P. Lorenzo Caselin

LORENZO CASELIN

Aveva 93 anni compiuti. Era nato a Santorso (Vicenza – Italia) il 5 settembre 1923.

Vocazione adulta, maturò gradualmente la decisione di farsi missionario. Del resto visse la sua giovinezza negli anni cruciali della seconda guerra mondiale. Fu sotto le armi dal gennaio 1943 al 15 luglio 1946;

Riposi in pace.

 LORENZO CASELIN

Fr. Lorenzo Caselin died after a long illness in the clinic run by the Piccole Figlie, in Parma, on 31 January 2017.

Born in Santorso (Vicenza, Italy), on 5 September 1923, he was 93 years old.

He was an adult vocation and his decision to become a missionary matured gradually. As a young man he experienced the Second World war and served in the army from January 1943 until 15 July 1946.

He was a prisoner of the Nazis (9 September 1943 - 8 May 1945) in the concentration camp at Schokken (Poland), and was subsequently detained by the Allied Forces at Ljubotin (URSS – Ukraine) until his repatriation on 5 October 1945.

Back home in Italy he began to think about his future: “as an expression of my gratitude to God, I thought about an apostolic commitment with the parochial Catholic Action, where I got to know some excellent young people. […], who helped me to understand the importance of the words of the Gospel (Lk 9:25) that had transformed the life of St. Francis Xavier: «For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?»” (Rocca, 15 February 1963, p. 30).

In 1951 he joined the Vicenza community of don Ottorino Zanon, who was setting up the Pia Società di San Gaetano.

Five years later, on 1 September 1956, he joined the Xaverians in order to become a missionary.

After a year studying Latin in Nizza Monferrato, he was admitted to Novitiate in San Pietro in Vincoli. He made his First Profession on 15 September 1958. He then moved to Piacenza for the Introductory Year and, the following year, he arrived in Parma to begin the four years of Theology. He was ordained priest in Parma on 28 October 1962.

In the six years of Xaverian formation he always received good reports from his formators: for example, the report presenting him to Final Profession says that “he possesses a good practical intelligence and an open character. He is resourceful and stands out for his rectitude, strong will, spirit of sacrifice and missionary zeal” (10.8.1961).

After his ordination he served as treasurer in the senior high school community of Tavernerio (1963-1968).

In 1968 he was assigned to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he worked in the pastoral ministry in Fizi (1969-71). However, two years later, health problems forced him to return to Italy, where he was assigned to ministry in Udine (1972-74).

He returned to the Congo in 1974 and worked there until 2013 as chaplain and treasurer in Kamituga (1974-77), Mungombe (1977-85) and Luvungi (1985-88); chaplain in Mulenge (1988-92); treasurer in Uvira and then in Kavimvira (1992-95); chaplain in Kasongo Ngene (1995-97); pastoral ministry and administration in Bukavu (1997-2013),

The agora of Fr. Lorenzo were the 34 villages in the forest, destitute families, sick people who were unable to pay for medical treatment, children suffering with polio in Kavimvira and, in the Xaverian communities, his service as treasurer.

His unique style was “a witness of joy and faith in your mission, under the protection of the Lord and Our Blessed Lady, of your attachment to the people among whom the Lord has sent you to live out your faith. Always be joyful, generous, enthusiastic and ‘contagious’” (Fr. G. Ferrari, 26.1.83).

A few months previously (13.7.82) Fr. Lorenzo  had written to Fr. Ferrari: “I am convinced that the time has come to show the missionary spirit of incarnation, adaptation and acceptance of the African reality … that is still far from being ‘integrated’ into our daily life and relationships”.

It was an invitation to follow the new mission paths that Pope John Paul II spoke about in his address in Kinshasa on 2 May 1980: “The other peoples must learn to receive from the African peoples, who do not need only material or technical assistance. They also have a need to give: their heart, wisdom, culture, sense of humanity and their sense of God, which in many others is not so alive.

On this occasion I wish to launch a solemn appeal to the entire world for mutual help at an international level; in other words, an exchange in which each party makes its own constructive contribution to the progress of humanity”.

Fr. Lorenzo was in nursing care in Parma from 2013 until his death.

May he rest in peace
