Il p. Rinaldo, nato nel 1928, entrò nella scuola apostolica di Massa Lucana nel 1940. Già da studente si distingueva per lo spirito di dedizione e sacrificio a favore degli altri.
Era convinto della sua vocazione. Al maestro dei novizi che, per celia, lo invitava a tornare a casa perché senza vocazione, rispondeva: "Se me lo dice in nome di Dio, accetto; se no, non mi tiro indietro".
Ordinato sacerdote nel 1954, lavorò a Desio come insegnante e in Scozia tra gli immigrati italiani.
Nel 1961 si trovò nel Bangladesh. L'urto con la realtà di quel paese mise in crisi i suoi romantici entusiasmi. S'accorse che miseria e fame intaccavano la vita di quella gente. Invidia, menzogna, furto diventavano espedienti per sopravvivere. A Satkhira tra i Muci, gente fuori casta e disprezzati da tutti come esseri subumani, si domandò: "Cosa faccio qui? Questa gente non è fatta per il Vangelo. Solo se diventano uomini pos-sono divenire cristiani".
Superò lo scoraggiamento e si buttò nel lavoro servendosi di scuole e cooperative, strumenti già collaudati dai missionari. Ed ecco i primi frutti: scolaretti che lavorano per guadagnarsi i libri di scuola, e adulti che pensano di aiutare i più poveri.
Nel 1967 fu richiamato in Europa e lavorò in Scozia e in Italia.
Dieci anni dopo riprese il suo posto in Bangladesh, ma ecco nel 197 il primo infarto. Da allora non fu più quello di prima. Fu nominato direttore spirituale nel seminario minore di Dacca. Il contatto con i seminaristi locali lo convinse ch'era ormai tempo di pensare alla formazione di saveriani bengalesi. Ma il progetto sembrò prematuro ai confratelli.
Lasciò il Bangladesh nel 1987. In scozia trovò un mondo cambiato e non riuscì ad accettare le nuove esigenze nel campo educativo. Tornò in Italia e s'impegnò nell'animazione missionaria. Ma un nuovo grave infarto lo colse a Tavernerio il 10 novembre 1990. I medici giudicarono necessario applicargli due "by-pass". Lui non si faceva illusioni e diceva scherzando: "E se mi svegliassi dall'altra parte?".
All'ospedale di Bergamo l'operazione riuscì, ma poi il cuore rifiutò di rimettersi in moto.
Il p. Rinaldo si trovò dall’altra parte, accolto da Uno che non si sbaglia nel valutare i meriti di chi lo ama.

Fr. Rinaldo Bernacchi died at the hospital in Bergamo on Jan. 24 1991, following a by-pass surgery after having suffered two heart attacks. He was 62 years old, born on May 18 1928 at Tramutola (Potenza).
He entered the apostolic school of Massa Lucana in 1940 and professed religious missionary vows at S. Pietro in Vincoli on Sept. 8 1945. As a student he distinguished himself for his dedication and sacrifices for others. During the novitiate year, he recounted the episode of the Novice Master who invited him to reconsider his missionary vocation, by going home. His reply was: “If it is in the name of God you invite me to leave the congregation, I accept. But if not, I will not pull back and quit.”
Fr. Rinaldo was ordained priest on Oct. 3 1954, and soon after worked at Desio as a professor, and in Scotland as chaplain of Italian immigrants.
In 1961 he departed for Bangladesh, and this became a difficult period for Fr. Rinaldo, mainly because of the misery and famine ever-present among the people he served. This situation dampened his enthusiasm and dreams. His people were surviving on jealousies, falsehood, and stealing. Among the Muci in Satkhira, among the people considered subhuman, Fr. Rinaldo asked: “What am I doing here? In order for these people to accept the Gospel, they need to be considered human beings first of all, and afterward they will accept Christianity.”
Learning from other missionaries in Bangladesh, he established schools and cooperatives, and thus overcame his personal discouragement. The first fruits were meager, but significant: school children, through their creativity, earned enough money to buy schoolbooks, and adults reached out to poor families.
Fr. Rinaldo came back to Europe in 1967, and worked in Scotland and Italy for about 10 years. But he returned to Bangladesh in 1977, where in 1979 suffered his first heart attack. It was an experience that changed his ways and his life. He was not the same. He was named spiritual director of the minor seminary at Dakka, which helped him develop the idea that the Xaverians should start opening their horizons to future Bangladeshi vocations. This project seemed too idealistic for most of the confreres at that time.
Fr. Rinaldo returned definitely in Scotland in 1987, where he found changed attitudes and motivations, and found it difficult to accept the new needs in the formation field. In Italy he worked in missionary animation, but a second heart attack occurred while in Tavernerio on Nov. 10 1990. Doctors advised him to undergo a by-pass surgery, and Fr. Rinaldo jokingly replied: “What if I wake up on the other side?” The operation took place at Bergamo’s hospital, and it seemed successful… but his heart never came back, and Fr. Rinaldo found himself “on the other side” contemplating the glories and merits of the faithful departed.
