A Quezon City, Filippine, il 22.10.2013 è morto annegato nella piscina del Sacred Heart Novitiate Retreat House lo studente di 3a Teologia Martin Mbende. Non si sa come si sia consumata la tragedia perché nessun altro era con lui. Trasportato all’Ospedale San Lorenzo, i medici non hanno fatto altro che confermare il decesso.
Non aveva neppure 31 anni, essendo nato a Bafoussam, Camerun, l’11.12.1982
Nato in una famiglia numerosa e profondamente cristiana fu abituato a impegnarsi in diverse attività parrocchiali che lo aprirono alla chiamata del Signore. Alla fine degli studi secondari partecipò a uno stage al piccolo seminario di Bafoussam. Incontrò il P. Franco Sana e decise di diventare Saveriano.
Entrò all’Istituto a Douala-PAF l’1.10.2004. Dopo i tre anni di filosofia fece il Noviziato a Kinshasa. Così lo ricorda un compagno di questo tratto dell’iter formativo saveriano: “Martin era davvero una persona mite nel parlare e nel fare. Aveva il dono dell’ascolto. Fedele negli impegni: la preghiera, il lavoro nell’orto, i turni per preparare la cena, l’apostolato nella parrocchia Saint Bernard. Semplice, sobrio, non esigente. Nel suo conversare trapelava sempre una grande profondità e intelligenza. Un amante della lettura. Sempre in amicizia con tutti. Eravamo in otto e di quattro nazionalità diverse” (B. Mugisho Balika).
Ugualmente positivo il ricordo commosso del suo Maestro di Noviziato: “Sempre sorridente, sempre accogliente con tutti; infondeva ottimismo e gioia. Uomo di preghiera. Aveva il coraggio di andare contro corrente, quando sottolineare certi valori era necessario per il bene della comunità. Fraterno, dialogante e sincero, ispirava fiducia” (P. M. Sciamanna).
La tappa congolese si concluse con la Prima Professione il 15.08.2009.
Dopo il Noviziato fu destinato per lo studio della teologia alle Filippine. Arrivò a Manila, da Kinshasa, verso la fine di agosto del 2009.
Il primo anno, da Settembre ad Aprile 2010, studiò l’inglese e poi per un paio di mesi il Tagalog, “che affrontò con entusiasmo – scrive P. E. Pulcini - consapevole dell’importanza di una anche minima conoscenza della lingua locale, per poter comunicare meglio con le persone che incontrava tutti i giorni”. Dal giugno 2010 al Marzo 2011 frequentò la prima teologia al Loyola School of Theology.
Nell’aprile 2011 fu destinato alla comunità di Project 8 per l’anno di pastorale: riprese lo studio del Tagalog (con buoni risultati), si dedicò al servizio nella comunità formativa e svolse un’intensa attività pastorale. Ritornato nella comunità della teologia frequentò il secondo anno (Giugno 2012 – Marzo 2013).
In Giugno 2013 iniziò il terzo anno: “Gli piaceva studiare. Gustava i contenuti teologici studiati, li condivideva volentieri e li rapportava spesso al suo cammino di Fede personale. L’impegno pastorale e missionario di questo periodo l’ha visto impegnato soprattutto nella catechesi dei fanciulli, nella formazione dei catechisti, nell’animazione liturgica e con i gruppi biblici di adulti. Anche qui sempre costante, organizzato, molto sensibile alla sofferenza dei poveri, attento e delicato nella relazione con i laici con i quali collaborava” (P. E. Pulcini).
Durante l’ultima programmazione venne scelto come coordinatore della comunità per l’anno 2013-2014. I suoi formatori scrivevano di lui: “Martin è una presenza molto positiva, ben integrato e costruttivo nella nostra comunità. Umanamente ricco, è sensibile e raffinato nella relazione con i compagni, generoso e responsabile. Come uno dei “fratelli maggiori” nella comunità, egli cerca di creare opportunità per conversare, accompagnare e trascorrere gratuitamente del tempo con i fratelli più giovani.”
A fondamento di tutto una grande fede, come traspare da questo suo appunto: “Guardo alla mia vita non come alla somma di molti avvenimenti ma piuttosto come a un progressivo svelarsi del piano di Dio su di me.... Io credo che tutto concorre al bene di coloro che amano Dio e anche che la sofferenza di questi giorni non è nulla se paragonata alla gloria che ci sarà rivelata. Affido questo cammino a Dio il cui amore non viene meno. Conto sulla intercessione della Beata Vergine Maria che conosce meglio di qualunque altro i pensieri di Cristo. Sono sicuro dell’intercessione del nostro Fondatore e Padre San Guido Conforti”.

On 22 October 2013, Martin Mbende, a third year Theology student, drowned in the swimming pool of the Sacred Heart Novitiate Retreat House, Quezon City, (Philippines), where he was on retreat with his fellow students. The precise details of the tragedy are unknown because he was alone at the time. He was rushed to the St. Lawrence hospital, but doctors were unable to revive him.
Born in Bafoussam, Cameroon, on 11 December 1982, he was 30 years old.
He was born into a large and profoundly Christian family and he took an active part in various parish activities, which opened his heart to the Lord’s call. At the end of his secondary school studies, he participated in a stage at the small seminary of Bafoussam. He met Fr. Franco Sana and decided to become a Xaverian.
He joined the Institute in Douala for the PAF on 1 October 2004. After three years philosophy he did his Novitiate in Kinshasa. A fellow student who knew him during this phase of his life said: “Martin was a truly meek person in his speech and behavior. He had the gift of listening. He was faithful to his commitments: prayer, work in the garden, taking his turn at preparing dinner and the apostolate in the parish of Saint Bernard. He was simple, moderate and undemanding. In his conversation he was always profound and intelligent. He loved to read. He was always friendly to everyone. Our group was made up of eight students of four different nationalities” (B. Equally positive is the moving memory of his Novice Master: “He was always smiling, welcoming others; he instilled optimism and joy. He was a man of prayer. He had the courage to go against the grain, when it was necessary to emphasize certain values for the good of the community. He was a true brother, a man of dialogue and sincere, he inspired trust in others” (Fr. M. Sciamanna).
The Congolese phase ended with his First Profession on 15 August 2009.After Novitiate he was assigned to the Philippines to study of Theology. He arrived in Manila, from Kinshasa, towards the end of August 2009.
He spent the first year (September 2009 - April 2010) studying English; he then studied Tagalog for a couple of months, a task “he carried out with enthusiasm, well aware of the importance of even a basic knowledge of the local language to communicate better with the people he met every day” (Fr. E. Pulcini).
From June 2010 until March 2011, he attended the first year of Theology at the Loyola School of Theology.
In April 2011 he was assigned to the community of Project 8 for a pastoral year: heresumed the study of Tagalog (with good results), dedicated himself to service in the formation community and carried out an intense pastoral activity.Upon his return to the theology community he attended the second year (June 2012 – March 2013).
In June 2013 he began the third year of theology: “He liked to study and enjoyed theology, sharing willingly with others what he learned and connecting it often to his personal faith journey. The pastoral and missionary commitment of this period saw him engaged mainly in catechesis with children, the formation of catechists, liturgical animation and adult bible groups. Here, too, he was always dedicated and organized in his commitment, very sensitive to the suffering of the poor, attentive and discrete in his relationships with the laity with whom he collaborated” (Fr. E. Pulcini).
During the last community planning he was chosen as the community coordinator for the year 2013-2014. In the words of his formators: “Martin is a very positive presence, he is well integrated and constructive in our community. He has a rich humanity and is sensitive and cultivated, generous and responsible in his relationships with his fellow students. As one of the community’s “elder brothers”, he strives to create opportunities for conversation, accompany and spend time gratuitously with the younger brothers.”
The great faith upon which his life was based transpires from these words he wrote: “I look at my life not as the sum of many events, but, rather, as a progressive unveiling of God’s plan for me.… I believe that everything works for the good of those who love God and also that the suffering of the present moment is nothing when compared to the glory that will be revealed to us. I entrust this journey to God whose love never fails. I rely on the intercession of Our Blessed Lady, who knows the mind of Christ better than anyone. I am sure of the intercession of our Founder and Father, St. Guido Conforti”.
