TAIPEI – TAIWAN: THE CONSECRATORY FORMULA

A short article written by our confrere Fr. Fabrizio Tosolini sx has recently been published in “Rivista Biblica” (Year LXIX - Nn. 3-4 July-September 2021, October-December 2021), accessible online:  https://www.dehoniane.it/rivista-biblica-online
It is a question of how to translate the last sentence of the formula of the Eucharistic consecration. Many translations, including the Italian one, are wrong, because Greek and Latin have a possessive adjective ("my 'memorial, the memorial that belongs to me"), not a pronoun ("of me") with the inevitable consequence that Jesus becomes just the object of our remembrance, like any great man of the past. Jesus is not asking that we remember him, but that we put into action 'his memorial', the set of actions gesture that 'makes us remember.' It is therefore not a question of 'recalling Jesus', but of being pervaded, when we celebrate the Eucharist ("do this") by his intention, so as to become the visibility of his paschal mystery.

This Note is important for those who translate liturgical texts, and for those who explain them. It can be made known to the various liturgical commissions in charge of translations, to grasp the depth of the mystery that we celebrate, by which we are celebrated ("In order not to be broken up, eat this bond of unity; so as not to demean yourselves, drink the price of your ransom: for you are now members of Christ").
