P. Lorenzo Fantini

Il 20.5.2004, alle ore 11.45 locali, a Zapopan Jal., in Casa Regionale, è morto il P. Lorenzo Fantini. Dal marzo dello scorso anno, quando fu colpito da ictus con emiparesi sinistra, era fraternamente assistito dai confratelli della casa regionale, dagli studenti di filosofia e dal personale domestico.
Aveva quasi 81 anni, essendo nato a Romanengo (CR) il 3.8.1923.
Allievo del seminario di Cremona fino alla quinta ginnasio, entrò tra i Saveriani nel 1939, nella casa di S. Pietro in Vincoli, dove al termine dell’anno di Noviziato emise la Prima Professione (12.9.40). Fu quindi in Casa Madre a Parma per i tre anni di Liceo (40-43) e, dopo il servizio di Prefetto a Poggio S. Marcello (43-44), per i quattro anni di Teologia. Fu ordinato presbitero il 7.3.1948.
Quanto mai positiva la presentazione ai ministeri ordinati: «Intelligenza ottima, intuizione pronta, molto resistente alla fatica intellettuale… Volontà risoluta e costante, buon adattamento alla vita di comunità; pronto al sacrificio, umile; di buono spirito di pietà e di soda formazione spirituale».
Dopo l’ordinazione fu destinato alla casa di Desio, sede da un anno del liceo saveriano. Vi lavorò fino al 1960: furono 12 anni veramente stracolmi di pastorale, giornate missionarie, insegnamento e l’Università Cattolica di Milano, dove nel 1960 conseguì la laurea in Lettere antiche.
Nel gennaio del 1960 ricevette la destinazione alla missione del Bangladesh. In agosto raggiunse Glasgow, in Scozia, per lo studio dell’inglese. Il 30 gennaio 1961 era a Khulna alle prese con il bengalese e dopo sei mesi veniva inviato a Baradal come vice-parroco (1961-1963). Un approccio forse troppo rapido, in un clima, inoltre, risultato micidiale per il P. Lorenzo: il confratello, provato fisicamente e anche psicologicamente, dovette rientrare in Italia (1964).
Ristabilitosi in salute, fece parte della comunità di Desio (65-70), divenuta in quegli anni casa delle Vocazioni adulte e poi anche dei Professi del corso magistrale. P. Lorenzo fu impegnato nel ministero e nell’insegnamento in casa e nello Studentato Filosofico di Tavernerio, dove fu docente di greco. Nel frattempo il P. Lorenzo pensava al Brasile Sud «e a dare una mano laggiù in qualche nostra scuola…» (7.4.66). In effetti andò in Brasile nel 1970, ma l’anno successivo fu destinato al Messico che aveva più urgente bisogno di insegnanti.
Il 1 luglio 1971, ebbero inizio i 33 anni messicani del P. Lorenzo. Fu dapprima a Mazatlán, nel Collegio Instituto Cultural de Occidente, come insegnante di etimologia greca e latina, di inglese e problemi internazionali (1971-1974). Trascorse poi tre anni nella comunità di San Juan del Río (1974-1977) insegnando le stesse materie.
Nel 1977 ritornò a Mazatlán, fino al 1983. Dopo un anno di aggiornamento a Roma, fu destinato alla comunità di filosofia e teologia di Guadalajara: insegnò soprattutto cosmologia per 13 anni nel Seminario Maggiore di Guadalajara (1984-1997), frequentato anche dai Saveriani. Nell’anno 1994 passò alla Casa Regionale dedicandosi al ministero. Era particolarmente richiesto e apprezzato per le celebrazioni del matrimonio e della prima comunione. Nel ’97 cominciarono i primi sintomi della malattia che lo costrinsero a ridurre gradualmente la sua attività.
Il P. Regionale del Messico, nella despedida al termine delle esequie, ci ha consegnato i tratti caratteristici del P. Lorenzo: «La sua acuta intelligenza e preparazione, il suo desiderio insaziabile di conoscere, imparare. La sua donazione alla famiglia Saveriana soprattutto nell’insegnamento ai giovani seminaristi: li aiutava fino in fondo, incoraggiandoli alla vita missionaria».

Fr. Lorenzo Fantini died on May 20 2004, just before midday (local time), in the Regional House of Mexico, Zapopan, Jal. In March 2003, he suffered a stroke and since then he had been in the Regional House, looked after by the confreres, the philosophy students and the domestic personnel.
Born in Romanengo (Cremona), on August 3 1923, he was 80 years old.
A student at the seminary of Cremona until the fifth year of junior high school, in 1939 he joined the Xaverians in S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he made his First Profession on Sept. 12 1940 upon completion of the Novitiate year. He then went to the Mother House in Parma for three years of high school (1940-43) and, after serving as prefect in Poggio S. Marcello (1943-44), he returned to Parma for four years of Theology. He was ordained priest on March 7 1948. He received a glowing report at his presentation to the priesthood ordination: “He has excellent intelligence, prompt intuition and great intellectual stamina… He possesses a resolute and constant willpower, good adaptation to community life, willingness to sacrifice, humility, with a good spirit of piety and a solid spiritual formation.” After ordination he was assigned to the recently founded Xaverian high school in Desio. He worked there until 1960, engaged in twelve hectic years of pastoral work, mission appeals, teaching and attending the “Cattolica” University of Milan, where he obtained a degree in Ancient Arts in 1960.
In January 1960, he was assigned to the mission of Bangladesh; in August he arrived in Glasgow, Scotland, to study English; Jan. 30 1961 saw him in Khulna studying the Bengali language; six months later he was sent to Baradal as assistant parish priest (1961-63). Perhaps it was an excessively rapid insertion: the climate proved to be lethal for his health; worn out physically and psychologically, he was forced to return to Italy in 1964.
When he had recovered, he was sent to Desio (1965-70), which was then the house for adult vocations and, later, the community of the professed students of the normal school course. Fr. Lorenzo worked in ministry and taught in the community of Desio and the Philosophy community of Tavernerio, where he taught Greek. In the meantime, he was thinking about going to South Brazil “to help in one of our schools there…” (July 7 1966). He did go to Brazil in 1970, but was assigned to Mexico the following year because there was a more urgent need of teachers in that Province.
On July 1 1971, Fr. Lorenzo began what would become 33 years in Mexico. Initially, he was based in Mazatlán (Collegio Instituto Cultural de Occidente), teaching Greek and Latin etymology, English and international issues (1971-74). He then spent three years in the community of San Juan del Rio (1974-77) teaching the same subjects. He returned to Mazatlán in 1977 and remained there until 1983.
After a year of aggiornamento in Rome, he was assigned to the philosophy and theology community of Guadalajara; he mainly taught cosmology for 13 years in the Major Seminary of Guadalajara (1984-97), which was also attended by the Xaverians. He moved to the Regional House in 1994, where he worked in the ministry. He was a popular and much appreciated celebrant at weddings and first communions. In 1997, the first symptoms appeared of the illness that forced him to gradually reduce his activity.
At the end of his funeral, the Regional Superior of Mexico outlined the principal characteristics of Fr. Lorenzo’s temperament: “His acute intelligence and preparation, his insatiable desire for knowledge and learning; his self-giving to the Xaverian family, especially in his teaching activity with the young seminarians: he helped them in every way he could, encouraging them to follow the missionary vocation.”
