"L'Uomo che si tagliò la lingua per Cristo in Cina". Di anni 74. Sepolto a Parma
Nato a Lugo di Romagna (RA) il 25.III.1902 e compiuti gli studi ginnasiali in Seminario, a 17 anni entrò nell'Istituto Saveriano emettendo la Professione religiosa il 1.XI.1921 nelle mani di Mons. Conforti.
Un mese dopo l'Ordinazione Sacerdotale, avvenuta il 28.II.1926, assieme ai Padri Chiarel, Munaretti e Capra partì il 25.III.1926 per la Cina ove rimase ininterrottamente per 26 anni, fino al giorno dell'espulsione, 17.XII.1951. Lavorò nell'Honan Occidentale a Cheng-chow, a Loyang e per 4 anni nell'Ospedale di Tien-tsin come Cappellano.
Chi fu con lui in Cina lo ricorda sereno, entusiasta ed ottimista, di carattere gioioso ed amabile, pronto alla fatica ed al sacrificio: stupiva il suo andare in bicicletta su strade impossibili...
Due fatti segnano in modo originale la sua attività missionaria in Cina: - l'incontro con un'indemoniata che egli liberò dopo un vivace dialogo svolto in romagnolo... e dopo aver usato l'acqua santa; - l'atto eroico di amputarsi la lingua, che egli fece la sera del 16.XI.1951 quando, in prigione, temeva di venir sottoposto ad un'ingiusta tortura e quindi di poter tradire la propria fede. Tale vicenda fu da P. Emaldi stesso narrata in un volume intitolato "L'Uomo che si tagliò la lingua" e ripetuta più e più volte nelle sue successive interessantissime conferenze missionarie.
Ritornato in Italia, fu per dieci anni Confessore in alcune Case Saveriane e propagandista nelle Parrocchie e nei Seminari.
La stessa attività svolse dal 1962 al 1974 nella Provincia Saveriana di Spagna, a Pozuelo de Alaron e a Cortezubi.
Gli ultimi anni di vita li trascorse a Parma presso la Casa Madre dove lasciò grande impressione per la saggezza dei suoi proverbi cinesi e per la frequenza, fedele più degli stessi Studenti, alle lezioni scolastiche dei Corsi di Teologia.
Si addormentò nel Signore il 14.VIII.1976 nella Casa Saveriana di Tavernerio (CO), dove si trovava per un periodo di tranquillità.

Fr. Alfeo Emaldi died at the Xaverian house of Tavernerio (Como) on Aug. 14 1976, due to cardiac arrest. He was 74 years old, born on March 25 1902 at S. Lorenzo in Selva di Lugo di Romagna (Ravenna).
After completing studies at the minor Seminary of the diocese of Imola, he entered the Xaverians at 17 years old, and after the year of Novitiate in Parma, he professed religious mission vows in the hands of Bishop Conforti on Nov. 1 1921.
He was ordained a priest on Feb. 28 1926, and a month later he left for China together with Frs. Chiarel, Munaretti and Capra (Mar. 25 1926). He worked in China for some 26 consecutive years till the day of his expulsion on Dec. 12 1951. He worked in Western Honan at Cheng-chow, at Loyang, and four years at Tien-tsin as hospital Chaplain.
Fr. Emaldi was of serene character, enthusiastic and optimist, ready to face all the challenges of life with a spirit of sacrifice and joy. Two happenings of this period in China are well described in his book “L’uomo che si tagliņ la lingua.” The first is the meeting with a demonic woman who spoke to him in Romagnolo, and was freed from him after lots of holy water. The second heroic event happened during his imprisonment, on Nov. 16 1951, when, under unjust torture from the prison guards, he cut his tongue, as a way of not betraying his Christian faith. These events were part of the story he shared in many mission talks and conferences.
Once in Italy, he was confessor in some Xaverian houses and mission educator in parishes and Seminaries, for about 10 years.
From 1962 to 1974 he followed the same work routine in Spain, in the houses of Pozuelo de Alarcon and at Cortesubi.
His final years of his life were spent at the Mother House in Parma, where he made great impressions on his knowledge of Chinese proverbs, and his frequent attendance at theology courses. During a brief period of relaxation at Tavernerio, he was called Home by the Lord on Aug. 14 1976.
