P. Luigi Medici

La domenica 6 giugno 2010 a Parma in Casa Madre, alle 06,30, è morto il P. Luigi Medici, piegato dal tumore diagnosticato da appena qualche mese.
Aveva 90 anni compiuti, essendo nato a Sassuolo (Modena) il 13.1.1920.
P. Luigi, nato in una famiglia profondamente religiosa, allievo del Seminario diocesano di Reggio Emilia fino al secondo anno di teologia, entrò tra i Saveriani a S. Pietro in Vincoli nel 1941. Scelse l'Istituto Saveriano «soprattutto per l'alto spirito di unione e carità che ho in esso osservato» (Foglio informativo, 2.7.41). Riteneva inoltre che la vocazione missionaria era un dono ricevuto per l'intercessione di Mons. Conforti: «Tutte le sere pregavo Mons. Guido Maria Conforti chiedendogli la grazia di diventare missionario ... quando al vescovo che non intendeva lasciarmi partire dissi che sarei andato nella Congregazione del Vescovo Conforti, mi ha detto "Va', figlio mio, perché non posso dire di no all'amico Guido Maria Conforti» (Memorias p. 32).
Alla fine dell'anno di Noviziato emise la Prima Professione (8.9.42). Passò quindi a Parma per la seconda, terza e quarta teologia. Il 29.6.45 ricevette l'ordinazione presbiterale nella cattedrale di Parma. Così presentato dai formatori: «Intelligenza buona. Volontà costante e generosa. Carattere piacevole e affabile. Spirito di sacrificio. Disciplina esemplare».
Dopo l'ordinazione fu destinato alla casa di Pedrengo per l'animazione missionaria. L'anno successivo, da maggio a novembre, lavorò nell'Opera Divina Provvidenza (questue generi alimentari) e in dicembre fu assegnato al Centro Stampa e Animazione Missionaria che in quel periodo veniva potenziato soprattutto nella tipografia e nella propaganda. P. Luigi ebbe l'incarico di amministratore e, dopo l'anno di riposo a Posillipo (50-51), di addetto all'Ufficio stampa. «Mi sono convinto –scriveva al P. Generale (19.3.50)– che sto compiendo un'opera di apostolato missionario anche se la via per le missioni non si è aperta subito come sognavo fin dal Seminario».
Nel 1954 fu destinato al Brasile sud e – esclusi due periodi piuttosto brevi (68-70: Cagliari e Csam; 83-85: Rettore Casa Generalizia)– in quella Regione ha lavorato fino al 2007.
P. Luigi e i confratelli suoi collaboratori hanno diffuso il Rosario Missionario in Brasile e hanno iniziato la produzione di oggettistica sacra.
Ha lavorato specialmente nella pastorale parrocchiale: Jaguapità, S. José (58-62), Laranjeiras do Sul (62-64), Santa Mariana (64-68 e 70-78), Curitiba Vista Allegre (85-95). Nell'ambito della formazione i superiori lo incaricarono della costruzione dei seminari Saveriani a Jaguapità e Santa Mariana in Paranà e dell' avvio dell'attività formativa nelle due nuove comunità.
Dal 78 all'81 fu Superiore Regionale. Compì il suo servizio dell'Autorità con l'ambizione che: «questa Provincia-Regione sappia veramente servire la Chiesa che è in Brasile nel pieno dispiegamento del nostro carisma missionario ad gentes e susciti tante vocazioni per la nostra famiglia religiosa» (Al P. Gen. 22.7.78).
Negli ultimi anni curò la sistemazione dell'Archivio Regionale. Dal 2007 era a Parma in cura. «Avrei cose meravigliose da scrivere, specialmente da quando sono in Brasile. Ho vissuto la vera epopea di una nazione che esplode in tutti i sensi, anche pastoralmente. Vale la pena lavorare in questo paese.
Ho pure visto nascere, con una gestazione difficile, la nostra Congregazione in questa terra e ne ho vissuto e sofferto le varie fasi, molto spesso pagando di persona e ne sono felicissimo. Piano piano le basi si assestano, i pilastri si solidificando e abbiamo già cominciato ad avere i primi frutti. Ho lavorato molto per iniziare case apostoliche, spesso lottando con coraggio e fede» (21.5.76).

Fr. Luigi Medici died on June 6 2010 at the Mother House in Parma. He had been ill with cancer for the last few months.
Born in Sassuolo (Modena, Italy), on Jan. 13, 1920, he was 90 years old.
Fr. Luigi, who was born into a deeply religious family, studied at the diocesan seminary of Region Emilia until the second year of theology and joined the Xaverians at S. Pietro in Vincoli in 1941. He chose the Xaverian congregation «above all for the noble spirit of unity and love that I observed in it» (July 2, 1941). He also believed that the missionary vocation was a gift he received through the intercession of Guido Maria Conforti: «Each evening I prayed to Conforti asking for the grace to become a missionary… when I told the bishop, who had no intention of letting me go, that I would be joining this Congregation, he said: “God my son, because I cannot say no to my friend Guido Maria Conforti”» (Memories, page 32).
At the end of the year of Novitiate, he made his First Profession (Sept. 8 1942). He then moved to Parma for the second, third and fourth years of theology. He was ordained priest on June 29 1945 in the Cathedral of Parma. His formators said of him: «He is endowed with good intelligence. He is steady and reliable, pleasant and courteous. He has a spirit of sacrifice and good discipline».
After his ordination Fr. Luigi was assigned to the house of Pedrengo to work in missionary animation. The following year, from May until November, he worked at the Opera Divina Provvidenza (an organization that collected and distributed food items), and in December he was assigned to the Centro Stampa e Animazione Missionaria which was then being reinforced in its printing and propaganda sectors. Fr. Luigi was treasurer and, after a one-year break in Posillipo (1950-51), he was attached to the Press Office. On March 19 1950, he wrote to the Superior General: «I am convinced that I am doing missionary work, even though I did not leave immediately for the missions as I had dreamed of since my seminary days».
In 1954, he was assigned to South Brazil and – with the exception of two brief period (1968-70 at Cagliari and at the CSAM; 1983-85 as Rector of the Generalate House) – he worked in the Region until 2007.
Fr. Luigi and the confreres who collaborated with him spread the Missionary Rosary in Brazil and began the production of religious objects. He worked mainly in parish ministry: Jaguapitą, S. Josč (1958-62), Laranjeiras do Sul (1962-64), Santa Mariana (1964-68 and 1970-78), Curitiba Vista Allegre (1985-95).
In the formation sector, the Superiors put him in charge of building the Xaverian seminaries at Jaguapitą and Santa Mariana in Paraną and of starting off the formation program in the two new communities.
From 1978 until 1981, he served as Regional Superior, working to ensure that «this Province-Region might truly serve the Church in Brazil with the full embodiment of its missionary charism ad gentes and raise up many vocations for our religious family» (Letter to the Superior General, July 22, 1978). During his last years in Brazil he took care of the organization of the Regional Archives. From 2007 onwards, Fr. Luigi was in nursing care at Parma.
«I could write many wonderful things, especially since I have been in Brazil I have seen the epic period of a nation that has grown in every way, including the pastoral ministry. It is worthwhile working in this country. I have also experienced the difficult birth of our Congregation in this country and I have witnessed, and suffered, the various stages, often paying a personal price, and I am very happy to have done so. Slowly but surely, we consolidated our position and began to produce fruit. I worked a lot to begin the junior seminaries, often struggling with courage and faith» (My 21, 1976).
