PRIMO INCONTRO INTERCONTINENTALE
DEI RAPPRESENTANTI DEI CENTRI DI STUDIO SAVERIANI
Nei giorni 17 e 18 agosto 2015 si è tenuto nella Casa Generalizia di Roma il 1° incontro intercontinentale dei Centri di Studio Saveriani: Centro Studi Asiatico (CSA); Centro Studi Latino-americano (CEMLA); Centro Studi Africano (CEA).
Rappresentavano i Centri: Tosolini T., Lopez Rafael, Coletto A. I membri permanenti del CSA hanno partecipato, prima di cominciare il loro incontro annuale di lavoro. La Direzione Generale è stata presente al completo. Il Padre Generale, salutando i convenuti faceva notare che il luogo dove la riunione si tiene è simbolico: il ‘centro’ della Congregazione, segno dell’importanza che la Famiglia accorda a questi Centri e al loro contributo.
A seguire pubblichiamo le relazioni (vedi .pdf) che sono state presentate durante l’incontro, a partire da quella del P. Generale (in italiano e inglese). Egli ha sottolineato la “funzione unificatrice” dei Centri: da essi deve nascere una mentalità nuova e comune di confronto, ricerca, apertura, contro la privatizzazione della missione. I Centri Studio devono diventare motori di ricerca per tutti, non come puro esercizio accademico, ma mantenendo solido il contatto con la realtà. Una prospettiva irrinunciabile all’efficacia di ogni sorta di dialogo: l’incarnazione, unico atteggiamento che ci permetta di annunciare con passione e competenza.
Alcune reazioni e commenti dei presenti
Non si può più lavorare senza capire la realtà culturale circostante. Indispensabile far emergere il vissuto della nostra missione, per valorizzarlo e metterlo al servizio degli altri. Diversi confratelli non sono interessati a questo cammino della Famiglia, ma è necessario insistere e coinvolgere sempre di più perché la ricerca, il confronto, non sono delle attività, ma un modo di essere altamente missionario, utile per chi lo pratica e per le comunità che imparano a confrontarsi e dialogare.
Non c’è possibilità di dialogo autentico senza prima riconciliarsi con la propria estraneità, itineranza, ignoranza, dipendenza, incompletezza in rapporto all’ambiente in cui lavoriamo come ospiti e in rapporto alla complessità del mondo contemporaneo.
Abbiamo tante competenze in Congregazione, ma restano ancora poco valorizzate per un servizio comune. E’ importante che gli interessi personali siano messi al servizio del progetto comune.
L’atteggiamento del conoscere-confronto-dialogo è da imparare fin dalla formazione di base per essere poi sviluppato e concretizzato sempre meglio successivamente. A questo proposito i Centri Studio possono dare un grande apporto.
Le relazioni dei centri
Sono seguite le relazioni dei tre Centri: situazione attuale, lavoro svolto, prospettive, persone coinvolte. Si nota il grande sforzo messo in atto attraverso riunioni di coordinamento e programmazione, pubblicazioni, apporti diversi per la formazione permanente. Resta da vedere come mettere in rete il materiale esistente nei Centri di documentazione del Giappone e del Camerun che è già quasi completamente informatizzato. Il sito della DG contiene già interamente la produzione del CSA e del CEMLA. Sta per inserire anche quanto è stato prodotto in Africa.
Approfondimenti e conclusioni
Un terzo momento dell’incontro parte dalle richieste dell’ultimo Capitolo Generale quanto all’importanza del dialogo interculturale inteso in senso largo, per cercare di individuare l’apporto che potrebbero fornire i Centri Studio. La DG era stata richiesta di incoraggiare e di coordinare. In questo senso, già la presente riunione è una risposta. La DG giocherà poi un ruolo più diretto e determinante nella strutturazione dei Centri: concretamente, nominerà i “membri permanenti” dei Centri.
Sarebbe augurabile che anche i Paesi del Nord abbiano un coordinamento delle loro ricerche e dei loro contributi. Il Pontificio Consiglio per la nuova Evangelizzazione può essere un punto di riferimento quanto ai temi da affrontare.
Ogni Circoscrizione dovrebbe incaricare di preferenza uno dei Consiglieri per l’animazione culturale e dovrebbe profittare delle riunioni varie per sensibilizzare e coinvolgere tutti alla riflessione e alla ricerca. Il CSA ha riflettuto e pubblicato una “job description” di questo ruolo già dall’Agosto 2010.
I vari fogli di collegamento interni alle Circoscrizioni potrebbero anche prevedere una rubrica “Formazione Permanente” con indicazioni di corsi, iniziative, sussidi.
Si decide di coordinare un lavoro di ricerca in vista del Convegno che è tradizione convocare prima di ogni Capitolo Generale. La DG sceglierà il tema e lo comunicherà ai Centri; questi si accorderanno sul lavoro da fare per metterlo a disposizione del Convegno come loro contributo.

Introduction
The first intercontinental meeting of the Xaverian Study Centers was held in the Generalate House, in Rome, on 17-18 August 2015. The following Centers were represented: the Asian Studies Center (CSA), by Tiziano Tosolini; the Latin American Studies Center (CEMLA), by Rafael López and the African Studies Center by Armando Colletto.
The permanent members of the CSA took part before beginning their annual work meeting. The entire General Direction was also present and, in welcoming the participants, the Superior General pointed out the symbolic meaning of the place where they had gathered: the ‘center’ of the Congregation, which is a sign of the importance given by our Family to these centers and their contribution.
We are publishing here the reports (see .pdf) that were presented during the meeting, beginning with the report of the Superior General (in Italian and English). He emphasized the “unifying function” of the Centers: they must give birth to a new and shared mentality of comparison, research and openness in order to oppose the privatization of the mission. The Study Centers must become research instruments for all, not as a mere academic exercise, but to maintain a firm contact with reality. An essential perspective for the efficacy of any kind of dialogue is incarnation, which is the only attitude that allows us to proclaim with enthusiasm and competence.
some reactions and comments of the participants
We can no longer work without understanding the surrounding cultural reality. We must allow the living experience of our mission to emerge so that we can properly value it and make it available to others. Various confreres are not interested in this journey of our Family, but it is necessary to insist and get involved more and more so that the research and comparison are not just activities, but a way of being true missionaries, useful for those who practice it and for the communities that learn to compare and dialogue.
There is no possibility of authentic dialogue without first being reconciled with the fact that we are foreigners, itinerants, ignorant, dependent and incomplete in relation to the context in which we work as guests and in relation to the complexity of the contemporary world.
We have so many competences in the Congregation, but they are still not sufficiently valued as resources for a common service. It is important that personal interests are placed at the service of the common project.
The attitude of knowing-comparison-dialogue must be learned from initial formation onwards and constantly developed and improved thereafter. The Study Centers can make a great contribution in this field.
the reports of the centers
The reports of the three Centers focused on the current situation, the work carried out, prospects and the persons involved. A great effort has been put into meetings for coordination and planning, publications and various contributions to ongoing formation. It remains to be seen how the existing material in the documentation centers of Japan and Cameroon, which has already been almost completely digitalized, can be uploaded on the web. The General Direction’s website already contains the entire production of the CSA and CEMLA and the material from Africa will be uploaded soon.
deepening and conclusions
A third part of the meeting dealt with the request of the last General Chapter regarding the importance of intercultural dialogue in its widest sense, in order to try and identify the contribution that could be made by the Study centers. The General Direction had been asked to encourage and coordinate. In this sense, the present meeting is already a response. The General Direction will play a more direct and decisive role in the structuring of the Centers: more specifically, it will appoint the “permanent members” of the centers.
It would be good if the countries of the North coordinated their research and contributions. The Pontifical Council for the new evangelization can be a point of reference for the topics that need to be dealt with.
Every Circumscription should appoint someone, preferably a Councilor, to take charge of the cultural animation and they should take advantage of the various meetings for sensitizing and involving all the confreres in the reflection and research. The CSA published a “job description” of these roles in August 2010.
The various internal bulletins of the Circumscriptions could also host a section on “Ongoing Formation” with information on courses, initiatives and resources.
It was decided to begin research in view of the Meeting that is traditionally held before every General Chapter. The General Direction will choose the topic and inform the Centers; these will then agree among themselves on the work to be done and make it available to the Meeting as their contribution.
