Il p. Attilio Stefani nacque a Fontanalucia di Frassinoro (Modena, Italia) il 26 gennaio 1916, da Pietro e Chini Giustina.
22 agosto 1938, Casa del Noviziato Saveriano di S. Pietro in Vincoli: "Al mattino, accompagnati dal Signor Rettore del Seminario di Reggio Emilia, canonico Luigi Galimberti, giungono i postulanti: Orlandini S. ( ... ), Mainini O. ( ... ), Stefani Attilio che proviene da Casalino Ligonchio (RE) ed ha frequentato la seconda Teologia; ha ricevuto la Tonsura, Ostiariato e Lettorato. ( ... )" (Vita Nostra, 1938 lu./ag. P.7). Emessa la professione il 12 settembre 1939, fu ordinato sacerdote a Parma il 29 marzo 1941.
Del 1941 al '46 esercitò il primo ministero sacerdotale al Tempio del Sacro Cuore, Parrocchia di Parma affidata ai Saveriani dell'attigua Casa Madre.
Nel '47 egli è a Glasgow studente di lingua inglese, in attesa di partire per la Sierra Leone. Approfittò della lunga attesa del Visa per approfondire alcuni aspetti teorici e pratici di architettura e di edilizia che gli torneranno in seguito assai utili.
Il 29 giugno 1950 si imbarcava per la Sierra Leone, assieme ai Padri Azzolini A., Calza P., Olivani C. primi saveriani destinati all'Africa. Operò a Lunsar (1951-'52; '87-'93), a Port Loko ('53-'54) e soprattutto nella residenza centrale di Makeni ('55-'87). Dal 1962 al 1987 ricoprì la carica di Vicario Generale della Diocesi.
P. Stefani, arrivato in missione, capì che per fare breccia nel cuore della popolazione bisognava non solo farsi tutto a tutti, amare la gente, specialmente i poveri, ma anche fare delle scelte precise. E la scelte cadde sul campo dell'istruzione e dell'assistenza sanitaria. Conseguentemente, già dal primo anno dopo il suo arrivo, egli iniziò la costruzione di scuole a Lunsar e nei villaggi vicini. Negli anni successivi costruì altre scuole, elementari, medie e superiori, a Makeni ed altrove.
Costruì la Cattedrale di Makeni, vari conventi per le suore, gli ospedali di Makeni e di Lunsar. Per queste sue attività sociali le autorità locali decisero di dedicargli e intitolargli una strade: "Father Stefani Street" ed il 27 apr.'92 il Governo lo insignì del titolo "Commander of the Order of the Rokel", la massima onorificenza della Sierra Leone.
I due segreti del successo e della riuscita in queste opere furono: - le sua capacità di coinvolgere la gente del luogo, formando muratori, carpentieri, falegnami specializzati; - l'aver saputo trovare e suscitare la collaborazione di missionari laici che l'aiutarono nella preparazione dei progetti in Italia e nella loro realizzazione sul luogo.
P. Stefani però non si limitò a fare il costruttore, ma si diede con uguale intensità anche all'apostolato missionario. Se oggi Lunsar conta una bella comunità cristiana, essa è il frutto prezioso del suo lavoro e di quello dei confratelli collaboratori.
Il Signore ha voluto che egli chiudesse proprio a Lunsar il suo apostolato missionario, come un sigillo dato a questo servo buono e fedele. Là lo aveva iniziato e di là egli è partito per il Regno Eterno, stroncato da infarto il 1° aprile 1993. La sua salma è sepolta nel cimitero di Lunsar.
Ricorda una Suora Clarissa Messicane: "P. Stefani è stato per noi un vero padre fin dai primi giorni del nostro arrivo a Lunsar. E ora egli è certamente nella gloria del Signore, perché lo ha sempre servito con amore, fedeltà e generosità".

Fr. Attilio Stefani died at Lunsar (Sierra Leone) on April 1 1993 after his long 43 years of service in the Xaverian Missionary family. He was 76 years old, born at Fontanalucia di Frassinoro (Modena) on July 26 1916.
Fr. Stefani entered the Xaverian novitiate at S. Pietro in Vincoli in 1938 after studies at the diocesan Seminary of Reggio Emilia, where he professed religious vows on Sept. 12 1939. He was ordained priest on March 29 1941, and worked at Sacred Heart Temple in Parma until his destination to Sierra Leone which he reached in 1950, together with Frs. Azzolini, Calza and Olivani. In fact, because of difficulties of visa, he spent 4 years at Glasgow studying English and Architecture which helped him immensely in his future work in Sierra Leone.
After his arrival, Fr. Stefani went to Lunsar where he stayed for about two years (1951-52). He then went to Port Loko (1953-54). In 1955 he was called to Makeni where he remained until 1961, when he was obliged to return to Italy for medical treatment. On his return to Sierra Leone, he was named Vicar General, a position he filled from 1962 to 1987, and was again at Lunsar where he spent all the rest of his life.
Fr. Stefani chose to become everything for everyone, loved by the people, in a particular way by the poor, securing them with education and medical assistance. He built schools (elementary, middle and high schools), hospitals (at Makeni and Lunsar), clinics, convents and churches (Cathedral of Makeni), in the diocese of Makeni, training, in the process, a good number of local bricklayers, carpenters and artists. He was also able to call on professional lay people and lay missionaries to come to Africa and offer their services for particular projects. For all this work, the local authorities dedicated to him "Father Stefani Street" and on April 27 1992 the Government gave him the title "Commander of the Order of the Rokel," the most honorific title of Sierra Leone. And on Feb. 11 1993 he was also granted the “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” medal by Pope John Paul II.
Fr. Stefani however, was not limited to building but devoted himself with equal intensity to the missionary apostolate. Of course, this activity cannot be listed in the same way as the buildings themselves, but if Lunsar has a beautiful Christian community today, it is the precious fruit of his work and that of the confreres who helped him.
Looking at the Christian community of Lunsar, we can say that he took good care of his ministry. “His heaven – wrote Fr. Bob Maloney – perhaps… the Lord’s builder! His silent way was contemplative. A missionary… contemplative in action… his life was full indeed!” A Mexican Clarissian sister remembered: "Fr. Stefani was for us a true father figure since our arrival at Lunsar. And we believe that he is with us in the glory of the Lord, for he served God with love, faithfulness and generosity."
