P. Ettore Fasolini

Il 21 marzo 2010, alla Domus Caritatis "Paolo VI" di Brescia, alle 13,40 è morto il P. Ettore Fasolini. Era stato ricoverato in dicembre, a causa dell'aggravarsi del tumore rilevato nei mesi estivi.
Aveva 78 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Vado Ligure (Savona) il 5.2.1932.
Anche il P. Ettore viene da quell'ambiente bergamasco caratterizzato dalla presenza di famiglie cristiane e operose, di parrocchie vivaci e creative e di zelanti comunità religiose. «Un giorno, raccontò in una intervista a L'eco di Colognola (20.9.87), arrivò un missionario saveriano, P. L. Lini. Parlò ai ragazzi dell'Oratorio. Prima di lasciarci chiese: "Chi vuol fare il missionario"? Alzammo la mano in una decina. Un mese dopo partivo con un gruppetto di compagni: andavamo a fare i missionari». Entrò così tra i Saveriani a Grumone, esattamente il 7.8.1944. Nel settembre 1948 passò a S. Pietro in Vincoli per l'anno di Noviziato e il 12.9.49 emise la Prima Professione. Compì quindi gli studi liceali a Desio (1949-1952). Infine, dopo l'anno di prefettato ad Ancona, fece gli studi teologici a Piacenza. Il 16 marzo 1957 fu ordinato presbitero in Santa Chiara.
Così fu presentato per l'ordinazione presbiterale: «È un tipo che osservato superficialmente, sembra un po' ragazzo. Invece è un carattere sensibile e dotato di belle doti spirituali e intellettuali. Molto aperto, si cura della sua spiritualità, prega bene, osservante della regola. Ha buone tendenze verso i ragazzi, sa scovare e coltivare vocazioni; si fa amare».
Evidentemente con questa presentazione, in un periodo, come quello, di espansione dell'Istituto, P. Ettore 'doveva' essere destinato all'Italia per la formazione. Difatti fu mandato nella Scuola Apostolica di Alzano Lombardo. Vi rimase per otto anni, come vicerettore, insegnante e incaricato della pagina di Missionari Saveriani. 'Contentissimo', perché gli piaceva insegnare e stare con i ragazzi. Come scrisse nella lettera che nel settembre del 1964 inviò al P. Generale per chiedere di essere mandato in missione. La risposta del Superiore con la destinazione all'Indonesia non si fece attendere: il 16 novembre P. Ettore ringraziava: «Solo un bel grazie di tutto cuore. Il desiderio di fare è grande, la fiducia nell'aiuto del Signore, pure».
Il P. Ettore operò in Indonesia dal 1965 al 1970. Un periodo relativamente breve: appena il tempo per apprendere le lingue (indonesiano e mentawaiano), per affacciarsi, da Sipora, sul mondo favoloso delle Mentawai e per introdursi nelle attività pastorali a Pekanbaru.
Nel 1970 fu richiamato in Italia e nominato Rettore della Casa di Salerno. Incarico che ricoprì per un anno soltanto, perché il 29.12.71 il I Capitolo della Regione Italiana lo elesse Superiore Regionale. Il primo Regionale d'Italia, cioè in un servizio praticamente da inventare e da definire. E questo nei difficili anni della contestazione globale, della secolarizzazione. Al riguardo qui ci si limita a ricordare che durante i due mandati di P. Ettore, nella Regione Italiana si dedicò particolare attenzione alle modalità concrete della dimensione comunitaria della vita consacrata e alla fattiva collaborazione tra i quattro Istituti Missionari di origine italiana.
Nel 1979, dopo un anno di aggiornamento, P. Ettore ritornò in Indonesia. Per quattro anni nell'immensa metropoli indonesiana, al Toasebio; poi, per altri quattro, a Dumai, la città del petrolio, a Sumatra: sempre ad annunciare la Parola, a curare l'istruzione, ad affrontare i quotidiani problemi dell'esistenza.
Nel 1988 rientrò definitivamente in Italia: fu a Vicenza (Rettore) poi a Brescia (Direttore di Missionari Saveriani dal 1993 al 2002 e autore di biografie di confratelli e di varie raccolte di favole).
Nel 2002 ha avuto inizio la lunga via crucis che, alla fine, ha portato il P. Ettore all'incontro con il Signore.
Una via crucis per la quale il P. Lino Maggioni ha scritto alla comunità di Brescia: «Avete aiutato un confratello a celebrare la sua morte, come sarebbe piaciuto a lui. E l'avete fatto alla grande. Il gesto a cui avete dato compimento è di quelli che portano aggiunte all'inno della carità scritto da san Paolo: "La carità accontenta anche i più piccoli desideri dei fratelli. La carità dà significato di festa-di-animazione missionaria alla morte di un confratello. La carità ha aiutato P. Ettore ad andare in Paradiso, con il sorriso sulle labbra...".

Fr. Ettore Fasolini died on March 21 2010, at the Domus Caritatis “Paolo VI” in Brescia, Italy. He had been diagnosed with cancer during the previous summer, and had been in care in the clinic since December after his condition worsened.
Born in Vado Ligure (Savona) on Feb. 5, 1932, he was 78 years old.
Fr. Ettore was the son of a typical family of the Bergamo region, well-known for its Christian faith and industriousness, its lively and creative parishes and zealous religious communities. In an interview with the L’Eco di Colognola (Sept. 20, 1987), Fr. Ettore told how a Xaverian missionary, Fr. L. Lini, spoke to the children and asked them, before he left, who wanted to be a missionary. «About ten of us raised our hands. A month later, I left with a small group of companions to become a missionary». He thus joined the Xaverians at Grumone, on Aug. 7 1944. In September 1948, he moved to S. Pietro in Vincoli for the year of Novitiate and on Sept. 12 1949 he made his First Profession. He then completed the liceo program at Desio (1949-52). Finally, after one year as prefect at Ancona, he studied theology at Piacenza. On March 16 1957 he was ordained priest at Santa Chiara.
He was thus presented for ordination to the priesthood: «If one observes him in a superficial manner he seems somewhat boyish. Instead, he has a sensitive temperament and possesses some very good spiritual and intellectual qualities. He is very open and cultivates his spirituality, he prays well and observes the rule. He is good with the students and knows how to discover and cultivate vocations».
Obviously, with such a report and the fact that the Congregation was then in a period of expansion, Fr. Ettore was assigned to Italy to work in formation. He was sent to the minor seminary of Alzano Lombardo, where he remained for eight years as vice-rector, teacher and editor of the local page of Missionari Saveriani. He was “very happy” there because he loved teaching and being with the students, as he told the Superior General in a letter dated September 1964, asking him for a mission assignment. The reply of the Superior General with an assignment to Indonesia was not long in arriving. On Nov. 16 1964, Fr. Ettore replied: «I only want to express my heartfelt gratitude. I have a great desire to do good and I also have a great trust in God’s help».
Fr. Ettore worked in Indonesia from 1965 until 1970. It was a relatively short period of time, just enough to learn the Indonesian and Mentawai languages, get a glimpse of Sipora and the wonderful world of the Mentawai and begin some pastoral work at Pekanbaru.
In 1970 he was called back to Italy and appointed Rector of the Salerno community. He held this office for just one year because, on Dec. 29, 1971, the First Chapter of the Italian Region elected him to the post of Regional Superior. He was the first Regional Superior of Italy, a service that had to be invented and defined from scratch, during the difficult years of global protest and secularization. During his two terms of office, Fr. Ettore dedicated his energies to promoting the community dimension of the consecrated life and forms of effective collaboration among the Italian Missionary Institutes.
In 1979, after a year of aggiornamento, Fr. Ettore returned to Indonesia. He spent four years in the immense metropolis of Toasebio; thereafter he spent another four years at Dumai, the oil city: he announced the Word of God, attended to instruction, and dealt with the daily problems of existence.
In 1988 he returned definitively to Italy: he was Rector at Vicenza, Director of Missionari Saveriani at Brescia from 1993 until 2002, and the author of biographies of confreres and various collections of tales.
His long period of suffering began in 2002 and eventually led to his encounter with the Lord.
Fr. Lino Maggioni wrote to the community of Brescia: «You have helped a confrere to celebrate his death just as he would have wished, and you did it very well. Your gesture reminds me of the words of St. Paul in his hymn of love: “Love meets even the smallest desire of the confreres. Love bestows a meaning of celebration-animation on the death of a confrere. Love helped Fr. Ettore go to Heaven, with a smile on his lips…».
