1938 - 2024

Sabato 16 novembre 2024, nelle prime ore del mattino, è deceduto per problemi respiratori - presso il Dispensario della Parrocchia San Giudo Maria Conforti di Kamenge, Burundi - il nostro confratello p. Modesto Todeschi. Originario di (Monte di) Sover, Trento, Italia, p. Modesto aveva quasi 86 anni essendo nato il 30 novembre 1938.

Modesto frequenta le Scuole Elementari a Sover per poi entrare nel Seminario Diocesano di Trento dove frequenta le Scuole Medie e il Liceo Classico, ottenendo il titolo di “Maturità Classica”. Nello stesso Seminario studia la Filosofia e la Teologia (1959-1964). Per due anni è anche prefetto dello stesso Seminario Diocesano di Trento (1961-1963). Nella cattedrale di Trento, viene ordinato presbitero (28.06.1964)

Modesto sente il desiderio delle missioni nel 1956 dopo aver ascoltato una conferenza in Seminario di un certo p. Fari, Comboniano, e dopo aver incontrato nel 1957 il padre Valter Gardini (visitatore dei seminari in quel periodo), ma non riceve il permesso dei suoi Direttori Spirituali. Dopo aver ottenuto il permesso del suo Vescovo, il 2 ottobre 1964 don Modesto entra nella casa saveriana di Nizza Monferrato, per l’anno di noviziato. Qui emette la sua prima professione religiosa e missionaria, il 3 ottobre 1965.

Nel dicembre dello stesso anno (1965) è a Bruxelles, Belgio, per lo studio della lingua francese. Nel dicembre del 1966 è già a Murago, provincia di Bururi, Burundi, come vicario parrocchiale e economo. Il 3 ottobre 1969 emette la Professione Perpetua nelle mani del Vescovo di Bururi (Joseph Martin), delegato dal Superiore Religioso dei Saveriani del Burundi. Dopo un periodo di riposo in Italia (1971), dal 1972 al 1976 è a Rumeza, provincia di Bururi, Burundi, come parroco e superiore.

Dopo un anno di aggiornamento pastorale trascorso in Belgio (1976-1977), p. Modesto dal 1977 al 1981 è Direttore del Centro Pastorale di Buta, provincia di Bururi, Burundi. Dal 1979 al 1981 p. Modesto è anche viceparroco a Rumonge, provincia di Rumonge, Burundi, mantenendo il servizio di Direttore del Centro Pastorale di Buta.

Il 20 novembre 1981 p. Modesto viene espulso dal Burundi.

Dal 1982 al 1989, p. Modesto è a Vicenza, Italia, come rettore della casa apostolica.

Nel 1989 p. Modesto ritorna in Burundi, più precisamente a Rumeza, come vice parroco e animatore missionario (1989-1990).

Nel 1990 viene nominato Superiore Delegato per il Burundi fino al 1993. In questi tre anni è anche viceparroco e promotore vocazionale a Buyengero, Burundi.

Dal 1993 al 1996 è Superiore Regionale del Burundi. Nel 1994 partecipa al Convegno Internazionale sulla Formazione a Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

È viceparroco (1996-1999) e successivamente parroco (1999-2002) di Gisanze, Burundi. In questo stesso periodo p. Modesto è anche consigliere regionale.

Nel 2001 partecipa al XIV Capitolo Generale svolto a Guadalajara, Jalisco, Messico.

Dal 2002 al 2005 è Vice Superiore Regionale del Burundi. In questo periodo è anche a Kamenge – Centro Giovanile (2002-2004) come rettore della comunità, responsabile della Animazione Missionaria e Vocazionale e impegnato nella pastorale giovanile. Da 2004 al 2008 è nella nuova Casa di Animazione Missionaria e Animazione Vocazionale come rettore (2004-2005) e poi come animatore missionario e vocazionale.

Dal 2008 al 2011 è Superiore Regionale e allo stesso tempo rettore della casa di Bujumbura (Domus).

Dal 2011 al 2014 è nuovamente Superiore Regionale.

Nel 2013, partecipa al XVI Capitolo Generale a Tavernerio. Dal 2014 al 2017 è consigliere regionale.

Dal 2014 al 2019 è a Bugwana come rettore e animatore missionario.

Dal 2017 al 2020 è consigliere regionale. Dal 2019 al 2022 è a Bujumbura – Kamenge – G. M. Conforti prima come viceparroco e poi come rettore e animatore missionario (2022).

Nel 2022 rientra in Italia per cure presso la Casa Madre di Parma, per poi ritornare in Burundi in luglio 2023, servendo come viceparroco a Kamenge e dedicandosi alla Pastorale dei malati.

«Reverendissimo P. Generale, riconoscente al Signore e a Lei per questo anno di Noviziato nella Pia Società di San Francesco Saverio, dopo aver approfondito la conoscenza e l’amore per quest’Opera voluta da Dio per il bene della Chiesa, chiedo umilmente, conscio di ricevere un dono e un privilegio davvero grande, di essere ammesso alla Professione dei voti religiosi e diventare così figlio della Famiglia di Mons. Conforti.
In questo modo, così sacro, voglio esprimere a Dio e ai Rev. Superiori presenti e futuri di cui Lei ora è il rappresentante, obbedienza fedele, voluta e amata nello spirito più conforme alla mente del Ven. Fondatore…
Tale Professione che porrò nelle Sue mani vuole essere espressione viva e continuata di totale donazione a Dio, di disponibilità di impegno sincero verso la professione nell’esercizio più pieno del sacerdozio che Cristo ci ha elargito» (lettera al Superiore Generale, Giovanni Castelli, per chiedere di essere ammesso alla Prima Professione, Nizza Monferrato, 08.09.1965).

«Reverendissimo P. Regionale, P. Francesco De Zen, dopo tre anni di vita in Comunità Saveriana, sento davvero che non sono io che dono, ma è tutta una famiglia che dona a me. E la domanda per la PROFESSIONE PERPETUA, in verità, la sento come un privilegio non tanto come un piacere che faccio io ad altri. D’altra parte, mi sembra così spontaneo questo atto che non mi sento affatto obbligato da formule + o – giuridiche. Voglia, perciò, gradire i miei sentimenti e promesse di legame ed affetto per la Famiglia Saveriana, i suoi fini e il suo Ven. Fondatore. In Cristo, aff.mo, p. Il 16 novembre 2024, p. Modesto è portato dagli Angeli al cospetto dell’Altissimo per ricevere la ricompensa del servitore buono e fedele.

Fr. Modesto Todeschi

1938 -2024

In the early morning of Saturday, November 16^th, 2024, due to respiratory failure, our confrere Fr. Modesto Todeschi passed away at the dispensary of St Guido Maria Conforti Parish, Kamenge, Burundi. He was almost 86, as he was born in Monte di Sover, Trento, Italy, on November 30^th, 1938.

The child Modesto attended elementary school in Sover. He then entered the Diocesan Seminary in Trento, where he attended middle school and high school (liceo classico) and obtained the maturity diploma in classical studies. He studied philosophy and theology in that same Seminary (1959-1964), where for two years (1961-1963) he was also prefect of students. He was ordained a priest in the cathedral of Trento (June 28^th, 1964).

Modesto felt a call to missionary life in 1956, after listening to a speech delivered in the Seminary by a certain Comboni Missionary called Fr. Fari, and in 1957, following a meeting with Fr. Valter Gardini (then visitor of seminaries). However, he did not yet receive the approval of his Spiritual Directors. Only after obtaining his Bishop’s permission, on October 2^nd, 1964, Fr. Modesto would enter the Xaverian house in Nizza Monferrato for the year of novitiate. There, he made his first religious and missionary profession on October 3^rd, 1965.

In December of that same year (1965), he went to Brussels, Belgium, to study French. In December 1966, her reached Murago, Bururi Province, Burundi, where he worked as assistant pastor and treasurer. On October 3^rd, 1969, he made his perpetual profession in the hands of the Bishop of Bururi (Joseph Martin), delegate of the Religious Superior of the Xaverians in Burundi. After a period of rest in Italy (1971), from 1972 to 1976, he was in Rumeza, Bururi Province, Burundi, as pastor and superior.

Following one year in Belgium (1976-1977) for a refresher course in pastoral ministry, from 1977 to 1981, Fr. Modesto was director of the Pastoral Centre of Buta, Burura Province, Burundi. From 1979 to 1981, while carrying out the work as director of the Pastoral Centre, Fr. Modesto was also assistant pastor of Rumonge, Rumonge Province.

On November 20^th, 1981, Fr. Modesto was expelled from Burundi.

From 1982 to 1989, Fr. Modesto was in Vicenza, Italy, as rector of the Xaverian minor seminary (casa apostolica).

In 1989, Fr. Modesto returned to Burundi, specifically to Rumeza, as assistant pastor and promoter of mission awareness (1989-1990).

In 1990, he was appointed Delegate of Burundi until 1993. During those three years, he was also assistant pastor and promoter of mission awareness in Buyengero.

From 1993 to 1996, he was Regional Superior of Burundi. In 1994, he participated in the International Convention on Formation, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Subsequently, he was assistant pastor (1996-1999) and pastor (1999-2002) of Gisanze, Burundi. In that same period, Fr. Modesto was also regional councillor. In 2001, he participated in the XIV General Chapter that was held in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

From 2002 to 2005, he was Vice Regional Superior of Burundi. During that time (2002-2004) he stayed in Kamenge – Youth Centre as Rector of the community, in charge of mission awareness and vocation promotion, and youth ministry. From 2004 to 2008, at first, he was rector of the new House for the Promotion of Mission Awareness and Vocations (2004-2005), later placed in charge of mission awareness and vocation promotion.

From 2008 to 2011, he was both Regional Superior and rector of the house (Domus) in Bujumbura.

From 2011 to 2014, he was once again Regional Superior.

In 2013, he took part in the XVI General Chapter held in Tavernerio, Italy. From 2014 to 2017 he was Regional Councillor.

From 2014 to 2019, he was rector and mission awareness promoter in Bugwana.

From 2017 to 2020, he was Regional Councillor. From 2019 to 2022, he was in Bujumbura – Kamenge – G.M. Conforti, at first, as assistant pastor, then as rector and promoter of mission awareness (2022). 

In 2022, he returned to Italy for medical care at the Mother House in Parma. He was then back to Burundi in July 2023 to serve as assistant pastor of Kamenge and devoting himself to ministry among the sick.

«Most Reverend Father General, grateful to the Lord and to you for this year of Novitiate in the Pius Society of St Francis Xavier, and after deepening my knowledge and love for this Work which God wanted for the good of the Church, I humbly ask, aware of receiving a truly great gift and privilege, to be admitted to the profession of the religious vows and thus become a member of Msgr. Conforti’s Family.
In this holy manner, I wish to express to God and to the present and future Superiors, of whom you are now the representative, my faithful obedience – a desired and loved obedience – in the spirit most in keeping with the mind of the Venerable Founder. …
The profession I will place into your hands is meant to be the expression of a life totally dedicated to God; this profession is also a sign of my availability to commit myself to a sincere service in that fullness of priesthood Christ has granted us» (from the Letter to the Superior General, Giovanni Castelli, applyng for admission to the first Profession. «Most Reverend Regional Superior, Fr. Francesco De Zen, after three years of Xaverian Community life, I truly feel that I am not giving, rather that I am receiving from an entire family. I truly feel that my application for admission to the PERPETUAL PROFESSION is a privilege rather than a favour I do to others. On the other hand, this act is so spontaneous that I do not feel constraint by any more or less juridical formulas. Please, accept my intentions and promises of affection toward the Xaverian Family and its goals, as well as to our Venerable Founder. Yours, in Christ, Fr. Modesto Todeschi. Murago, Burundi, August 7^th, 1968».

On November 16^th, 2024, the Angels brought Fr. Modesto in front of the Most High to receive the recompense of the good and faithful servant.
