P. Marco Ronzani

Nato a Sandrigo (VI) il 12.IX.1908 da Giovanni e Pettenon Maria, a 13 anni entrava nella Scuola Apostolica Saveriana di Vicenza. Ultimato il Noviziato a Parma, emise la Professione religiosa il 29.VIII.1926 nelle mani di Mons. Conforti. Venne ordinato Sacerdote a Parma nella Chiesa di S. Vitale da Mons. Luigi Calza, Vescovo di Cheng-chow (Cina), in Italia per la visita "ad limina" e per il II° Capitolo Generale, il 20.II.1932, assieme ai Confratelli Cattenati, Zotti, Pozzato, Monchelato, Galli, Gitti, Basso, Barsotti, Aliprandi.
A poco meno di 24 anni partiva missionario per la Cina, destinato al Vicariato Apostolico di Loyang (Honan occidentale).
"... Gli fu affidato come primo campo di lavoro il Distretto di Jenche: formò cristiani dalla fede viva e profonda, e questo è il più bel elogio per un Missionario".
All'inizio della guerra cino-giapponese, fu nominato Rettore del Seminario di Loyang; ma la sua opera fu interrotta dalla prigionia. Alla fine della guerra egli è a Pechino, Maestro dei Novizi Saveriani cinesi: ma i comunisti erano alle porte ed i tre sacerdoti cinesi non potevano rimanere...
P. Ronzani si trasferì con essi in Giappone, ove si aprì in quegli anni una nuova Missione Saveriana, nella Diocesi di Osaka: era il dicembre 1949.
L'unica parentesi nel suo lavoro missionario fu il viaggio in Italia nel 1951, quando venne al Capitolo Generale come Delegato dei Saveriani del Giappone. Si fermò in Italia solo alcuni mesi e, benché malandato in salute, volle ritornare in Missione. Forse allora egli domandò troppo al suo fisico, scosso dalle privazioni e dai travagli di questi burrascosi ultimi anni. Morì a Kobe il 13.X.1954.
"... la perdita è stata grave oltre misura - ci scrive il P. Perlini dal Giappone - Generale fu il compianto ed il riconoscimento della sua bontà sacerdotale".
"Pochi anni di vita missionaria in Giappone gli bastarono per accattivarsi la simpatia, il rispetto e l'amore di quanti lo hanno avvicinato sia sacerdoti che fedeli. La bontà di cuore, la semplicità e la comprensione erano le sue caratteristiche..." (da Fede e Civiltà, LII (1954), 247).

Fr. Marco Ronzani died at Kobe (Japan) on Oct. 13 1954 of physical sickness. He was 46 years old, born on Sept. 12 1908 at Sandrigo (Vicenza).
At 13 years old, he entered the Apostolic School of Vicenza, and at the end of Novitiate in Parma, he professed religious vows in the hands of Msgr. Conforti on Aug. 29 1926. After theology studies, Bishop Luigi Calza of Cheng-chow (China) ordains him a priest at the Church of S. Vitale in Parma, together with confreres Cattenati, Zotti, Pozzato, Monchelato, Galli, Gitti, Basso, Barsotti and Aliprandi, on Feb. 20 1932. Msgr. Calza was in Italy at that time for the “ad limina” visit and the Second General Chapter of the Xaverians.
Fr. Marco Ronzani was soon assigned to the mission of China, to work in the Apostolic Vicariate of Loyang (Western Honan). He worked in the district of Jenche, forming Christian communities with a deep faith, receiving much appreciation for the profound service he did.
At the beginning of the Chinese-Japanese war, he was named Rector of the Seminary of Loyang; he was soon put into prison, like all the other Xaverians. At the end of the war, Fr. Ronzani was in Peching, Master of the first three Chinese Novices for the Xaverians: Frs. Simone Liu, Luigi Wang and Augustine Young.
Because of the advent of the Communist revolution, he decided to go to Japan with them, where there was already an opening of the Xaverian presence there, in the diocese of Osaka. Fr. Ronzani reached Japan on Dec. 18 1949.
The only break from his missionary work was an extended trip back to Italy in 1951, when he came to the General Chapter as a delegate of the Xaverians in Japan. Though sick and needing care, he wanted to return to Japan. He probably asked too much of his weaken physic, shaken by the struggles, prison time, and wanderings of his last years of his life. He died on Oct. 13 1954 at Kobe.
“The sudden departure of our beloved Fr. Ronzani is felt beyond measure – writes Fr. Perlini -. His goodness as a priest was mourned by many, with much appreciation for what he did for us.”
“A few years of missionary life in Japan were enough to capture the sympathy, respect and love of many who approached him, both priests and faithful. His human characteristics of gentleness of heart, simplicity, and understanding, touched many indeed…” (“Fede e Civiltà”, 1954, 247).
