“FIDUCIA NELLA PROVVIDENZA E… CREATIVITÀ”

La testimonianza e le parole del Fondatore sono fonte particolare di ispirazione per la nostra vita apostolica (Cost. n 1).

Coincidenza o esempio? Casualità a ser ricordata come semplice fatto storico o un modello e una testimonianza da meditare, riflettere e, chissà, seguire?

• Nel Calendario Saveriano 2025, nel giorno 8 aprile leggo: (Conforti) 1927 Istituisce la Pia Opera di S. Francesco Saverio detta “Opera dei partenti”.

• Circa un mese prima (13 marzo 1927) il Fondatore aveva scritto a Mons. Calza (le sottolineature sono mie!):

“In omnibus Christus! Monsignore Carissimo e Veneratissimo,

Sono lieto di poterLe accompagnare colla presente i novelli Missionarii P. Giovanni Tonetto e P. Achille Morazzoni. Posso dare di entrambi ottime referenze. Di carattere mite e buono, di pietà distinta, sono pure animati da grande desiderio di lavorare. Ho tutta la ragione di ritenere che Ella se ne troverà soddisfatta, perché essi sapranno trafficare tutti i talenti ricevuti da Dio. Vorrei consegnar loro un milione per codesta Missione, ma invece appena posso fornir loro le spese di viaggio col corredo indispensabile ad un Missionario. Nello scriverLe questo mi sanguina il cuore e mi sentirei venir meno, se non mi sorreggesse la fiducia grande che sempre conservo nella Divina Provvidenza. Posso proprio dire di sperare contra spem, perché, ad onta di tutto, ritengo che il Signore non ci vorrà abbandonare. Nonostante i demeriti che possiamo avere agli occhi suoi, lavoriamo dopo tutto per la causa sua e per questo almeno tosto o tardi ci esaudirà.

Quando penso a quello che Ella potrà dire per non aver ancora ricevuto alcun soccorso, mi sento venire le fiamme al volto. Del resto io L’assicuro d’aver fatto tutto quanto ho potuto, per mandarLe almeno l’acconto promesso. Ho pregato, ho insistito, ho mandato ripetutamente ad insistere; si sono avute buone promesse, ma di fatto, sino ad ora, nulla. A Parma non è possibile per più ragioni ottenere prestiti. L’unica Banca che ci aveva lasciato sperare è quella di Sant’Antonio di Piacenza; ma temo oramai che anche questa ci fallisca. È in rapporti stretti con questa nostra Banca Centrale Cattolica e presso di questa non spira per noi aria propizia. Non ci daremo per vinti, e non potendo ottenere presso Istituti di Credito quanto domandiamo, ricorreremo a privati e non cesseremo di agitarci finché non avremo sparata sino all’ultima cartuccia. Quando tutti gli uomini sui quali potevamo contare, ci verranno meno, sottentrerà, io penso, il Signore ed egli saprà aiutarci da pari suo. Intanto non cessiamo dal pregare e dal far pregare anime buone per questo. Facciano altrettanto codesti carissimi Confratelli ed anche codesti fervorosi Cristiani. È questa oramai l’unica risorsa che ancor ci rimane.

So delle economie che costì si fanno per condurre innanzi le cose e Dio solo sa quanto questo mi addolora. L’assicuro che a Parma non è possibile ridurre maggiormente le spese occorrenti per il mantenimento della casa. La povertà evangelica viene esercitata in tutta la sua estensione e penso che a Parma non vi sia Istituto Religioso che si contenti di così poco. È una prova che il Signore ci manda e noi dobbiamo superarla il meglio che ci sia possibile.

Entro il venturo Aprile ed il successivo Maggio verranno costì altri quattro Missionarii. Gli altri che sono stati di recente ordinati rimarranno in parte in Italia per i bisogni della Casa Madre e delle altre due filiali. Probabilmente dovrò richiamare qualche soggetto dalla Cina per la Direzione della Casa di Vicenza. Padre Uccelli sta per terminare il suo sessennio e non potrebbe essere confermato per un altro triennio senza l’approvazione della S. Sede ed io non ritengo opportuno chiederla. Ma di questo Le scriverò tra breve, quando avrò preso una determinazione. A Parma tutto procede bene. Regna tra i nostri ottimo spirito e se non difettassero i mezzi materiali, tutto procederebbe a gonfie vele.

 Mi saluti i carissimi Confratelli, mi raccomandi al Signore e mi creda in Corde Jesu”.

Non è inutile ricordare che, terminato il conflitto mondiale (11 novembre 1918), l’Europa vive una profonda crisi economica per i costi della guerra e per la necessità di restituzione dei prestiti di guerra agli Usa; una situazione che determina la svalutazione delle monete europee, inflazione. Le borse crollano e le banche vanno in fallimento fino alla grande crisi del 1929. Gli investitori perdono tutto e in molti non possono restituire i prestiti alle banche che non riescono ad andare avanti sia per gli insoluti sia per le esposizioni delle stesse banche a causa degli investimenti in borsa. Iniziano anni di disoccupazione e povertà, di protezionismo e autarchia. Pare che a Parma non funzionasse più alcuna banca.

Non è il caso di indagare qui sui nomi dei suggeritori, però pare certo che ci fu chi consigliasse la vendita della Casa Madre! Certamente era la soluzione più immediata e facile, anche se non la più geniale né la più coraggiosa e creativa. Creatività, coraggio e audacia invece è continuare a sperare nella Provvidenza e, allo stesso tempo inventare qualcosa di nuovo. Idee nuove, proposte coraggiose, audaci, appunto!

Il Fondatore ne aveva già inventate abbastanza, dalla lotteria nazionale all’obolo di fede e civiltà, dalle fiere di beneficienza alla proposta di sostituire la croce sui monti con una casa di formazione per missionari: monumento a Cristo Redentore. In altre parole: “Gesù Cristo vuole che l'uomo dal canto suo faccia tutto quello che è in suo potere!”.

Mi sembra allora significativo e un esempio a seguire: creare, inventare qualcosa di nuovo, una proposta inedita: OPERA DEI PARTENTI. Quando tutte le banche sono chiuse e anche i benefattori più generosi hanno perso tutti i loro guadagni, ecco la fiducia nella Provvidenza e… la creatività, il coraggio, accettando anche il rischio di… fallire, come San Guido con la lotteria nazionale o la proposta di sostituire le croci sui monti con una casa per diffondere la croce nel mondo.

Vale a pena rileggere:

 …Non ci daremo per vinti, e non potendo ottenere presso Istituti di Credito quanto domandiamo, ricorreremo a privati e non cesseremo di agitarci finché non avremo sparata sino all’ultima cartuccia. Quando tutti gli uomini sui quali potevamo contare, ci verranno meno, sottentrerà, io penso, il Signore ed egli saprà aiutarci da pari suo. TRUST IN PROVIDENCE AND... CREATIVITY

The testimony and the words of the Founder are a unique source of inspiration for our apostolic life. (Const. N. 1)

Coincidence or an example? A random event to be remembered as a mere historical fact, or a model and a testimony to meditate on, reflect upon, and, who knows, perhaps even follow?

• In the 2025 Xaverian Calendar, on April 8, I read: (Conforti) 1927 - establishes the Pia Opera di S. Francesco Saverio, called the "Opera dei partenti."

• About a month earlier (March 13, 1927), the Founder had written to Mons. Calza (emphasis mine!):

"In omnibus Christus!" Most Reverend and Esteemed Monsignor,

 I am pleased to be able to accompany this letter with two new Missionaries, Fr. Giovanni Tonetto and Fr. Achille Morazzoni. I can give excellent references for both of them. Endowed with a kind and good character, distinguished in piety, and driven by a great desire to work. I have every reason to believe you will be pleased with them because they will know how to put all the talents received from God to work. I wish I could give them a million for this Mission, but I can only provide for their travel expenses and the essential equipment for a Missionary. As I write this to you, my heart bleeds, and I would faint if I were not sustained by the great trust I continue to place in Divine Providence. I can genuinely say that I hope against hope because, despite everything, I believe the Lord will not abandon us. Despite the shortcomings we may have in His eyes, we work after all for His cause, and for this reason, sooner or later, He will grant us our requests.

When I think about what you might say about not receiving any assistance, I feel my face burn with shame. Yet, I assure you that I have done everything possible to send you at least the promised advance. I have prayed, insisted, and repeatedly sent others to insist; we have received good promises but nothing until now. In Parma, for various reasons, it is not possible to obtain loans. The only bank that had given us hope was that of Sant'Antonio in Piacenza, but I now fear that even this one will fail us. It has close ties with our Central Catholic Bank, and the climate there is not favorable to us. We will not give up, and if we cannot obtain what we need from Financial Institutions, we will turn to private individuals and will not stop fighting until we have fired our last bullet. When all the people we could count on let us down, the Lord will step in, and He will know how to help us as He sees. In the meantime, let us not cease praying and ask good souls to pray for this. Let our dear confreres and those fervent Christians do the same. Prayer is now the only resource we have left.

I am aware of the sacrifices being made there to keep things going, and God alone knows how much this saddens me. I assure you that cutting costs any further to maintain the house is impossible in Parma. Evangelical poverty is practiced to its full extent, and I don't think there's another Religious Institute in Parma that is content with so little. It is a trial that the Lord sends us, and we must overcome it as best as we can.

By the coming April and May, four more missionaries will arrive there. The others recently ordained will remain in Italy for the needs of the Mother House and the other two houses. I probably have to recall someone from China for the Direction of the House in Vicenza. Father Uccelli is about to complete his six-year term and cannot be reappointed for another three-year term without the approval of the Holy See. Besides, I do not think it is appropriate to request it. But I will write to you about this shortly when I have decided. In Parma, everything is going well. A great spirit reigns among us, and if it were not for the lack of material means, everything would be going splendidly.

 Please greet our dear Confreres for me, commend me to the Lord, and believe me, I remain in Corde Jesu."

It is not unnecessary to remember that after the war ended (November 11, 1918), Europe experienced a deep economic crisis due to the costs of the war and the need to repay war loans to the USA. This situation caused a devaluation of European currencies, inflation. Stock markets crashed, and banks failed, culminating in the Great Depression of 1929. Investors lost everything, and many could not repay the loans to the banks - which collapsed due to defaults and their own stock market losses. Unemployment and poverty followed, along with rising protectionism and economic isolationism. It seems that in Parma, no bank was functioning.

It's not worth investigating who suggested it, but someone undoubtedly advised selling the Mother House. For sure, it is the easiest solution, although not the most brilliant or the most courageous and creative. Creativity, courage, and audacity, on the other hand, mean continuing to trust in Providence and, at the same time, trying something new. New ideas, courageous proposals, bold ones, indeed!

The Founder had already come up with a few -  from the national lottery to faith and civilization offerings, from charity fairs to the proposal of replacing the cross on the mountains with a missionary formation center: a monument to Christ the Redeemer. In other words: "Jesus Christ wants the person to do everything in his power!"

So it seems significant to me—and an example worth following is creating, inventing something new, a fresh proposal: OPERA DEI PARTENTI. What remains when all the banks are closed, and even the most generous benefactors have lost all their earnings? Trust in Providence and... creativity, courage, even accepting the risk of... failure - just like Saint Guido with the national lottery or the thought of replacing the crosses on the mountains with a house to spread the cross around the world.

It's worth reading again:

…we will not give up. If we can't obtain what we need from Financial Institutions, we will turn to private individuals and will not stop fighting until we have fired our last bullet. When all the people we counted on fail us, I believe the Lord will step in, and He will know how to help us as He sees fit. In the meantime, let us not cease to pray and ask good souls to pray for this intention. Let our dear confreres and those fervent Christians do the same. Prayer is now the only resource we have left…
