Verso l’una del 22 maggio 2020, è deceduto, nell’ospedale di Vicenza dove era stato ricoverato il giorno prima per problemi respiratori, P. Stefano Berton. Il confratello aveva 85 anni, essendo nato il 20.07.1934, a Santorso (Vicenza – IT).
Dopo aver frequentato il Seminario di Vicenza fino alla maturità liceale, nell’ottobre del 1953 il giovane Stefano entra nella casa saveriana di S. Pietro in Vincoli per vivere l’anno di noviziato. Dopo la Prima Professione (18.10.1954) va a Piacenza per gli studi di teologia (1954-1958).
Viene ordinato Presbitero a Piacenza il 22.03.1958.
Finiti gli studi di teologia, p. Stefano lavora a Brescia, dapprima come aiuto economo (1958-1960) e poi come Rettore (1960-1966).
Dopo un anno di studio della lingua inglese a Glasgow (1966-1967), parte per la Sierra Leone. Qui viene mandato a Kambia dove lavora come vice parroco (1967-1968), parroco (1968-1971), economo locale (1967-1971). Dopo qualche mese di studio della lingua Temne a Makeni, p. Stefano svolge vari servizi: amministratore diocesano e procuratore (1972-2974), segretario degli studi (1972-1975).
Dopo un anno di aggiornamento, p. Stefano viene destinato a Londra dove presta il suo servizio come economo locale (1976-1979). In seguito viene destinato alla Regione degli USA, servendo come Vice Rettore a Franklin (1979-1980) e come Rettore a Chicago (1980-1983).
Dopo un anno di studio della lingua spagnola a San Juan del Río (1983-1984) viene destinato alla Colombia dove lavora come vice parroco a Buenaventura (1984-1991).
Nel 1991 p. Stefano viene destinato all’Italia. Dopo un periodo di aggiornamento a Roma, nel Collegio Conforti di Via Aurelia (1992-1994), svolge il ruolo di Visitatore PP.OO.MM. nei seminari (1994-1998), e di Segretario Nazionale delle PP.OO.MM. (1998-2001).
Alcuni collaboratori che lavoravano con lui alle PP.OO.MM. dicevano: “Entusiasmo, semplicità, battuta sempre pronta a smussare ogni spigolosità dell’interlocutore, il volto disposto al sorriso, un cuore aperto alla chiamata dello Spirito per andare ovunque ci fosse bisogno di annunciare il Vangelo e di portare la benedizione di Dio” (Testimonianza di Tommaso Galizia).
Nel 2001 viene destinato alla Colombia dove lavora come animatore missionario e vocazionale a Medellin (2001-2004).
Dopo un anno trascorso a Tavernerio impegnato nel ministero (2004-2005), p. Stefano va a Roma – Casa Generalizia per lavorare come collaboratore della MISNA (2005-2006) e Visitatore PP.OO.MM. nei seminari (2006).
Dopo un periodo a Salerno come animatore missionario (2006-2008), p. Stefano va ad Alzano Lombardo impegnato come Visitatore PP.OO.MM. nei seminari ed animatore missionario (2008-2014).
A causa dei suoi problemi di salute, p. Stefano si trasferisce prima a Parma (2014-2016) e poi a Vicenza. Qui, il 22 maggio 2020, p. Stefano viene portato dagli Angeli in Cielo per partecipare della vita eterna.

Fr. Stefano Berton died in the Hospital of Vicenza, on May 22nd, 2020. He had been hospitalized the day before, due to serious respiratory problems. Born in Santorso (Vicenza – IT) on July 20th, 1934, Fr. Stefano Berton was now 85 years old.
After attending the Diocesan Seminary of Vicenza through High School, young Stefano, in October 1953, entered the Xaverian House of San Pietro in Vincoli for the year of Novitiate. On October 18th, 1954, Stefano Berton celebrated his First religious Missionary Profession. Then, he went to the Xaverian House of the city of Piacenza for his Theological Studies (1954-1958).
Fr. Stefano Berton was ordained Priest in Piacenza, on March 22nd, 1958.
Assigned to minister in the Xaverian House of Brescia, Fr. Stefano Berton served, first, as Assistant Treasurer (1958-1960) and, then as local Rector of the Xaverian Community (1960-1966).
After a year of studying the English language in Glasgow (1966-1967), Fr. Stefano Berton left for Sierra Leone. Here he was sent to the town of Kambia where he ministered as Assistant Parish Priest (1967-1968), Parish Priest (1968-1971) and local Community Treasurer (1967-1971). After few months of studying the local Temne Language in the city of Makeni, Fr. Stefano Berton performed various services: Diocesan Administrator and Procurator (1972-1974), Secretary of Studies (1972-1975).
After a year of updating, Fr. Stefano Berton was assigned to the Xaverian House of London, where he contributed as local Treasurer (1976-1979). Then, he was assigned to work in the Xaverian Region of USA. There, he was named Rector of the Xaverian House of Franklin (Wis.) (1979-1980), and Rector of the Xaverian Theology Community in Chicago (1980-1983).
After a year of studying the Spanish language in San Juan del Río (Mexico) (1983-1984), Fr. Stefano Berton was assigned to minister in Colombia and was named Assistant Parish Priest in the city of Buenaventura (1984-1991).
In the year 1991, Fr. Stefano Berton was recalled to Italy. After a year of updating spent in Rome, in the Conforti College Residence in Via Aurelia, he was named Official Visitor PP.OO.MM. (Pontifical Mission Works) in the Italian Diocesan Seminaries (19944-1998), and National Secretary of the PP.OO.MM. (1998-2001).
Some collaborators working at the PP.OO.MM. wrote: “Enthusiasm, simplicity, always ready to smooth every angularity of the interlocutor, with a smiling face, a heart completely open to the call of the Holy Spirit to go wherever there would be a need to proclaim the Gospel and bring God’s blessing” (Testimony by Thomas Galicia).
In the year 2001, Fr. Stefano Berton was assigned again to Colombia. Now, we find Fr. Stefano missioning in the city of Medellin as Director of Vocations and general ministry to the population (2001-2004).
Again, recalled to Italy, Fr. Stefano Berton was active in ministry in the Xaverian House of Tavernerio (CO – IT) (2004-2005), and in Rome, residing in the House of the Generalate, while being named Collaborator of MISNA (Missionary International Service News Agency) (2005-2006) and Visitor PP.OO.MM. in the Italian Diocesan Seminaries (2006).
After a period in the city of Salerno as Mission Educator (2006-2008), Fr. Stefano Berton was asked to transfer to the Xaverian House of Alzano Lombardo (IT) as PP Visitor PP.OO.MM. in the Italian Diocesan Seminaries and Mission Animator (2008-2014).
Due to health problems, Fr. Stefano Berton moved, first, to the Xaverian Mother House of Parma (2014-2016), and, then, to the Xaverian House of Vicenza. Here, on May 22nd, 2020, Fr. Stefano Berton was brought by the Angels to Heaven to participate in the joy of eternal life.
