Nato a S. Savino di Ripatransone (AP) il 24.IV.1908 da famiglia di contadini, studiò prima nel Seminario Diocesano ed a 21 anni entrò nell'Istituto Saveriano a Parma dove, il 25.XII.1930, emise la Professione Religiosa nelle mani del Fondatore.
Divenuto Sacerdote il 29.X.1933 fu destinato all'insegnamento dei giovani studenti saveriani, prima a Poggio S. Marcello, poi a Vicenza e successivamente nel Liceo interno di Parma e nel Ginnasio superiore di Grumone.
Dal 1941 al 1943, chiamato alle armi, fu Cappellano Militare sulla Linea Serajevo-Mostar poi in Croazia rischiando la deportazione.
Nel marzo 1949, assieme al P. Cavalca ed al Fr. Nocenti, partiva per la Cina, quando colà la situazione era già disperata: venne consigliato di lavorare in Giappone, dove rimase per 5 anni incontrando notevoli difficoltà per la lingua.
Rientrato in Italia nel 1955, rimase di nuovo a Poggio, quindi a Nizza Monferrato come insegnante ai giovani di vocazione adulta ed infine ad Ancona.
Ad Ancona alternò l'insegnamento agli studenti interni con lezioni di ripetizione a domicilio. Fu Cappellano festivo di Collemarino ove si recava con puntualità estrema tutte le domeniche mattina, divenendo caratteristico per la sua metodicità e costanza quando "... alle sei di ogni domenica si sentiva il suo passo pesante sul selciato… ombrello sotto il braccio e basco in testa scendeva la scorciatoia che portava alla stazione e partiva; nella Parrocchia celebrava e confessava..."
Ebbe i primi sintomi del male nel 1973: venne ricoverato all'ospedale e operato di tumore allo stomaco. Tuttavia la malattia continuò il suo cammino cosicché gli ultimi mesi del P. Gaetano furono un autentico purgatorio fino al mattino del 16.VIII.1974, quando la sua giornata terrena si concludeva ed iniziava per lui il giorno senza tramonto.

Fr. Gaetano Cocci Grifoni died at the house of Ancona on August 16 1974, following a chirurgical operation of removal of a stomach tumor. He was 66 years old, born at San Savino di Ripatransone (Ascoli Piceno) on Apr. 24 1908.
After studies at the diocesan seminary of Ripatransone, he entered the Xaverians at Parma when he was 21 years old. In December of 1929 he began his Novitiate, and at the end of that year, he professed religious mission vows in the hands of our Founder on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 1930. On this day, the founder gave him the Constitutions with the following autographed dedication: “It is not enough to profess the evangelical vows, but we need also to live them intensively.”
Fr. Gaetano was ordained a priest on Oct. 29 1933 and was assigned to teach young Xaverian students, first at Poggio S. Marcello, then Vicenza, then Parma and Grumone. From 1941 to 1943 he served as a Military Chaplain in Serajevo-Mostar, and then Croatia. At the end of that experience in March 1949, he went to China together with Fr. Cavalca and Br. Nocenti. But the situation there was not better, and so he went to Japan, where he served for 5 years, even though with many difficulties because of the language. Of his 5 years in Japan, Fr. Gaetano talked only about his work with a group of orphans. It might have been discouraged because of the language, yet he succeeded in following this charitable work, providing for the upkeep of about 60 orphans in Kobe.
Fr. Cocci returned to Italy in 1955, and was at Poggio, at Nizza Monferrato, and at Ancona, holding a teaching service for the Xaverian students. When in Ancona, he also taught privately and was Sunday Chaplain at Collemarino, a ministry he enjoyed with much punctuality and methodology. The parish priest and the Bishop highlighted the gratitude of his faithful service in this parish during the funeral liturgy of Fr. Gaetano.
The first symptoms of a stomach tumor appeared in 1973, and after surgical operations, the disease spread throughout his body. It was a true martyrdom for Fr. Gaetano, until the day of his death on Aug. 16 1974. After his funerals, his body was laid to rest in the cemetery of Ripatransone, in the tomb of his parents.
