(1941 - 2021)
Sabato 1° maggio 2021, verso le ore 15, è deceduto il confratello p. Primo Battistini sx. Non vedendolo arrivare per la recita del rosario e la successiva preghiera vespertina comunitaria, i confratelli l’hanno trovato seduto e riversato nella sala televisione della comunità di San Pietro in Vincoli. P. Primo aveva 80 anni, essendo nato il 3 febbraio 1941 a Montiano (Forlì-Cesena).
Negli anni Cinquanta, con l’idea di farsi prete, il giovane Primo studia nel seminario di Cesena e poi in quello regionale di Bologna. Viene ordinato presbitero a Cesena il 29 giugno 1965. Durante il suo servizio di cappellano nella Parrocchia di S. Agostino (Cesena), don Primo matura la decisione di entrare tra i Missionari Saveriani “con il desiderio di dedicarmi al servizio delle missioni. Desiderio che provo già da alcuni anni…”. Il 14 settembre 1969 entra nella comunità saveriana di Nizza Monferrato dove vive l’anno di Noviziato ed emette la prima professione religiosa e missionaria il 12 settembre 1970.
Dopo due anni di servizio nella famiglia saveriana a Tavernerio come insegnante (1970-1972), p. Primo viene destinato all’Amazzonia. Dopo lo studio della lingua a Belém, e una breve esperienza iniziale di viceparroco a Acará, dal 1973 al 1980 è impegnato come Direttore del Centro Catechetico di Abaetetuba. In quegli anni è anche viceparroco della cattedrale di Abaetetuba (1978-1980). In seguito p. Primo ritorna a Acará come parroco (1980-1983). Dal 1984 al 1988 lavora nella pastorale operaia a Barcarena, nella parrocchia di S. Francisco Xavier.
Dopo un anno di pastorale operaia a Belém e qualche mese di aggiornamento, p. Primo presta il suo servizio come educatore di leader e catechisti, prima a Belém (1989-1994), e poi ad Altamira (1994-1998). Dal 1998 al 2003 è incaricato di “Giustizia e Pace” a Belém.
Dal 2003 al 2013 p. Primo si dedica alla pastorale sociale prima a Ananindeua (2003-2005), poi a Belém (2005-2007), successivamente a Ourilandia (2007-2013) e, infine, a Tucumã (2013-2020).
Nel marzo del 2020, a causa di motivi di salute, p. Primo ritorna in Italia. Destinato all’Italia (1° gennaio 2021), p. Primo vive nella comunità di San Pietro in Vincoli, dedicandosi generosamente al ministero.
“Il nostro ruolo come missionari non è più quello di protagonisti per dirigere e coordinare. È diventato un ruolo di appoggio, di accompagnamento, di essere a fianco anziché in testa. È più un ruolo di servizio che un ruolo di maestri, nel rispetto della loro cultura”. (Ottobre 2004)
Il 1° maggio 2021, p. Primo viene portato dagli Angeli in Paradiso per ricevere la ricompensa del servitore fedele.

Fr. Primo Battistini passed away on May 1st, 2021, at 3:00 pm. (local time). Not seeing him arrive for the recitation of the Rosary and the subsequent community prayer of Vespers, the Xaverian confreres found him sitting at a table, next to the Television Room, in the Xaverian Community of St. Pietro in Vincoli (Ravenna) and holding in his hands the list of the Fathers present in the community and their phone numbers. Fr. Primo Battistini, born on February 3rd, 1941 in the town of Montiano (Forlì – Cesena), was now 80 years old.
In the 1950s, with the idea of becoming a Priest, young Primo entered and studied in the Diocesan Seminary of Bologna. On June 19th, 1965, Primo Battistini was ordained Priest in the city of Cesena. During his ministry as Assistant Parish Priest of St. Augustine (Cesena), Don Primo matures the decision to enter the Xaverian Misssionary Society “with the desire to dedicate myself to the service of the missions. It is a desire I have had for some years ….”.
On September 14th, 1969, Fr. Primo Battistini entered the Xaverian Community of Nizza Monferrato for the year of Novitiate, and celebrated his First Religious Missionary Profession on September 12th, 1970.
After two years of ministry and service in the Xaverian Missionary Community of Tavernerio (Como – IT) as College teacher, Fr. Primo was assigned for mission work in the area of the Amazons of North Brazil. After studying the Portuguese Language in the city of Belém, and a brief initial experience as Assistant Parish Priest in the town of Acará, from 1973 to 1980, Fr. Battistini was named Director of the Catechetical Center of Abaetetuba (1978-1980). During this period he was also Assistant Parish Priest of the Cathedral of Abaetetuba. Later, Fr. Primo Battistini returned as Parish Priest in the town of Acará (1980-1983). From 1984 to 1988, he worked and ministered in pastoral care in the Parish of St. Francis Xavier, in the town of Barcarena.
After a year of pastoral work and ministry in the city of Belém and a few months of updating, Fr. Primo ministered as Formator and Educator of Local Catechists and Leaders, first in Belém (1989-1994) and then in Altamira (1994-1998). From 1998 to 2003, he was in charge of the Justice and Peace Pastoral Program in the city of Belém. From the year 2003 to 2013, Fr. Primo Battistini dedicated himself to social pastoral care, first, in Ananindeua (2003-2005), then in Belém (2005-2007), then in Ourilandia (2007-2013), and finally in Tucumã (2013-2020).
In March 2020, due to health reasons, Fr. Primo Battistini returned to Italy. Assigned to the Xaverian Region of Italy (January 1st, 2020), Fr. Primo Battistini lived in the Xaverian Community of San Pietro in Vincoli, dedicating himself generously to the priestly ministry in the local area of the Romagna.
“Our role as missionaries is no longer to be protagonists to direct and to coordinate. It has become a supporting role, an accompaniment, to work side by side, rather than in the lead. It is more a service than a role of masters, respecting the culture of everyone.” (October 2004)
On May 1st, 2021, Fr. Primo Battistini was brought by the Angels to Heaven to receive the reward of the faithful servant.
