Il 18 aprile 2024, papa Francesco, incontrando le Superiore e le Delegate delle Carmelitane Scalze, ha sottolineato alcuni punti essenziali per un cammino di  rinnovamento del carisma carmelitano. Parlando, infatti, del “dinamismo della contemplazione”, il papa afferma che esso è sempre un dinamismo d’amore, non per staccarci dalla terra, ma per farcela abitare in profondità.

“…Avete il compito di trovare nuovi linguaggi, nuove vie e nuovi strumenti per dare ancora maggiore slancio alla vita contemplativa che il Signore vi ha chiamato ad abbracciare, perché il carisma si conservi — il carisma è lo stesso — e che possa essere compreso e attirare tanti cuori, per la gloria di Dio e per il bene della Chiesa. Quando un Carmelo funziona bene attira, attira, non è vero? È come la luce con le mosche, attira, attira…”. “…saper fare qualche scelta audace e rischiosa anche se sul momento rimane ignota la meta verso cui ci condurrà. Significa non affidarci soltanto alle strategie umane, alle strategie difensive quando si tratta di riflettere su un monastero da salvare o da lasciare, sulle forme della vita comunitaria, sulle vocazioni. Le strategie difensive sono frutto di un nostalgico ritorno al passato; questo non funziona, la nostalgia non funziona, la speranza evangelica va in un’altra direzione: ci dona la gioia della storia vissuta fino ad oggi ma ci rende capaci di guardare avanti, con quelle radici che abbiamo ricevuto…”

On April 18^th 2024, in the course of a meeting with the Superiors and Delegates of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, Pope Francis emphasized some essential points for a journey of renewal of the Carmelite charism. Talking about the “path of contemplation”, the Pope stated that it is inherently a path of love, which is not meant to separate us from the world but to ground us more deeply in it.

“You are challenged to discover new language, new ways and new means to give greater impetus to the contemplative life that the Lord has called you to embrace, so that the charism of Carmel may be preserved – the charism which is always the same – and that it may become understood and attract many hearts, for the glory of God and the good of the Church. When a Carmel works well, it attracts, it attracts, doesn't it? It is like light with flies, it attracts, it attracts. (…) Having the courage to make certain bold and risky decisions, even without knowing where they will eventually lead. Above all, it means not thinking only in human and defensive terms when reflecting on whether to preserve or close a monastery, on structures of community life, on vocations. Defensive strategies are often the fruit of a nostalgic longing for the past – that does not work, nostalgia does not work – whereas evangelical hope grants us joy in contemplating our history up to the present, but also empowers us to look ahead to the future with those roots that we have received.”
