Il P.Domenico Bello è morto a Parma il 22 gennaio dopo mesi di sofferenze causategli da un tumore. Era nato a Rotaie di Rivello (Potenza) il 20 giugno 1923 ed era entrato nella Casa di Massa Lucana nell'ottobre del 1935. Seguì il curriculum ordinario degli studi; e fu ordinato sacerdote il 16 aprile 1950.
Passò due anni a S . Pietro in Vincoli come economo e quasi due a Cremona come animatore esterno.
Il 23 aprile 1955 partì per il Bangladesh e vi rimase fino al 1963. Durante quel periodo si segnalò per la sua resistenza alla fatica, la sua abilità nelle costruzioni, il suo saper fare con la gente. Fu a Jessore, dove collaborò alla costruzione del Fatima Hospital, a Karpasdanga (1957-58) come rettore della missione dove iniziò la costruzione della Chiesa e, finalmente, a Satkhira (1959-63).
Nel 1964 rientrò in Italia e, dopo un periodo passato in USA per lo studio della lingua, fu destinato alla Scozia come Cappellano degli emigranti italiani. Fu un periodo molto fecondo per lui.
Là poté mostrare la sua delicatezza e premura che lo rendevano amico di tutti. La maggioranza di quegli emigranti proveniva dall'Italia del Sud. P. Bello, meridionale anche lui, era proprio l'uomo per loro: semplice, alla buona, capace di trovarsi bene con tutti, soprattutto con gli anziani e con i più semplici.
Lasciò la Scozia nel 1978 e, dopo un anno di aggiornamento trascorso a Roma, partì per il Brasile il 21 gennaio 1981.
Nel mese di febbraio del 1986 dovette rientrare in Italia perché colpito da un tumore alla vescica. In un primo tempo sembrò trattarsi di una forma benigna e l'operazione cui fu sottoposto portò un'apparente guarigione.
Mentre si preparava a rientrare in Brasile, il male manifestò la sua vera natura e le conseguenze furono devastanti. Dal mese di ottobre in poi fu costretto ad un ricovero continuato all'ospedale e fu colpito da violenti dolori. Fu quello il periodo in cui risaltarono il suo spirito e la sua fede. Seppe soffrire con una rassegnazione ed una accettazione del male che sbalordirono e commossero medici, infermieri e compagni di malattia.
"Questo sì che salva le anime - egli diceva - altro che le mie prediche!".
Quando il dolore ebbe compiuto la sua preparazione alla visione celeste, il Signore lo chiamò a sé il 22 gennaio 1987. Dopo le esequie celebrate a Parma colla partecipazione di molti confratelli, la salma fu trasportata al suo paese natale.

Fr. Domenico Bello died in Parma, Jan. 22 1987, after months of sufferings caused by a tumor. He was 63 years old, born at Rotale di Rivello (Potenza) on June 20 1923.
He entered our Apostolic School of Massa Lucana in Oct. 1935 and followed the ordinary curriculum vitae of the time: Junion High at Massa, High School at Grumone, Novitiate and First Profession at San Pietro in Vincoli on Sept. 8 1943.
After the Ordination to the Priesthood on April 16 1950, he served as a Treasurer at S. Pietro in Vincoli for two years, and then, for another two years, in Cremona as Mission Animator.
On April 23 1955 he left for his first mission assignment to Bangladesh, and there he served the Lord up to 1963. During this period he shone for his endurance to stress, his ability at building constructions, and his “savoir faire” in human relationships. At Jessore he helped in the construction of the Fatima Hospital; at Karpasdanga (1957-58), as Rector of the mission, he began the construction of the Church. From 1959 to 1963 he served at Satkhira.
In 1964 he returned to Italy. After spending some time in the USA to learn English, he was assigned to Scotland, as Chaplain to the Italian immigrants. It was a fruitful period of his life. There again, he showed his talent at human relationships with his tact, finesse and concern which endeared him to all who came in contact with him. Most of those immigrants were from Southern Italy, and Fr. Bello, a Southerner himself, was the right person in the right place: guileless, plain, at ease with everyone, particularly with the elderly and the simplest people.
He left Scotland in 1978 and spent one year for Aggiornamento in Rome. Then, on Jan. 21 1981 he departed for his second mission assignment, this time to Southern Brazil. After acquiring the language, he served at Dionisio (MG), first as Assistant, then as parish pastor.
In February of 1986 he was forced to return to Italy on account of a tumor in the bladder. It was first thought to be a benign tumor, and also the surgical intervention to remove it seemed to yield good results. Just as he was preparing to return to Brazil, in the summer of 1986, unexpectedly new symptoms revealed the true nature of the ailment with a consequent traumatic experience. In October he became bedridden and forced to the hospital by racking and sharp pains. This was the time when his spirit and his faith shone the most. He was able to accept his ordeal with such a Christian sense of resignation as to astound and move doctors, nurses and fellow patients. “This will really save souls, never mind my sermons!” he used to say. When his torment had him ready for the purity of Heaven, the Lord called him home on Jan. 22 1987.
The funeral service began in Parma at the Mother House with the attendance of many confreres, and ended at his native town of Rotale di Rivello where his body was laid to rest.
