Breve presentazione biografica di P. Luigi Menegazzo

P. Luigi era nato a Cittadella (PD) il 16 luglio del 1952.
Ancora molto giovane, alla fine della scuola elementare, nel 1963, entra nell’Istituto dei Missionari Saveriani a Vicenza, dove inizia il cammino che lo porterà a sviluppare la sua vocazione missionaria. Nella sua domanda per fare la promessa apostolica, alla fine del ginnasio, a Zelarino, esprime il motivo principale che lo guida nel cammino vocazionale: “Mi sento tranquillo nel fare la promessa apostolica poiché non ho altro desiderio se non di seguire Gesù con la vocazione che Egli mi ha dato. Non faccio quindi la Promessa per spinta del sentimento, ma per convinzione personale. Ho posto tutta la mia fiducia nel Signore e faccio questo passo con tutta serenità, sicuro di non essermi imbrogliato, di non aver imbrogliato i superiori, di non cercare di imbrogliare il Signore”. Era il 24 marzo 1968 e non aveva ancora compiuto 16 anni. Sarà questo spirito di fede, di sincerità e onestà che lo guiderà durante il cammino della sua vita. E sará questa la base sulla quale costruirá la sua competenza missionaria.
Dopo il liceo classico a Tavernerio, la Propedeutica e la Teologia a Parma, nel 1976 può finalmente coronare il suo sogno di appartenere alla Famiglia saveriana, impegnandosi per sempre, come dice nella sua domanda di ammissione alla Professione Perpetua, “ad accettare l’istituto così com’è, con le sue Costituzioni, e a usare dei mezzi che lui stesso mi offre – e non altri – per essere al suo interno un membro attivo, costruttivo, efficace, disponibile”. Parole queste che l’hanno guidato per tutta la sua vita saveriana, dandone testimonianza nel suo servizio missionario e nella vita comunitaria. Inoltre, durante tutto il tempo trascorso nella Direzione Generale, sono stati questi stessi i punti fermi per l’aiuto, l’incoraggiamento, la guida e il consiglio per i confratelli.
Ordinato sacerdote nel 1977, continua gli studi a Roma presso l’Università Gregoriana dove ottiene la Licenza in Missiologia nel 1980. L’anno successivo parte per il Giappone, sua terra di missione dove, dopo aver studiato la lingua, svolge il suo servizio prima come vice parroco e poi come parroco nella parrocchia di Nichinan. Richiamato in Italia nel 1989 per un servizio come insegnante nella Teologia di Parma, nel 1994 ritorna in Giappone dove svolge vari incarichi, prima come parroco a Tamana (1994-1998), come Vice Superiore Regionale e poi come Superiore Regionale dal 1998 al 2001. In Giappone, dove P.Luigi ha speso 16 anni, fedeltá, passione e creativitá sono state le caratteristiche della sua attivitá missionaria, culturalmente molto vivace e sempre sostenuta da una solida esperienza spirituale.
Nel Capitolo Generale del 2001 viene eletto Vicario Generale, un servizio che continuerà anche nel sessennio successivo fino al 2013, quando viene eletto Superiore Generale. Come Padre Generale, il suo mandato alla guida della Congregazione sarebbe dovuto terminare nel 2019, ma Dio ha disposto diversamente, evidentemente giudicando maturi i frutti del suo apostolato. Nelle prime ore di domenica 18 dicembre, P. Luigi il Signore lo ha chiamato a sé. Il desiderio che fin da giovane aveva espresso di non voler altro che seguire Gesù con la vocazione che Lui gli aveva dato, ha trovato ora il suo compimento.
Sebbene nel cuore di tutti noi ci sia un grande dolore per la separazione inaspettata di questo fratello, confratello, amico e Superiore, rimane la certezza che adesso P. Luigi potrà aiutare questa nostra Famiglia Saveriana – la sua Famiglia – che tanto ha amato e servito su questa terra, attraverso la sua intercessione presso Dio, con la Vergine Maria e San Guido Conforti.
Brief biographical profile of Fr. Luigi Menegazzo

Fr. Luigi was born in Cittadella (Padua) on 16 July 1952.
In 1963, at the end of primary school and while still a very young boy, he joined the Xaverian Missionaries in Vicenza, where he began the journey that would lead him to develop his missionary vocation. In his application to make the apostolic promise, at the end of junior high school in Zelarino, he expressed the principal motive that guided him in his vocation journey: “I make the apostolic promise serenely because I desire nothing more than to follow Jesus in the vocation that he has given me. I am therefore not motivated by sentiment, but by personal conviction. I have placed all my trust in the Lord and I take this step with total serenity, certain that I am not deceiving myself, the superiors, or the Lord”. It was 24 March 1968 and he was not yet 16 years old. This spirit of faith, sincerity and honesty guided him throughout his life journey and it became the foundation upon which he built his missionary competence.
After completing secondary school studies focusing on humanities in Tavernerio, the Introductory Year and Theology in Parma, in 1976 he was finally able to crown his dream to belong to the Xaverian Family through a life-long commitment, as he said in his application for admission to Final Profession, “to accept the Institute as it is, with its Constitutions, and to use the means it offers me – and no others– to live within it an active, constructive, efficacious and available member”. These words these guided him for his entire Xaverian life and he bore witness to them in his missionary service and community life. Moreover, during the entire time spent in the General Direction, they were the same firm points of reference in the help, encouragement, guidance and advice he gave to the confreres.
He was ordained priest in 1977 and continued his studies in Rome at the Gregorian University, where he obtained a Masters in Missiology in 1980. The following year he left for Japan, his mission country, where, after studying the language, he served first as assistant priest and then as parish priest in the parish of Nichinan. He was called back to Italy in 1989 where he worked as a teacher in the Theology community of Parma; he returned to Japan in 1994, where where he carried out various tasks, first as parish priest in Tamana (1994-1998), Vice-Regional Superior and Regional Superior from 1998 until 2001. In Japan, where Fr. Luigi spent 16 years, fidelity, enthusiasm and creativity were the characteristics of his missionary activity, which was culturally very vivacious and always sustained by a solid spiritual experience.
In the General Chapter of 2001 he was elected Vicar General, a task that he continued to carry out in the successive six-year term until 2013, when he was elected Superior General. As Superior General, his mandate to guide the Congregation should have lasted until 2019, but God had other plans, obviously judging the fruits of his apostolate to be mature. In the early hours of Sunday, 18 December, the Lord called Fr. Luigi to Himself. The desire he had expressed from his youth, to do nothing else but follow Jesus in the vocation he had given him, has now found its fulfillment.
Although there is a great sorrow in all our hearts at the unexpected separation from this brother, confrere, friend and Superior, we have the certainty Fr. Luigi will now be able to help our Xaverian Family – his Family – which he loved so much and served upon this earth, through his intercession with God, with the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Guido Conforti.
