Il p. Lorenzo Fontana nacque a Verrua Savoia (Torino) nel 1901.
A tredici anni entrò nell'istituto Saveriano a Parma e fu affascinato dalla figura affabile e premurosa di Mons. Conforti, del quale poi assimilò il profondo spirito di fede. La frase, che spesso ripeteva, "Sarà quello che Dio vorrà" non era detta per abitudine.
Dotato d'intelligenza vivace, si applicò, oltre che allo studio, alla musica, alla pittura, alla recitazione e ad altre attività manuali utili alla imprevedibile avventura missionaria.
Appena ordinato sacerdote partì per la Cina (1924). Il cinese divenne la sua lingua abituale parlata e scritta. Amò la Cina come seconda patria, e ciò traspare dal suo romanzo di vita cinese "Niente incenso per lo spirito" (Ed. EMI). Fu rettore del seminario dal quale usciranno vari sacerdoti cinesi. Nel decennio 1940-1950 fu a Shanghai direttore della sezione cinema-radio-teatro del Centro Culturale Cattolico.
Rientrato in Italia, in seguito all'occupazione della Cina da parte delle truppe di Mao Tze Tung si dedicò alla formazione dei futuri missionari come rettore della Casa Madre e poi della scuola apostolica di Desio. Quanti ebbero la sua guida lo ricordano ancora con riconoscenza e ammirazione. Sapeva accogliere e incoraggiare. Come complemento alla scuola proponeva iniziative ed esercitazioni artistiche: musica, teatro, lavori d'officina e di falegnameria o di elettricità. Da parte sua metteva il contributo personale con canti e messe composte su melodie cinesi; compose anche tre apprezzabili drammi d'ispirazione religiosa.
Nel 1966 fu inviato alla casa di Genova-Pegli dove rimase per il resto della sua vita.
Pochi giorni prima di morire chiese d'essere portato, invece che all'ospedale, alla Casa Madre dove si spense serenamente il 22 gennaio1990.

Fr. Lorenzo Fontana died at the Mother House in Parma on Jan. 22 1990. He was 89 years old, born on Oct. 3 1901 at Verrua Savoia (Torino).
He entered the Xaverians at Parma in 1914, welcomed by the Founder, whom he admired for his great spirit of faith. He used to repeat often “Let it be as God wants”, a phrase that described well his sentiments. He professed religious vows on Sept. 17 1921, and during his theology studies, he also developed an interest for music, painting, theater and drama, and also manual works which would be helpful for the unpredictable missionary life.
Soon after his ordination on Oct. 5 1924, he was assigned to China, where he spent over 25 years of his life. He loved China, his second home, and was able to record his thoughts in the Chinese romance he wrote “Niente incenso per lo spirito” (= No incense for the Spirit – Editor EMI). He was rector of the Seminary in Cheng-chow and director of the Shanghai Catholic Cultural Center from 1940 to 1950, in the fields of cinema, radio and theater.
Following the occupation of Mao Tze Tung of China, Fr. Fontana returned to Italy and dedicated himself for the formation of future missionaries as the rector of the Mother House and then of Desio. Many remember him with gratitude and admiration, for he could inspired and encourage. He was a proponent of extra curricular activities, beside the normal theological studies, such as arts, music, theater, mechanics, carpentry and electricity. On his part, he contributed to the community and the Xaverian congregation with his pieces of music for Masses, composed on Chinese melodies, and three religious dramas much appreciated.
He moved to the house of Genova-Pegli in 1966 where he spent another 20 years of his life. A few days before his passing away, instead of going to the hospital, he asked to return to the Mother House in Parma on his deathbed, where he died peacefully on Jan. 22, 1990.
