friuli, del 21 maggio 2025, riporta una breve intervista al nostro confratello p. Joe Matteucig (membro della comunità Saveriana di Taipei, Taiwan).

P. Joe Matteucig sx era al sud di Taiwan per un ritiro con il gruppo di Pastorale Sanitaria dell’Ospedale Cattolico Cardinal Tian, quando ha sentito la notizia che il Cardinale Robert Francis Prevost era stato eletto nuovo papa: Leone XIV… La sua reazione è stata immediata. “Bob Prevost? Lo ricordo. Abbiamo studiato insieme nel CTU di Chicago (Catholic Theological Union). Sorpresa e gioia nello scoprire che il nuovo papa Leone XIV non solo aveva studiato nello stesso centro teologico, ma che era stato compagno di classe dei confratelli Giuliano Perozzi e Dario Maso…  Mentre p. Giuseppe e P. Marco Marangone hanno terminato gli studi due anni dopo (1984), i pp. Giuliano e Dario hanno ottenuto il Master in Divinity nello stesso anno del futuro Papa (1982)”. P. Giuseppe pur non avendo frequentato gli stessi corsi del futuro papa, lo ricorda, ma il suo ricordo è molto superficiale (incontrato sporadicamente nei corridoi, oppure saltuariamente durante qualche attività). Infatti, i Saveriani seguivano i corsi scolastici, ma poi terminate le ore di scuola tornavano a casa loro. Il CTU è un centro teologico che integra accademia e pastorale missionaria. Per questo è stato interessante sentire il richiamo di Papa Leone XIV che ha ricordato che, anche frutto degli studi e degli anni passati in Perù, la Chiesa deve essere missionaria. Papa Leone XIV, una persona umile, che si presenta con tanta serenità… sa che è strumento nelle mani di Dio, sotto la guida dello Spirito Santo… Proprio un regalo incredibile ricevuto durante questo Giubileo della Speranza…

Fr. Joe Matteucig s.x. was in southern Taiwan on a retreat with the Pastoral Health Care group of Cardinal Tien Catholic Hospital when he heard that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected Pope: Leo XIV... His reaction was immediate. "Bob Prevost? I remember him. We studied together at CTU (Catholic Theological Union) in Chicago. Surprise and joy to find out that the new Pope, Leo XIV, had not only studied at the same theological centre but also had been a classmate of two more Xaverians: Julian Perozzi and Dario Maso... While Fr. Joe and Fr. Mark Marangone had finished their studies two years later (1984), Frs. Julian and Dario got their Master in Divinity the same year as the new Pope (1982)”. While not attending the same course, Fr. Joe remembers the future Pope but met him sporadically in the corridors or occasionally during some activity. Interaction with other students was rare, except among those who followed the same courses. Generally speaking, the Xaverians attended school courses, but they returned to their homes after school hours. CTU is a theological centre that integrates academia and missionary pastoral engagement. That is why it was interesting to hear Pope Leo XIV's reminder that, connected to his studies and more so with his many years in Peru, the Church needs to keep alive her missionary spirit. Pope Leo XIV, a humble person, presents himself with such serenity. He knows that he is an instrument in God's hands and is under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. What an incredible gift we all received during this Jubilee Year.
