John Henry Cassidy, nato a Musselburgh (Lanark) il 15.VII.l921, fu il primo scozzese ad entrare nell’Istituto Saveriano: vi giunse dopo aver duramente lavorato e sofferto nella sua prima giovinezza, specie nel periodo bellico.
Entrato a 27 anni nella Casa Saveriana di Glasgow, compì l’anno di Noviziato a S. Pietro in Vincoli (RA) emettendo la Professione Religiosa il 3-XII-1949. Completati gli studi teologici a Piacenza, venne ordinato Sacerdote il 17.III.1956.
Già prima della Professione aveva chiesto: "Mi permetto esprimere il mio desiderio: essere inviato, a suo tempo, in Giappone, per continuare l’apostolato di S. Francesco Saverio, secondo l’intenzione di Mons. Conforti".
A causa della lingua inglese che egli conosceva e per le sue condizioni di salute che consigliavano un clima caldo, fu inviato in Sierra Leone nell’agosto 1957: fu una parentesi molto breve, perché il suo fisico mal sopportava le asprezze del clima.
Lavorò quindi per sei anni nella Casa Saveriana di Coatbridge in Scozia, partendo poi nel gennaio 1964 per il Brasile.
Sbarcato in Brasile, fu nominato Vicario Cooperatore nella Parrocchia di Jaguapità; e, dopo una parentesi negli Stati Uniti, fu in aiuto al P. Milani in Santa Gentrudes per passare l’ultimo anno poi nel Seminario di Jaguapità. Ci stava volentieri in questo ambiente sereno. Purtroppo lo tormentava l’asma bronchiale, che da 15 anni sopportava. I Confratelli lo seguivano con trepidazione e li edificava la pazienza con la quale egli superava le crisi che ultimamente si erario fatte più acute. Quando riusciva a stare bene, era veramente ammirabile, allegro e servizievole con tutti.
Negli ultimi giorni si era notata in lui una grande calma. Passava lunghe ore in Chiesa, specialmente nelle ore pomeridiane recitando il breviario e facendo la Via Crucis. La vigilia della sua morte fu un giorno normale per lui: cenò come il solito e passò la serata in compagnia dei Confratelli.
Morì nella mattinata del 25.II.l967 per enfisema polmonare, aggravato da scompenso cardiaco a Jaguapità.

Fr. John Henry Cassidy died at our community in Jaguapità (Paranà – Brazil) on Feb. 25 1967, for lung emphysema from chronic bronchial asthma. He was 45 years old, born at Musselburgh (Lanarkshire – Scotland) on July 15 1921.
He entered the Xaverians at Glasgow on June 1 1948, when he was 27 years old, after years of painful work and sufferings caused by World War II. He then proceeded into Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli where he professed Religious vows on Dec. 3 1949. In his presentation to the Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli, Fr. Luigi Ferrari from Glasgow wrote: “In the last few months we spent together, together with my confreres, John Cassidy has been an edifying example… My only wish is to see him soon sharing the work with us in Christ’s vineyard.” At the end of his theology studies at Piacenza, he was ordained priest on March 17 1956.
Before his religious profession, he wrote to the Superior General: “Allow me to express my desire to be sent, in due time, to Japan, in order to continue the apostolic ministry of St. Francis Xavier, according to the intentions of Bishop Conforti.”
Unfortunately his health conditions did not allow him to be assigned to Japan, but instead he was sent to Sierra Leone in Aug. 1957. Because of the heat and the climate there, his mission experience lasted only a few months.
Fr. Cassidy went back to Scotland, and worked at the Xaverian house in Coatbridge, helping in vocation and mission animation, and the formation of students there, for about 6 years.
He received a new assignment to Brazil on Dec. 27 1963, where he spent the rest of his short life. He was named assistant priest at Jaguapità, and at Santa Gentrudes with Fr. Milani. He also spent a few months in the USA, and then went back to our Seminary at Jaguapità. He was serene in this environment, even when he suffered bronchial asthma, a condition he had the last 15 years of his life. The confreres would follow him closely, dealing with good and bad days: Fr. Cassidy would edify everyone with his patience even in difficult days. He was really admirable, joyful, and service-oriented with everyone.
In his last days, Fr. Cassidy exhorted the gift of personal serenity: he would spend many hours in Church, especially in the afternoons, reciting the breviary and making the Stations of the Cross. His last evening was spent in joyful conversation with his confreres. He died in the morning of Feb. 25 1967 at Jaguapità, of lung emphysema, which affected his heart.
“He is the first Xaverian from Scotland; he is the first Xaverian who dies in the land of Brazil; he is the first priest who is buried at the cemetery of Jaguapità. Already the good people of Brazil bring him flowers, and his tomb will often be our destination.” (Letter of Fr. Rossi) May he rest in Peace.
