P. Alfonso Begheldo

Formatore, animatore e studioso; Missionario in Amazzonia. Di anni 73. Sepolto a Parma
P. Alfonso Begheldo nacque a Vicenza da Antonio e Tardo Italia il 21.VIII.1911. Orfano ben presto del papà e completate le elementari, entrò tra i Saveriani nella Casa di Vicenza il 28.IX.1924. Novizio a Parma dall'agosto 1929 vi emise la Professione di Religioso Missionario Saveriano il 26.VIII.1930 nelle mani del Fondatore assieme ad altri sei Confratelli.
Fu ordinato Sacerdote nella Cattedrale di Parma da Mons. E. Colli nella Festa del S. Cuore il 21.VI.1936. Per tre anni fu insegnante nelle Case di Grumone e Poggio S. Marcello.
Nel 1939 fu richiamato a Parma per essere Redattore della Rivista dell'Istituto "Le Missioni Illustrate".
Chiamato a Roma nel 1942 col compito di Vicesegretario dell'Unione Missionaria del Clero, vi rimase 4 anni dedicandosi all'animazione dell’Unione stessa e completando alcuni studi di Storia delle Missioni, che già aveva iniziato mentre era redattore a Parma. Alcuni suoi articoli sulla storia dell'Opera della Propagazione nel Ducato di Parma vennero stampati sull'Osservatore Romano, mentre una sua dissertazione più ampia sullo stesso argomento è tuttora in attesa di essere stampata.
Quando i Saveriani si orientarono, alla fine della II° Guerra Mondiale per una fondazione negli U.S.A. il P. Begheldo fu scelto assieme al P. Illuminati per rinforzare gli inizi già intrapresi dal P. Enrico Frassinetti. Fu missionario nelle Parrocchie, nella formazione dei giovani studenti saveriani americani e nei molteplici contatti pastorali che le Case Saveriane d'America avevano avviato.
Chi visse accanto a lui durante questo lungo periodo ha scritto:
"P. Begheldo prese sul serio il compito di Maestro dei Novizi e vi dedicò con grande diligenza tutte le sue doti. Lo ricordo come un uomo mite, sereno, profondamente attaccato all'Istituto ed in modo particolare alla figura del Fondatore. ( ... ) Nelle conversazioni era affabile, ilare ed interessante: si facevano con lui anche frequenti e belle risate (...) Quando penso a lui, vedo il suo viso illuminato da quel sorriso caratteristico, ampio con un sottile tocco di ironia - a volte - che gli scopriva tutti i denti e, soprattutto rivelava il suo buon cuore..." "Lo incontrai la prima volta a Petersham nel 1952, nella Casa del Noviziato. Ci accolse con molta cordialità; eravamo appena giunti dall'Italia come neo-professi: con molta pazienza ci introdusse nella vita differente degli Stati Uniti e cercò di darci i consigli necessari per il nuovo ambiente. Mi colpì fin da allora la sua affabilità ( ... ) Al P. Begheldo non mancava il buon umore e sapeva anzi in cantarci con le sue conferenze e le sue prediche ben preparate..." (P. M.Pezzotti).
"Amava tutto ciò che è buono e bello: musica, arte, natura. Era di una semplicità e di una trasparenza quasi infantili. Rimaneva affascinato di tutto..." (P. F. Signorelli).
Finalmente dopo 50 anni di attesa, il desiderio di essere missionario direttamente tra i non cristiani si realizzò. A 65 anni poté andare in Brasile-Amazzonia. Inizialmente vi andò a predicare degli Esercizi ai Confratelli; ritornò definitivamente nell'ottobre 1976. Curò in particolare il ministero delle confessioni.
Il Signore preparava per lui altre vie di evangelizzazione: nella primavera del 1977 un'improvvisa emorragia cerebrale diede l'avvio ad un declino graduale della sua salute già un po' incerta da anni, a causa di un'artrite deformante di cui soffriva. Rientrò in Italia nell'estate 1979 e dopo un lungo e doloroso calvario, spirò nel Signore alle prime ore del 13 giugno 1984. Presiedendo l'Eucaristia funebre il P. Signorelli, già suo novizio negli USA ed ora Vicario dell'Istituto, così lo salutava:
"Grazie P. Alfonso, per il tuo esempio, il tuo amore, la tua fede, il tuo attaccamento alla nostra Famiglia Missionaria. Prega per noi perché siamo fedeli discepoli di Cristo, della Chiesa e di Mons. Conforti."

Fr. Alphonse Begheldo died at the Mother House in Parma on June 13 1984, as a consequence of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 72 years old, born at Vicenza on Aug. 21 1911. Orphan of his father in early childhood, and at the end of grade school, he entered the Xaverians at Vicenza on Sept. 28 1924. He then went to Parma for Novitiate on Aug. 1929 and professed religious vows as Xaverian on Aug. 26 1930 in the hands of our Founder, together with other 6 Xaverians.
He was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Parma by Msgr. E. Colli on the Feast of the Sacred Heart on June 21 1936. Fr. Begheldo taught for three years at Grumone and Poggio S. Marcello. He then was named Director of the Xaverian magazine “Le Missioni Illustrate.”
Fr. Begheldo moved on to Rome in 1942 with the responsibility of vice-secretary of the Missionary Union of the Clergy, where he worked as mission animator of the Union for 4 years, while continuing some studies on the Story of the Missions. Some of his articles on the Works of the Propagation of Parma were reprinted in the Osservatore Romano.
When the Xaverians, at the end of World War II, started the foundation in the USA, Fr. Begheldo was chosen, together with Fr. Illuminati, to strengthen its presence already started by Fr. Henry J. Frassineti. Fr. Begheldo was a missionary in parishes, in the formation of young Xaverian students from the USA, and in the various pastoral works undertaken by the Xaverian houses in the USA. He was rector at Holliston (1949-51), Master of Novices at Petersham (1952-58), Spiritual Director at Franklin (1961-75).
Here are some of the impressions of those who lived with him during this period: “Fr. Begheldo took seriously his service as Novice Master, and put all his efforts and qualities into it. I remember him as a meek and serene man, deeply attached to the Congregation, particularly to the Founder… His talks were dignified, hilarious at times, but interesting, followed by some wholesome laughter, too… When I think of him, I see his face enlightened by that characteristic smile, ample with a touch of irony, at times showing all of his teeth, and especially revealing his true heart…” (Fr. F. Sottocornola) “Fr. Begheldo loved everything that was good and beautiful: music, art, nature. He was simple, transparent, almost childlike. He was in awe with everything…” (Fr. F. Signorelli).
After 50 years of waiting, his call to direct missionary life came true. At 65 years he was assigned to Northern Brazil. In the beginning, he went to give a Provincial Retreat to the confreres, and then he returned definitely in October 1976. He took great care especially in the confessions. The Lord was preparing for him other ways for evangelization: in the Spring of 1977 a sudden cerebral hemorrhage was the beginning of a gradual decline in his health, already in question since his arthritis which he suffered for years. And so he returned to Italy in the summer of 1979, and after a long and painful Calvary, died in the early hours of June 13 1984. At the Funeral Liturgy, Fr. Signorelli, his former Novice and now Vicar General of the Xaverians, greeted Fr. Begheldo in these words: “Thank You, Fr. Alphonse, for your example, your love, your faith, your commitment to our Missionary family. Pray for us, that we may be faithful disciples of Christ, of the Church, and of Msgr. Conforti.”
Fr. Begheldo was one of those people who didn't put himself in front of others. He was one of those people you do not notice when they are alive, but whose absence you feel when they are taken away.
