XVII Capitolo Generale SX
Tavernerio (CO), 19 agosto 2017
Comunicato 16

Sabato 19 agosto.

XVII General Chapter SX
Tavernerio (CO), 19 August 2017
Communication 16

Saturday 19 August. The day began with the recitation of the Morning Prayer. Then, at 9 am in the assembly, the secretary offered the Order of the Day for this last day of the XVII General Chapter.

Evaluation of the Chapter

The chapter assembly devoted about 90 minutes to the overall assessment and the various aspects of the Chapter: preparation, hospitality, prayer, group work and commission work, etc. Among the hopes; better preparation, an introduction to the style of work and chapter language for those who are new, greater mutual understanding ... Someone expressed the desire to keep contacts between the chapter delegates, even with exchanges, comments and new contributions.

Conversation of the Superior General

By 10.40, the newly elected Superior General, Fr. Fernando Garcìa  Rodrìguez, held his "first conversation," as described below, in a revised version. He read  numbers 1 and 10 of the Letter of Testament. "These words of our holy founder help us to live our vocation more and more deeply."

Conclusion of the XVIIth Chapter

Then the Superior General asked for the "placet" of the capitulars to declare this chapter concluded: "Do you agree that this XVII General Chapter is concluded?" With the hands raised, the capitulars gave their assent. The Superior General then continued: "With the favorable opinion of the chapter leaders, I conclude the XVII General Chapter of the Pious Society of St. Francis Xavier for the Foreign Missions."

Concluding Mass

At 11:15 the chapters gathered in a chapel to celebrate the Eucharist, presided by the Superior General and his Counselors, with the readings of the day and the Mass prayers in honor of St. Guido M. Conforti. The short homily is shown below, in the revised version of Fr. Fernando.

At the beginning of the Mass we were given a sheet with the "Prayer on Offering", which we recited together at the offertory time: "By presenting bread and wine, oh Father, at the end of this general chapter, help us live in the spirit of the documents Approved, and renew our spirit of living, of mutual charity, and of ready and generous obedience to our religious family and to those whom we have entrusted to the service of authority. We ask you this through Christ our Lord. Amen".

At the end of the Mass, Fr. General provided each participant with a copy of the Testament Letter of our founder in exchange for the gift that each delegation presented during the celebration of the Mass that they lead during the days of the Chapter.

Meeting with the Bishop of Como

Bishop Oscar Cantoni, bishop of Como, came to meet the Xaverians gathered for the chapter on the evening of Saturday, August 19th. The Rector Fr. Luigi, on behalf of all those present, welcomed and presented the new Superior General and his four Councilors. The conversation happened as you can read in the revision version of Fr. Fernando. We prayed vespers together in the chapel St. Anne and we had dinner with the bishop, whom we thanked for his pastoral care and support for us.

Intanto, p. Mario, p. Eugenio e p. Javier saranno a Roma, e restiamo in dialogo.

Gesù e i bambini.

Fr. Fernando Garcia’s first conversation with the Capitulars
August 19th at 11:00am
(Reviewed by the author, August 22nd)

Some words, from the heart.

First of all, it is necessary to thank God, who is at the origin of who we are: He gave us life, the Spirit, everything, and gave us the gifts necessary to do all the work in this chapter. With Mary, in her Magnificat, I want to say, "Great is the Lord, and I want to praise him; God is my Savior; I am full of joy. " We have to make this song our own.

The second word of thanks goes to our founder, Saint Guido M. Conforti. He founded this family. We are invited to imitate his style, with the five components that must distinguish us, and to imitate our martyrs, as witnesses of the life given.

A word of thanks to the members of the previous General Direction, led by Fr. Luigi Menegazzo - until his death; Now he is accompanying us from heaven - for the work he has done during these four years: Fr. Mario, Fr. Eugenio, Fr. Javier and Fr. Antonio, for the work they continue to offer our Family.

Thank you to each and every one of you: with your personal contribution and together, becoming each a spokesman for many other brothers, representing our whole family. Everything that happened during this chapter helps and contributes to the common good. Thanks in particular to the members of the steering committee, the secretary and the actuaries in their various services, and to the community of Tavernerio for the welcome they offered.

Two special thoughts

I want to remember a particular way two categories of people in our Family. The elderly and the ill, anywhere in the world. Their testimony is very beautiful. They accompanied us with prayer. Their example and testimony are very important to us.

Young people who are with us in formation homes all over the world: in Asia, Latin America, Africa and Europe; Even the districts that are opening up to the formation: Brazil, which with great insistence, has defended the possibility of having its own novitiate; Bangladesh, with a still open window; Mozambique is also ready for vocations. They show the commitment and desire to live and propose the Xaverian charism. We look forward to the future with hope, we bring all these young people into our hearts and in prayer with love and affection.

Along with these two first categories, we also remember all the confreres scattered in so many nations of the world engaged in missionary service of evangelization.

"In our hands ..."

The work of the XVII General Chapter is in our hands. It is the result of discernment, reflection, and prayer. Its success will depend largely on our commitment. Our work does not end there. We were sent to the chapter; Now let's go back to our regions to help the brothers understand and welcome the documents and the spirit of the chapter. In six years we will make an evaluation. But from now on we have to bring it into our hands as a treasure.

The Spirit of the Family

Conforti insisted on the "spirit of the Family". I invite all to nourish the sense of the Family, the sense of belonging, as the founder wanted, at the level of the regions and at the general level.” I'm in Japan, I'm in Mexico, I stay there” ... No, we are missionaries in a particular context, but we are open to the whole world. We cannot close in on our community, on our region.

When one is ordained a priest, it is said that he is not ordained solely for his diocese, but for the whole church. We must therefore also have a broad sense of Family: we are on a mission in a certain place, but we remain open to go and go elsewhere to serve in the Family.

Internationalization and interculturality, ever present, are  great gifts from the Lord to our Family. We ask for wisdom to know how to live and cultivate this gift as a richness.

Collegiality of government

Regarding the governance, Pope Francis teaches us, first of all, collegiality, the involvement of everyone. We nourish this mentality and make it concrete with collegial gestures: everyone feels involved in the governance of the Family. The General Council will do all it can to move in this way. That is why I ask for your help, as did Pope Francis at the beginning of his pontificate, when he was kneeling to ask for the blessing of the faithful. One does not govern from above.

On behalf of the Council, help us do the work you have entrusted to us in this chapter. If you see things that are not going well, tell us; Have the courage to say it in fraternity and openness (rather than talking behind our backs), also using the available communication tools. Even in our visits, it will be an occasion for us to speak and listen. We are poor and limited, and we need to be helped.

The General Council will meet in Rome in early October to do its programing. Meanwhile, Father Fabien will go to the Philippines and myself to Cameroon to prepare for the regional chapter. Meanwhile, Fr. Mario, Fr. Eugenio and Fr. Javier will be in Rome, and we will remain in dialogue.

From the Letter of Testament

I end up with two quotations from the Testament Letter of the Founder.

In Paragraph 1. On the occasion of the adoption of the Constitutions of 1921: "We have reason to celebrate and give thanks to the Lord on this Occasion.  This approval attests to the holiness and timeliness of the Society to which we have given our name.  As a result of this recognition, we assume significant and solemn obligations before God and the Church. The importance of this event is not to pass unobserved.  Hence we should strive to attain the lofty goals proposed by our Society by working more zealously to make the gospel known among non-believers. In this way we may contribute something toward the realization of Christ’s prophetic vision, the creation of a single Christian family which embraces all peoples.  Furthermore, we ought to be firmly convinced that the vocation we received could not have been greater or more exalted. It calls us to be close to Christ, the source and purpose of our faith, and to the apostles, whom we regard as preeminent teachers and who unconditionally left all to follow Him completely.  Indeed, the Lord could not have been more generous with us!”.

In n. 10, the wish of Conforti: "In bringing these reflections to a close, allow me to summarize what I have expressed above as a desire. It is my wish that the distinguishing characteristic of present and future members of the Society be the resultant of certain co-efficients.  The first is that spirit of living faith which enables us to see God, seek God, love God in all and sharpens our eagerness to propagate his kingdom everywhere.  Then there is that spirit of ready, selfless, constant obedience – in everything without counting the costs – which carries off the victories which the Lord promised to those who are obedient.  Finally, there is that spirit of intense love for our religious family, which is like a mother to us, and of complete respect for the members who constitute it.  This is my wish, accept it as a father’s final desire.  I entrust this request to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with the prayer that His grace may enable it to be realized.  Even though we are workers of the last hour and we offer only what we can to help bring this about, nonetheless we are able to make our own meager contribution to build up the mystical body of Christ, and we will receive the reward similar to that granted to the workers of the rest hour."

These words of our holy founder help us live our vocation more and more deeply.

Concluding Mass of the Chapter

August 19th at 11:15

We celebrated the Mass of St. Guido Conforti with the readings from the day Joshua 24, the choice to serve the Lord, and Matthew 19, 13.  Jesus and the little children.

Fr. Fernando’s words

I want to share with you two thoughts on today's biblical readings (Joshua 24: 14-29; Matthew 19: 13-5).

Joshua publicly chooses God for himself and for his family: "I and my family belong to God". At the same time, he challenges the people: "You cannot, because you serve other gods." The people answered him, "Yes, we can; we would rather die than abandon the Lord." And to give strength to these words, he reminds them of all the benefits received by the Lord.

In our lives we must always remember the good that the Lord has done to us: we are what we are, thanks to the God who accompanies us. Every time we look to the past, we are invited to orient ourselves to the future: let us go where he expects us, to participate in his dream. At the same time, we live in a contradiction: we are aware of forces that contradict God's love and can take God's place ... We must take into account this fragile humanity, be aware of the tendencies we have in order to let us evangelize and save. We just open ourselves to God, and he will take advantage of this small opening to get in and pull us up.

Jesus and the children. Be small as a lifestyle: small in front of God, great as God sees us. A similar lifestyle also in our relationships, to feel us brothers between us and with everyone. It was difficult to recognize Jesus as God, precisely because he was immersed among the little and the poor. We must have this feature: being and living close to the small and the poor, those who count little in the eyes of the world, beating back the temptation to look for the rich, the powerful for our well-being.

Yesterday, on WhatsUp, I received this message: "Many small people, in small places, doing little things for the good of all: these people are great!"

Offertory Prayers

At the beginning of the Mass we were given a sheet with the "Prayer on Offering", which we recited together at the offertory time: "By presenting bread and wine, oh Father, at the end of this general chapter, help us live in the spirit of the documents Approved, and renew our spirit of living, of mutual charity, and of ready and generous obedience to our religious family and to those whom we have entrusted to the service of authority. We ask you this through Christ our Lord. Amen".

Fr. Mario Mula at the end of Mass

Every day, during the celebration of the Mass, the delegates of each region offered a gift, the work of their people.  Thank you.  As a way to respond to this, the General Direction as well has prepared for each of you a copy of the hand written and signed Testament Letter of our founder. We give you this as our gift to you.
