P. Sperindio Orlandini

Verso le 04.00 del 15.7.2004, nella nostra casa di Genova-Pegli è morto, per infarto, il P. Sperindio Orlandini. L’attacco cardiaco si è sviluppato verso le tre e mezzo: il confratello ha chiamato il P. Mario Tognali, gli ha chiesto l’assoluzione e nello spazio di mezzora ha cessato di vivere.
P. Sperindio aveva 89 anni essendo nato a Villa Sesso (RE) il 7.4.1915.
Allievo del Seminario di Reggio Emilia fino alla terza Teologia, si forgiò una personalità ancorata a una visione di fede netta e severa: «sono convintissimo, estremamente persuaso, che io sono nulla, che il Signore è tutto e mi vuole molto bene… Dalla terza liceale mi sono imposto di far in modo di avere sempre l’ultimo posto e ho chiesto al Signore di battermi con molte umiliazioni» (31.3.46). Entrò tra i Saveriani nel 1938 a S. Pietro in Vincoli dove fece l’anno di Noviziato concluso il 12.09.39 con la Prima professione. Passò quindi a Parma: qui frequentò l’ultimo anno di teologia e il 23.03.1940 fu ordinato presbitero.
Il suo primo incarico fu quello di Vice parroco (40-46) al Tempio del S. Cuore dove «pieno di gioia, entusiasta della sua missione di prete e di missionario… seppe comunicare con disarmante ma travolgente semplicità la gioia e la bellezza del vivere secondo Dio» (U. Trombi, 16.7.04).
Nel 1946 fu destinato alla Cina che raggiunse l’11.5.1946 con i PP. Chiarel, Sguazzi e Toscano. Studiò il cinese per qualche mese a Cheng Chow e poi a Pechino. Destinato nel settembre 1948 alla diocesi di Cheng Chow, fu aiutante del parroco della cattedrale, impegnato nel catechismo, il canto, le confessioni. Un’altra attività, impellente in quel momento storico in cui si stava concludendo l’ultimo atto della guerra civile tra comunisti e nazionalisti, fu la cura dei numerosi feriti di entrambi gli schieramenti. Successivamente, per la crescente ostilità dei nuovi signori nei confronti della chiesa, il lavoro si ridusse alla pastorale di conservazione e all’attività di farmacista. Assicurava il 7.4.53: «in questo tempo nessun timore, nessun insulto, nessuna violenza ha mai toccato il fondo del mio cuore, sempre… in perfetta pace».
Nell’ottobre del 1953 fu espulso dalla Cina. Venne richiamato in Italia dove ricoprì vari incarichi: insegnante di Liturgia e ministero a Piacenza; vicerettore e vice-maestro a S. Pietro in vincoli (54-56), parroco al Tempio del S. Cuore (56-59), aiutante alla Procura di Roma (59-60), confessore e propagandista a S. Pietro in Vincoli (60-62). Furono anni in cui P. Sperindio ebbe a che fare con qualche problema di salute; a volte, forse anche in conseguenza delle prove sofferte in Cina, appariva come provato e preoccupato per i vari impegni, ma sempre sostenuto da una grande fede in Dio al quale chiedeva «la forza di superare quei momenti di depressione, di sospetto e di sfiducia che ogni tanto si affacciano alla mia mente e che, grazie a Dio, supero sempre sebbene con molta fatica» (4.4.60).
Nel 1962 ottenne di ripartire per la missione, in Indonesia. Lavorò a Padang (62-70) in seminario e nella vicina parrocchia di S. Francesco e poi come Vice parroco della cattedrale. Rientrato in Italia, fu a Piacenza (70-76) con incarichi vari, a Nizza Monferrato (76-79) come Rettore e Economo. Dal 1979 risiedeva nella comunità di Genova-Pegli incaricato dei benefattori e addetto al ministero.
Scriveva il 19.3.1990: «Ho cercato fondamentalmente di seguire un consiglio che il P. Amatore Dagnino mi diede alla vigilia della mia partenza per la Cina: avere le ginocchia da cammello -preghiera umile e costante-, le spalle da somarello -operare con semplicità, con costanza, anche nei lavori più umili e pesanti, in obbedienza a Dio, ai segni dei tempi e ai Superiori-, e avere bocca di porcello -adattamento al cibo, ai costumi e alle difficoltà della nuova situazione di vita e di lavoro».

Fr. Sperindio Orlandini died of a heart attack in the house of Genova-Pegli at about 4:00 am in the morning of July 15 2004. When the heart attack struck him at 3:30 am, he called for Fr. Mario Tognali who gave him absolution. Born in Villa Sesso (RE), on April 7 1915, Fr. Sperindio was 89 years old.
He studied at the Seminary of Reggio Emilia until the Third year of Theology, forming a character that was anchored to a clear and stern vision of faith: “I am extremely convinced that I am as nothing, that the Lord is everything and that he loves me… From the third year of high school, I have imposed upon myself to occupy the last place and I have asked the Lord to humiliate me often” (March 31, 1946). In 1938, he joined the Xaverians for Novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli and made his First Profession on Sept. 12 1939. He then moved to Parma to complete Theology before being ordained priest on March 23 1940. His first appointment (1940-46) was as assistant parish priest at the Temple of the Sacred Heart in Parma where “full of joy, enthusiastic about his mission as a priest and a missionary… he communicated to the people, with disarming but overwhelming simplicity, the joy and beauty of a life lived in accordance with God’s will." (U. Trombi).
Fr. Orlandini was assigned to China in 1946, and arrived there on May 11 1946 with Frs. Chiarel, Sguazzi and Toscano. He studied Chinese at Cheng Chow and then at Peking. In September 1948, he was sent to the diocese of Cheng Chow, as assistant priest of the cathedral, teaching catechism, singing and hearing confessions. Another activity also kept him busy: the war between the communists and nationalists was coming to an end and there were many wounded on both sides who needed care. As a result of the growing hostility of the new rulers towards the Church, his pastoral activity was reduced to one of maintenance and he also worked as a pharmacist. On April 7 1953, he wrote the reassuring words: “In this period I have experienced no fear, and endured neither insults nor violence; I am always… in perfect peace”.
Fr. Orlandini was expelled from China in Oct. 1953. He was called back to Italy where he covered various roles: ministry and professor of Liturgy in Piacenza; vice-rector and vice-novice master in S. Pietro in Vincoli (1954-56), parish priest at the Temple of the Sacred Heart (1956-59), assistant at the Procura in Rome (1959-60), confessor and propagandist at S. Pietro in Vincoli (1960-62). During these years, he experienced some health problems; sometimes, perhaps also as a consequence of the trials he had endured in China, he seemed to be tired and concerned about his various commitments, but he was ever sustained by a great faith in God, asking Him for “the strength to overcome those moments of depression, doubt and lack of confidence that every so often come to the surface of my mind; so far, thank God, I have always beaten them, though with great effort” (April 4 1960).
In 1962 he was allowed to leave for the mission in Indonesia. He worked at Padang (1962-70) in the seminary and the nearby parish of St. Francis and then as assistant parish priest of the cathedral. On his return to Italy, he was assigned to Piacenza (1970-76) with various responsibilities, to Nizza Monferrato (1976-79) as rector and administrator. From 1979 he resided in the community of Genova-Pegli where he was put in charge of the Benefactors and assigned to ministry.
On March 19 1990, he wrote: “I have basically tried to follow a piece of advise given to me by Fr. Amatore Dagnino on the eve of my departure for China: you should be humble and constant in prayer; you should work in all simplicity and with steadfastness even in the most humble and demanding jobs, in obedience to God, the signs of the times and the Superiors; and you should adapt for the food, customs and difficulties you will encounter in a new life and work situation.”
