1936 - 2024

Lunedì 01 luglio 2024, alle ore 04.15 è deceduto presso l’Ospedale di Parma, Italia, il nostro confratello vescovo Giorgio Biguzzi. Aveva 88 anni compiuti, essendo nato il 04 febbraio 1936 a Calisese, Comune di Cesena e capoluogo della provincia di Forlì-Cesena (in Emilia-Romagna, Italia).

Dopo le Scuole Elementari a Calisese di Cesena (1942-1947), il giovane Giorgio entra nel Seminario Minore di Cesena dove frequenta le Scuole Medie (1947-1950) e il Ginnasio (1950-1952). Continua gli studi di Liceo Classico e Propedeutica nel Seminario Regionale di Bologna (1952-1956). Il 29 settembre 1956, dopo la IV Liceo, entra in Istituto a San Pietro in Vincoli: “Conobbi l’Istituto Saveriano fin dal Seminario Minore di Cesena. Due seminaristi di quel Seminario mi precedettero nell’entrare nella Congregazione dei Missionari Saveriani: i padri Sandro Sacchetti e Edmondo Alvisi. Nel Seminario di Bologna, durante il Liceo, conobbi e fui in relazione con p. Walter Gardini sx…”. (Da “Cenni storici sulla vocazione” in “Scheda Anagrafica” del 1967).

Concluso il Noviziato a San Pietro in Vincoli, Giorgio emette la prima Professione Religiosa e Missionaria il 19 ottobre 1957.

Prosegue la formazione teologica a Parma (1957-1960) dove emette la Professione Perpetua e viene ordinato presbitero lo stesso giorno (16 ottobre 1960). 

Dopo alcuni mesi trascorsi nella comunità Saveriana di Udine (1961) e due mesi in famiglia, p. Giorgio viene destinato alla Circoscrizione degli Stati Uniti d’America (1962), dove vi rimane fino al 1973. Negli Usa, dopo lo studio della lingua a Petersham, ricopre vari incarichi: vicerettore della comunità Saveriana di Franklin (1962-1969) e Consigliere provinciale. Durante questo periodo frequenta gli studi presso la Marquette University, ottenendo il Master of Arts in Education. Dal 1970 al 1974 è a Holliston dove ricopre l’incarico di rettore e (per due anni non consecutivi) di Maestro dei Novizi.

Nel 1974 p. Giorgio viene destinato alla Sierra Leone dove, dal 1975 al 1977, è rettore del Seminario Minore della Diocesi di Makeni (Sierra Leone) e allo stesso tempo ricopre l’incarico di vice regionale della Circoscrizione Saveriana della Sierra Leone. Dal 1977 al 1983 è Superiore Regionale. Nel 1983 è delegato all’ XI Capitolo Generale. Per un anno (1984) è parroco a Lungi. Nel 1984 viene richiamato in Italia come Maestro dei Novizi, ad Ancona, fino al 1987, anno in cui viene eletto vescovo di Makeni, Sierra Leone. Durante il suo servizio di Maestro dei Novizi, partecipa al Convegno Internazionale sulla Formazione tenutosi a Guadalajara, Messico (1986). 

Il 06 gennaio 1987 viene consacrato vescovo da San Giovanni Paolo II nella Basilica di San Pietro, Roma.

Dal 1987 al 2012 è vescovo residenziale della Diocesi di Makeni, Sierra Leone. In questo periodo è anche Presidente della Conferenza episcopale interterritoriale del Gambia e della Sierra Leone (1998-2001; 2004-2010).

Nel 2013 Mons. Giorgio viene destinato alla Circoscrizione Saveriana dell’Italia dove svolge vari servizi: ministero pastorale a Brescia (2013-2017), rettore della comunità di San Pietro in Vincoli (2018-2021) e ministero pastorale (2017-2023). A motivo della sempre più precaria salute, risiede, quasi per un anno intero, presso la casa di cura “Fraternità San Lorenzo” di San Pietro in Vincoli. Il 29 aprile 2024, come da sua richiesta, veniva destinato alla Comunità Saveriana del IV Piano della Casa Madre.  

«Carissimo P. Gabriele, il Signore, che sceglie le cose piccole e inutili per i suoi disegni, mi ha chiamato ad essere Testimone del Cristo Risorto nella Chiesa di Makeni. È un compito davanti al quale mi sento smarrito e che, tuttavia, vedo come una chiamata ad un servizio più generoso e ad un amore più intenso per Cristo e per i fratelli. Mi affido alla tua preghiera e a quella dei confratelli per poter rispondere a questa chiamata e vivere da vescovo con maggior radicalità quel carisma missionario che Mons. Conforti ricevette in dono da Dio per i suoi figli.

Con l’ordinazione episcopale cambia il rapporto giuridico con la Congregazione, ma rimane intatta l’appartenenza spirituale e il legame affettivo che, proprio in questo momento, sento più forte e profondo.

La Congregazione mi è stata madre amorosa nella vita sacerdotale e religiosa-missionaria. Intendo rimanere figlio affettuoso e devoto nel servizio “della causa che ci stringe in una sola famiglia”. A tutti i confratelli desidero esprimere la mia vivissima gratitudine per il bene, l’aiuto e l’affetto che ho sempre ricevuto. A tutti porgo, in preghiera, auguri di grazia per il Santo Natale. La nascita del Salvatore faccia rivivere in noi quel lontano incendio divorante da cui prese origine la sua Chiesa. Tuo affezionatissimo in Cristo, P. «…sono sicuro che questo fatto non muterà il tuo rapporto con la Famiglia saveriana e con i fratelli. Posso invece prevedere che questo qualificherà questi rapporti che sono e saranno sempre all’insegna della fraternità e della comune consacrazione alla missione… Anche a te auguro nuovamente luce e coraggio dall’Alto per guidare la diocesi di Makeni. Non è un lavoro facile, ne sono cosciente e tu pure; ma sono sicuro che la collaborazione di tutti i confratelli, e particolarmente dei Saveriani, ti renderà più agevole l’impegno.

Grazie anche per avermi offerto l’occasione di vedere una volta ancora la Sierra Leone. Vengo volentieri ad accompagnarti. Bishop Giorgio Biguzzi

1936 - 2024

On Monday, July 1^st, 2024, at 4:15 a.m., our 88-year-old confrere Bishop Giorgio Biguzzi passed away at the Hospital of Parma, Italy. He was born on February 4^th, 1936, in Calinese di Cesena, Forlì-Cesena, Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy.

After elementary school in Calinese di Cesena (1942-1947), young Giorgio entered the Minor Seminary in Cesena to attend middle school (1947-1950) and junior high school (1950-1952). He then moved to the Regional Seminary in Bologna (1952-1956) to attend senior high school (liceo classico). On September 29^th, 1956, upon completing the 4^thyear of senior high school, he entered our Institute in San Pietro in Vincoli: “I came to know about the Xaverian Institute when I was in the Minor Seminary in Cesena. Two seminarians from that seminary entered the Congregation of the Xaverian Missionaries before me, they are Fr. Sandro Sacchetti and Fr. Edmondo Alvisi. During high school at the Seminary in Bologna, I met and kept in contact with Fr. Walter Gardini s.x. …” (see “Cenni storici sulla vocazione” in Scheda Anagrafica, 1967.)

At the end of the novitiate in San Pietro in Vincoli, Giorgio made his first religious and missionary profession on October 19^th, 1957.

His formation continued with theological studies in Parma (1957-1960), where he made his perpetual profession (October 16^th, 1960) and, on the same day, was ordained a priest.

After spending some months with the Xaverian community in Udine (1961) and staying two months with his family, Fr. Giorgio was assigned to the USA Circumscription (1962); he would remain there until 1973. In the USA, he learned English in Persham, then carried out several tasks: vice-rector of the Xaverian community in Franklin (1962-1969) and provincial councillor. It was during that time that he studied at la Marquette University where he obtained an MA in Education. From 1970 to 1974, he was in Holliston to carry out the task of rector and, in two different years, that of master of novices. 

In 1974, Fr. Giorgio was assigned to Sierra Leone. There, from 1975 to 1977, he worked as rector of the Minor Seminary of the Diocese of Makeni and, at the same time, carried out the task of vice regional of the Xaverian Circumscription of Sierra Leone. From 1977 to 1983, Fr. Giorgio was regional superior and, in 1983, was elected delegate to the XI General Chapter. He worked for one year (1984) as pastor of the parish in Lungi. In 1984, he was asked to return to Italy to take on the role of master of novices in Ancona. He served as master of novices until 1987 – the year when he was appointed Bishop of Makeni, Sierra Leone. During his tenure as master of novices, he took part in the International Conference on Formation held in Guadalajara, Mexico (1986).

On January 6^th, 1987, he was consecrated bishop by St John Paul II in St Peter Basilica, Rome. 

From 1987 to 2012, he was the residential Bishop of the Diocese of Makeni, Sierra Leone. In that same period, he also held the post of President of the Inter-territorial Catholic Bishops’ Conference of The Gambia and Sierra Leone (1998-2001 and 2004-2010).

In 2013, Msgr. Giorgio was assigned to the Xaverian Circumscription of Italy where he would carry out several tasks: pastoral ministry in Brescia (2013-2017); rector of the community (2018-2021) and pastoral ministry in San Pietro in Vincoli (2017-2023). Due to his declining health, he resided for almost one full year in the nursing home “Fraternità San Lorenzo”, San Pietro in Vincoli. On April 29^th, 2024, at his request, he was assigned to the Xaverian Community of the Fourth Floor of the Mother House.  

«Dear Fr. Gabriele, 

the Lord, who choses small and useless things to carry out his plans, called me to become a Witness of the Risen Lord in the Church of Makeni. It is a task before which I feel lost but which I view as a call to a more generous service and a more intense love for Christ and for the brethren. I rely on your prayer and that of our confreres to be able to respond to this call and, as bishop, live out with greater radicalism the missionary charism that Bishop Conforti received as a gift from God for his children.

The episcopal ordination changes my juridical relationship with the congregation, but the spiritual belonging and the affective bond remains intact, which, at this very moment, I feel stronger and deeper.

The Congregation has been a loving mother to me in my priestly and religious-missionary life. I intend to remain a loving and devoted son in the service “of the cause that unites us in a single family.” I wish to express to all the confreres my heartfelt gratitude for the good, help and affection I have always received. To all I offer, in prayer, wishes for a Holy Christmas full of graces. May the Saviour’s birth revive in us that distant devouring fire from which his Church took its origin. Rest in Peace

«...I am sure that this event will not change your relationship with the Xaverian Family and the brothers. In fact, I foresee that it will qualify such relationship, which is and will always be marked by fraternity and by the common consecration to the mission... Once again I wish that light and courage from on High may assist you in leading the diocese of Makeni. It is not an easy job – I am aware of it and so are you – but I am sure that the cooperation of all the brethren, and particularly the Xaverians, will make your commitment easier. 

Thank you also for giving me the opportunity to visit Sierra Leone once again. I will gladly accompany you. One last thank you for your work in the novitiate: you have carried it out with intelligence and love. Thank you.
